The ranking is naturally quite skewed in favor of sequels, but I would say it is fine overall. On MAL you can also have a ranking by popularity, i.e. by the number of people who watch the show, you will get a very different ranking, so maybe that's what you had in mind.
Many people are asking about Steins;Gate. It actually is ranked highly on many Japanese anime sites too. But it was also a "late night" anime that was originally broadcast at 1:30 am. For comparison, Gintama used to be on during early evening hours when more people might be able to watch. Same with Fullmetal Alchemist (Hagaren). Attack on Titan and Code Geass were first aired at late night but eventually were re-broadcast during earlier hours on some channels. It's probably due to the small sample and the fact that many people don't stay up too late that more people haven't heard of it.

@@weeb69 idk man. Both the irregular and Sao is really popular in Japan. I guess the weebs there like their anime to have an overpowered mc with a fast pace story
majority of japanese people doesn't like anime about western culture, that's why only jojo part 3 and part 4 are popular in japan and the other part is more popular overseas.
I understand cowboy bebop not popular because it's very western in it's story telling(the same reason why demon slayer is overhyped in Japan while it really is just kinda meh). As someone who hasn't watched stein gate, the show doesnt look very appealing and it's not that popular.
MAL has a pretty huge user count, although what's in top anime doesn't necessarily the popular. Iirc SAO is up there, but the score was only around 7. And i love how one of them noticed the list missing some of the popular classic like One Piece. Because One Piece is definitely popular, it's just not rated too highly 🤔😅
Popular doesn’t mean well loved. It doesn’t always mean people have positive opinions towards a thing. It just means it’s well known. Everyone at least knows of it. Even then, there’s plenty of people that love SAO. That’s why it’s popular because people have probably seen it and have opinions on it whether they be positive or negative.
eh One piece is both popular and highly rated in japan . and well loved in Japan . Thing with MAL is a western anime fan forum and it biased to a kinda elite opinon of that subset of fans in America . Or just Americans like no one in the video mention bebop since bebop was never popular in japan . Like no one ever heard of Stein gate but it's number 2 on the list .
even it was a top 20 popularity, the big 3 and db are rather low on the list considering their title. Moslty due cuz they are very popular, but many people didnt watched them cuz they are too long (my case too lmao), so they dont put it in their list
@@dorianpompa8409 that’s a terrible analogy, bleach isn’t very popular in japan it’s like an Older anime That is pretty well known It was big during its prime while running but not much people acknowledge it, naruto is pretty popular in japan but it’s not like a top 5 in popularity even though it’s one of the most successful anime/manga. As for one piece and dragon ball both are very popular And pretty much is extremely popular in both japan and America And both are very popular in Latin America also. dragon ball and one piece are literally at the top of all time manga, one piece has he MOST manga sales of all time and dragon ball is ranked number 2, and the dragon ball franchise as a whole and the anime is the most successful, it’s just that dragon ball is pretty much everyone’s childhood it won’t be mentioned because of that fact people already know how big it is and good, also anime elitist (usually American anime fans) hate dragon ball, in America it’s either you don’t like dragon ball or you hate for no reason. Japanese watch anime for enjoyment and they don’t analyze it, American anime fans tend to do it too much that’s why they appreciate “overrated” anime in America way more than us. as for one piece everyone loves it in japan, it makes no sense why it’s not here it rules japans and so much fans mention it manga or anime it doesn’t matter.
I recommend asking them more about the anime they didn’t know about and explaining what they are and asking why they think those are more popular abroad than in Japan. I felt like this video was monotonous because the answers were pretty much the same so I think creating more of a discussion on how interests differ between cultures. I think no one mentioned cowboy bebop, I think the reason why they didn’t mention it is more interesting than people listing off the anime they know for an entire video.
This is the work of the Organization! Hououin Kyouma will destroy the Organization and reach Steins Gate! A side from the joke I am sad that none knew Steins Gate
It was probably too nerdy (too otaku) being made more so for the anime fanbase. Lots of otaku elements. Just a guess. They seemed to know the more popular titles on the list. I think Kaguya is supposed to be pretty popular so maybe that was just very new. Some of them knew it and others didn’t.
They seem to know a lot of them so next time it would be better to ask if there are any that they do not know. Having to read out the entire list each time seems rather troublesome.
It's quite popular in the West too. Many times it ranked first on myanimelist anyway. Gintama is wonderful and has so much depth presented in the funniest and shallowest ways. There's nothing like it outhere.
@@o_oro-q1k They break all rules, can't be helped..They have a pretty strong fan base to be able to do another movie. I guess all those complaints about money were real ahaha. Awwww ❤️
What i’m upset about is how steins; gate isn’t that popular, it was mind blowing for me at least, that’s something i can save to watch later in life when i want to ride a virtual rollercoaster
yeah, it hurt my soul. Though the anime is 10 years old now so it would make sense that it faded into obsurity, even with Zero being released 2 years ago. Though I will say its probably much more famous in akihabara and ikebukuro
I like seeing the Japanese Sign Language in A Silent Voice. I've recently watched some videos about what was shown in the film, and how it compares to American Sign Language.
