  • Learning how to tune a 7 second, 1800HP world record holding drag car!
    With no set recognized training pathway to becoming a professional EFI tuner, it’s hard for some starting out to see what they need to do to reach their goals within the industry. At TX2K Devin Schultz of Boostin Performance talked Andre through how he went from twisting spanners on simple builds as an internetless 16-year-old through to tuning the Red Demon, the World's Quickest and Fastest AWD Mitsubishi with a 7.047 @ 204 MPH record as well as separate blistering 215 MPH run down the quarter.
    Devin talks about how over time the success of the 95 DSM project saw others begin to seek him out for tuning services which then grew into a full-time career and how advancements in ECU and turbocharger technology is the main drive behind cars going faster and faster down the strip and around the track.
    Also discussed are the advantages of strain gauge setups and how they operate, boost by gear, future goals for the Red Demon and how ECU processing speeds are the next thing on the horizon that will see performance increased even further.
    Due to injury the Devin and the Red Demon were not running at this event but we're excited and watching closely for them to crack into the 6's in the future.

      Those high horsepower stick shift all wheel launches are so crazy looking. I can’t believe the 6’s are so close. Those DSM engineers must be proud.

    "we're using a 26x8.5in tire, so we're limited on how much power we can put down"
    Yeah Devin, it's a small tire but you're turning ALL FOUR of them! 😂
    Gotta love the drag racers mindset.
    One hell of a car/driver combo.

    • @hpa101
      @hpa101  4 роки тому

      Yes but AWD/4WD setups are not simply something where you get double the traction just because you are doubling the wheels you have to turn. Weight shifts, there are driveline considerations and even the launch is different.
      The interview with JR on the ETS-G talks about this a little more if you're interested - Taz.

    Hopefully somebody can provide some insight, but I really don't understand how this car can run a 6.44:1 pressure ratio (80 psi) with a single turbo, when on every compressor map I've seen on turbos all the way to 3,000+ horsepower units, 5:1 is too high to land on even the least efficient island of the compressor map. On paper, this should only be blowing hot air and losing power compared to a lower boost level that would actually align with the compressor map, but clearly that isn't how it's working in the real world. What am I missing???

  • @mikejovi980
    @mikejovi980 5 років тому

    A couple questions, they are running a 30psi base pressure then achieving 80psi+ on "a good track" without c02 boost control.. when we know that the mechanical limitations are roughly x2 base boost.. So are they essentially free boosting it? And with the dropping out of boost on gearshifts why are more not running large recirculation valves to help keep that air in the system instead of wasting it on gearshifts aftermarket boxes or not..?

    • @AndrewMillhouse
      @AndrewMillhouse 5 років тому

      The 2X rule, as far as I know, only applies to open loop boost control. With closed loop, you control both sides of the wastegate and the peak is in a sense, unlimited.

    So what is preventing Red Demon from runnings 6’s. Why is the GTR throwing down 6’s and not Red Demon? Simply Red Demon being manual, or what other factors are there?

    Tuning in the late 90s was awful. Carburetor tuning was easier it seemed. I blew several DSM 4g63s head gaskets and even bent rods burnt pistons tuning and chasing speed. Definitely a generation X proud era of life. Now tuning is much simpler with wide bands, reliable injection systems and pumps.
