This is a great little technique I learned from Ken Cardwell of Knivesandlanyards.com when I asked for suggestions on creating a 4-strand round braid loop for a lanyard without ending up with 8 strands. He shared his approach with me on the Usual Suspects Network forum, and it became a key component of my SkogKniv lanyard design. Please also visit SkogKniv's youtube channel and see a video he did upon receipt of the custom lanyard • Video . Another great application of this loop would be in making the wrist loop on a dog leash!

First of your videos I have watched, just beginning my journey into tying paracord, enjoyed this quite a bit.
On your comment about blocked rude people - one of the issues we have in society today is people believing they have to tolerate rude and crude behavior. We don't. I applaud your actions.

Anyone who is bothered by the sound of typing in the background of your videos is just getting too frustrated and should take a break. If that doesn't help them relax a little then maybe they should find something that requires less patience. Those bothered by the sound of the children who often surround you really need to learn the more important of the two things that you impart when the kids are around. The lesser of your practices
being the braiding and the much greater lesson being taking care of, and teaching children how to have fun while learning and working. Your interaction with the kids is entertaining so carry on as you have been and thank you for it all.

I know this video is 8 years old, but I'll add this comment for new viewers:
If you count things as you braid, this technique is basically Under 2 - Back-Over 1. I abbreviate this U2 - B-O1.
He is showing the "straight" pattern. If you want the "twist" look, then just alternate the colors on the first step - Dark-Light-Dark-Light.
He starts with Dark-Dark-Light-Light which gives his pattern a "straight" look.
Overall the technique is the same (U2 - B-O1)
Take care everyone and have a blessed day.

This has got to be one of the worst tutorials I've watched. Had to slow down the video to .25 speed, but still could not understand what is going on. No auditory explanation. I don't care if there is a secretary typing, what I care about is the steps being explained. I could work with "Put left most string over whatever, put rightmost string over what ever." Nothing. And the fingers. Blocking the strands that I could not see anything. Sheesh.

good video.as to the sound part that you talked about it should not be a chouse between the kids and other sounds evin other brade videos iv seen where sometimes outside and still have less sound in there videos.if you wanna make a pro video get a sound proof room and if you want music use music from say your phone or cd player or if your really good at video editing just cut the unwanted sounds out after but for what it is its ok.

Don't let the turkeys grind you down, or take the fun out of what you are doing. In Latin there is a quote: BASTARDES CARBORUNDUM NON! Anyone can write criticism, and there are far too many who do not know how to behave in public. Almost none are making videos or doing anything constructive themselves. Don't give a moments thought to them and we wll thank you for weeding them out!

Apparently you've led a sheltered life. Given the opportunity, there is an immature jerk to fill every niche. Oh, wait--I see. You got it. But the jerks are almost all nonproductive, and lack anything they can point to to show us how to do it better! Never forget that. Take away their anonymity, and they become invisible and silent.

I wanted to thank the Paracordist for these great videos. I've been a knot-head all my life but this is stepping it up a notch! I'm learning a lot and having fun.
After seeing this video I tried different variations of the same idea, splicing the four strand round braid back into itself...either for a loop, or as asked, for a complete circle (necklace). I am finding that when I do it right, it turns into doubled four strand round braid (four pairs of two)
I end up having a loop of four strand round braid with a lead of doubled four strand round braid...that eventually peters out to only four strands again....I can run them all through a ring and weave them back in again, making it doubled four strand all the way back to where it all started....hope that makes sense.

    Hi Kevin,
I was hoping you could help me. I already made my 4-strand braid leash to the length I want it but after coming to the end where I wanted to finish my loop I realized using the 4-strand braid for the loop would be a bit rough on my girlfriend's hands when walking the dog so I wanted to transition the loop into a different style braid...something with a round shape like a "sawtooth or corkescrew" but I just can't figure out how to transition the 4 strands for something like that. Any chance you might be able to make a short video making a transition? I would greatly appreciate it!!!

  • @bushcraftoregon

Good vid Kevin. thankyou for mentioning me. One thing I might suggest on your needle nose pliers is to file off the ridges so it is smooth. Less chance to catch on the paracord and snag it. I use mine all the time since like you showed you want the braiding to be consistent and using the pliers to snug things up works great.

Cool idea! You would need alot of cord, most knots are 1ft of paracord = 1 in of knot...as for the next question there are many ways of doing so and there a a couple examples on youtube just search paracord keychain clip, its basically the same concept

I'm trying to tie a 4 strand round braid rope for my work bucket using these loops at each end. The first one would be easy of course but how would I make the other end once the rope is passed through the opposite hole in my bucket?

Hello. Thank you for the video, I am learning a lot. I was wondering if you have the same method for an 8-strand braid. I am totally new to this and need to learn how to make a secure eye at both ends. I guess this is two different questions, but please let me know if you have any guidance on this. Thanks.

I know if I were to make a video, I surely would not allow my wife or any kids interrupt the sound integrity to further enhance the quality of this video series, But I too enjoy your videos!

thanks kevin for your aweslme videos. love the kids btw. i came up with a fancy way of dealing with 8 strands for making a dog leash if i can figure out how to send you photos on this thing i will. basiclly you make a length of braid in the middle of your cord as long as you want the loop to be. join them with lanyard knot doubled with the foir you have left (2 on each side,) you cobra stitch back over the loop meeting in the middle and then hiding ends in cobra braid.