I've noticed her body language as well. She looks uncomfortable; most likely, she was embarrassed by this and kept looking at the window to see if anyone was watching them talk about this subject
It seems like this is a list of how highly an anime is rated as opposed to what is popular in general. Way more people actually watch DragonBall and Naruto than Fullmetal Alchemist. (But Fullmetal Alchemist is generally considered by the west as one of the best anime of all time.) I'm also surprised Death Note isn't on this list.
Remember though to be counted on MAL you have to have an account to vote. The MAL charts show the fans that cared enough to make an account and record their scores. People like that aren’t always the same audience that watches Dragonball, Naruto, etc. Though they do care about FMAB and I think Naruto actually is on the MAL popular list. Death Note is also on the popular list. #1 iirc. The list shown in the video is the ranked (by score) all anime chart in MAL.
Death Note has a cheesy sounding name so I almost didn't watch it but it is legitimately one of the best animes. It should have ended when... SPOILER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! when L dies.
Some folks really can over-hype the 1988 adaptation of Legend of the Galactic Heroes and the kind of audience it caters to isn't everyone, but I haven't enjoyed a series as much as I did LotGH in a very long time. If you like classical music (the score was very well chosen imo), the series will deepen your appreciation for the genre and you'll have some great episodes to be reminded of whenever you hear pieces again.
Wow, can't believe no one is this video has ever heard or seen Legend of the Galactic Heroes, Probably more of us have seen here in the west rather than those of around our generation in Japan, though maybe more older people who grew up in the 80's and 90's would've seen it. They are clearly missing out on an amazing hidden gem of a series (also you should check it out, Yuta).
NGL, I don't usually skip videos, but these REALLY need editing down to make interesting to watch, I just ended up clicking through and then stopping as it is just people reading the same list over and over again.
The questions were bad, all 3 questions could've simply been reduced to: "Which of these anime is your favorite and why" "Do you agree with this ranking list?" The 3 questions were virtually the same, disappointing video.
Not just because it’s old. I’m sure it has something to do with it being a 110-episode long political war drama. Not something your average Joe would be checking out, normally. At least I would assume so.
I like how a lot of them liked Haikyuu. I feel like with western fans it is popular but not widely beloved like a lot of the others on this list. It's just that the fanbase is SO PASSIONATE about it that it can make rankings like this.
From that list, I've seen Hunter x Hunter(both versions), bakamonogatari series(though only 2 of them), Clannad(first season) I watched a bit of gintama, I don't think I even made it through half of season one though.
It's worth noting this is based on review scores, not popularity. Very few people have actually seen Legend of the Galactic Heroes and Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu but the people that did gave them very high scores.
I think a lot of them mix up FMA 2003 and Brotherhood. (I may be wrong but I think that the 1st anime was way bigger in Japan in the otaku community back in the days than Brotherhood when it aired, while Brotherhood is bigger overseas nowadays due to the international community becoming wider in the 2010's)
Descending Stories: Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju is the only one on this list i haven't heard of. Mob Psycho is favorite, sad stein's gate didn't get any love from the survey takers.
I have watch 178 anime and I am an Indian and I want to go to Japan because it's my favourite country to travel, talking with people with Japanese sometimes, go to the Akhibara and my dream is to go to Japan after 10 years...learning Japanese from you mister...
It is weird I thought Clannad was more known, because I have seen it trending worldwide a lot of times when it is metioned in some way or another in Japan.
I liked seeing that March Comes in Like a Lion was well known, maybe we get a third season :), Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju too. Really underrated anime in the west IMO.
first time i ever went to japan. one of the things that surprised me the most was that many of the things , like anime / manga we are told are really popular in the west are really not that popular at all in japan. There are just soo many anime in japan airing all the time the second an anime is finished its pretty much not talked about or advertised anymore. The most popular anime by far thats advertised and has merch like crazy is by far one piece, the rest is what is ever trending that week b4 it vanishes in mass amounts of anime released every month.
Although it doesn’t seem underrated, I’m actually surprised of how steins; gate isn’t that popular. This was literally one of the greatest things I’ve ever experienced as a film viewer. There are only a handful shows/movies that have ever moved me with such magnitude, and steins gate is one of them, and I watch a lot, as in a ton of things in different genres.
bc it doesnt reflect or have themes of japanese culture and lifestyle so its not as popular...thats why they can't relate to it compared to anime like Gintama, Spirited Away, Mob Psycho and anime films like Your Name, Lie in April, A Silent Voice and other anime the interviewees say they know and watched
It's my favorite site for scores and stuff and tho it has a lot of recency bias I am happy Rakugo Shinjuu, A silent voice, Spirited away made it here. Compare this to any other site where no 1 and no 2 is always Naruto and One piece and sometimes FMAB. Edit: This is only based on score. Mal has different sections for popularity and favourites where u will see Death note, mha, Naruto, One piece.
MyAnimeList is a list made by elitist weebs who thinks their reviews matter and affects the world. They're basically people who has the same mindset of Reddit mods. They think they influence and are powerful but they are really not. Which is why the list should be taken with a grain of salt.

