I just got one. I didn't want to repot, but it was extremely root bound. It's now under the grow light pretending to be dead. All I did was give it a more comfortable pot. I have had this thing for less than a week, and I'm over it

Jeez! You weren’t even joking. 🙄 I received a pink polka dot in the mail late due to hurricane Ida suddenly popping up after it had shipped. Of course she looked totally dead but I decided to see what I could do to revive her. I cut back leaves a few at a time. Her branches were still hanging over the pot despite new leaf growth lol. I loosely tied them up to bamboo and put her with a group of other houseplant “friends.” Then I see your vid and rolled my eyes at her literally. Turns out I have horrible sinuses that have required surgery so I sleep with a humidifier and even though I live in the Deep South where it’s super humid, she wanted to be in MY room next to the humidifier and the window. It’s like she sensed her “paradise” was nearby and once I moved her, I could literally see leaves and stems moving ever so slowly until she was standing up again. 😂
    Thanks for your help!

Thank you so much!!! I thought I was going insane. I have accidentally Killed 3 in the last month. One day fine next morning, looks like no ones been near it ever. 1 was to close to the heater. 1 was eaten by my cat. The last 1, have no idea why, but each one hurt and I cried. My granddaughter talked me into trying once more. Hopefully, I think after this video I might be able to do it. Pleas keep fingers crossed!. I take care of abused animals and I swear this plant is much harder to care for! I'll keep you updated.

My polka dot plant is a humongous dinosaur. I guess it didn't have enough light and also I gave it a bit of a large pot. As a result, it grew giant leaves and stretched out a bit. It seems like most people are going for the compact growth, but actually I love how it looks. You get a lotta foliage for a small footprint haha. I just wish I saw someone else with a dinosaur polka dot plant, makes me feel like I'm doing something wrong lol! I noticed that it gets hairy when it's trying to flower. Also I keep it in a self-watering pot.

I'm thinking of using bigger pots with mine as it grows. In the wild they can get pretty big. I wouldn't mind mine being big. I like bigger plants anyways. I just got mine today because I had the opportunity to get it for cheap at a small nursery and it is pretty colorful. Mine is like a reddish pink color. Almost a hot pink color. Definitely an interesting plant.

This plant is definitely a drama Queen. I had a whole plant die on me but I managed to clip a piece to prop before it passed. I put it in leca with a hydro nutrient and she’s growing so pretty and pink. She lives on the windowsill above my sink in the kitchen, no direct sunlight ever but bright. I keep the water level below the roots in a none draining container. My humidity loving plants lose their minds in leca.

I’ve literally killed this plant many times. I thought I killed it once, cut it all back and it miraculously gave me new growth. Then it started getting leggy despite being up against a south facing window... tried propagating it from the leggy stems, the propagations looked like they were growing and then they got mealybugs. The original plant died (don’t remember why). I treated the mealybugs and the two propagations seemed to start growing again... until they weren’t 😡😤 the leaves kept falling off, they were tiny, they got crispy, they got mealybugs again... just overall problem after problem after problem. I thought the direct sunlight was making the leaves crispy but even with indirect light or further back from the window, the leaves never stopped falling off. Literally never understood what the heck was wrong aside from everything apparently 🙄 they were always leggy and the leaves were always tiny and always fell off. No matter how much I changed light, water, humidity etc 😭 I gave up and they all died. I think this is the one plant I truly hate. Don’t know if I’d buy again 😭😫🥺

My room is also very low humidity and I didn't want to turn my room in to a sauna. I have my polka dot plants in the window sill and set up long pebble trays on both sides of the plant and keep water in the pebble trays. After doing this and new leaves grew in the drying/shriveling of the leaves stopped and my once sickly polka dot plant started getting lush and growing some gigantic leaves as well as sending up some very tall flower shoots and has been blooming like crazy. The pebble trays do a very good job at keeping just the air around the plant nice and humid without turning an entire room in to a sauna like a humidifier can.

Now, go pet that puppy! 🐶👋
Also, I have a “tri-color” polka dot and it seems most of the colors have fled, leaving an essentially completely green (with light spots) plant.
What did I break? 😭 Is it possible to revive the reds and pinks?

@@TylerMossop Sorry for the wicked late response! I originally had it in almost direct sunlight for part of the day but then moved it behind some of my other plants, but it was still pretty bright in there for a lot of the day. I guess I’ll just have to keep playing musical sun for a while.

  • @cefcat5733

Indirect bright light, NW or NE light, in the northern hemisphere, a humid room like the kitchen, put it on the window sill, the rays of the sun should never directly shine in, it bends over it's long stems when it is thirsty. Just water the top surface of the soil, wait... If it is still drooping then give it a tiny bit more. You can stake them up too. It will get about 2 feet tall if you don't pinch off of the top then it will flower pale lilac purple on the white one and purple on the red and the pink ones. So far no pests. It can get taller. Put cuttings in a clear glass, remove bottom leaves under water level... Put these on the window sill and let the light shine in on the stems. Roots will grow. Sometimes one cutting does better than the others. Still experimenting. I guess you could set the whole pot into a plate or shallow bowl of water to get that humidity he recommends. I find this plant one of the least problematic except that you have to watch it daily and give it that little bit of water on the top to get rid of droopiness. I moved mine into the South window now but it is behind a sheer curtain. The window is open there with cool night air so I suspect it won't like that or will get more thirst. A UA-camr said to give it more sun... It might be ok in winter but I would not try this Southside experiment in Summer. I might switch it to morning sun SE with no window if this experiment doesn't work. Another plant from Madagaskar is doing fine there. Wow. Wanted to know if it hates cold wind or not.... Thanks.

The red one shines like stained glass windows and got more rich pink purple flowers and the green one has bloomed since being in the south window with petite white flowers. It likes the sun in that window for sure. That blooming response came quick! Amazing. Have fun.