@@seraby7151 thats pretty sad to hear considering how good steins gate is
MAL has a pretty huge user count, although what's in top anime doesn't necessarily the popular.
@@stealthbrandon One Piece is rated highly on MAL too though, it has over 8.4 I think, and most of the series on that list have scores over 9
even it was a top 20 popularity, the big 3 and db are rather low on the list considering their title.
Cowboy Bebop and LoGH weren't even mentioned ,_,
Steins Gate too
Cowboy bebop was not famous in Japan
Cowboy bepop is western type

Time travel plot... Really?
@@yordygarcia7671 yes. It is a masterpiece
@@Robomandude One of my favorite animes and I've watched over 150 animes from start to finish in completion.
@Peter Johnstone No one is in that gang.
And annoying to watch. I actually stopped half way through the video. The interviewer obviously had no interest/input about the topic either.
Just just cut out the boring stuff and add the conclusion by editing
seems like Gintama is only populer in Japan
It's quite popular in the West too. Many times it ranked first on myanimelist anyway. Gintama is wonderful and has so much depth presented in the funniest and shallowest ways. There's nothing like it outhere.

I like seeing the Japanese Sign Language in A Silent Voice. I've recently watched some videos about what was shown in the film, and how it compares to American Sign Language.
Monogatari series is depressingly underrated. It's superb & should be appreciated.
Well its top12ratong wise..only if people in the West watch more o
I tried to watch it, I was confused at why was going on and dropped it. I'll prob have to give it a try again.
It's called pedogatari.
The girl with grey shirt and black mask seemed REALLY impatient or worried about something.
(But Fullmetal Alchemist is generally considered by the west as one of the best anime of all time.)
I'm also surprised Death Note isn't on this list.

It is famous but not known in Japan as "Legend Of The Galactic Heroes." If it had been labeled "銀河英雄伝説" the answer would have changed.
NGL, I don't usually skip videos, but these REALLY need editing down to make interesting to watch, I just ended up clicking through and then stopping as it is just people reading the same list over and over again.
I watch his video on x2 speed
The questions were bad, all 3 questions could've simply been reduced to: "Which of these anime is your favorite and why" "Do you agree with this ranking list?" The 3 questions were virtually the same, disappointing video.
@@Legaliaaa yup my thoughts exactly
Woow everybody knows fullmetal alchemist, really cool that it's still relevant in Japan so long after it finished!
There's a disturbing number of people who haven't watched Steins;Gate. *laughs in 9.12*
At least one of them had watched Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju. it's sad that this masterpiece hasn't been watched by many.
Legend of galactic heroes (number 5) is truly a legendary masterpiece but because its old many young generations didn't heard of it
Not just because it’s old. I’m sure it has something to do with it being a 110-episode long political war drama. Not something your average Joe would be checking out, normally. At least I would assume so.
i've heard of it, still ain't watchin it
I like how a lot of them liked Haikyuu. I feel like with western fans it is popular but not widely beloved like a lot of the others on this list. It's just that the fanbase is SO PASSIONATE about it that it can make rankings like this.
I recognized that the interviewer said 海外 in her question at 2:06 thanks to the free lesson you emailed on October 1.
From that list, I've seen Hunter x Hunter(both versions), bakamonogatari series(though only 2 of them), Clannad(first season)
I watched a bit of gintama, I don't think I even made it through half of season one though.
2:22 Love this guy. He is the weeb who doesn't hold back. His line "dragon Ball, Naruto and One Piece represents the anime" shows off his greatness.

Mob Psycho is favorite, sad stein's gate didn't get any love from the survey takers.

first time i ever went to japan. one of the things that surprised me the most was that many of the things , like anime / manga we are told are really popular in the west are really not that popular at all in japan.

Over 70-80% of this video is just a waste of time. There is nothing interesting about people reading the same list over and over again. Starting from the half of the video they even stoped asking about opinions and it just was just reading the list.
First time I gave a video of yuta a thumbs down because the quality of the video was non-existent
