The melted cheese is saganaki, just a delicious hunk of cheese (usually kefalotyri [sp?] or Kasseri) dredged in flour and shallow fried in olive oil, typically the staff will flambé it table side with some brandy, yelling “OPAAAAA” then they’ll put out the flames with lemon juice. I could seriously eat 10lbs of it with fresh bread and a simple horiatiki salad. Greece might actually be the food to convert the two of you into veggie lovers.
Greek from Athens here! Kalimera! Yes, the correct pronunciation is "yee-ros" instead of a Gyro. The places you went for food are 100% run by actual Greeks since the souvlaki has fries in it like the originals here (although its the modernised post-1980s version). The cheese that you had in that restaurant is called "saganaki" and its a pan-fried semi-hard cheese called "Graviera/Kefalograviera". Its absolutely amazing and a great starter. Although we eat it straight up without the bread and contrary to popular belief, it never comes "in flames/flambe". In Greece at least.... I would also like to add that the Greek salad you got was authentic and that makes me so happy due to the many "fake" versions with lettuce that exist. You guys truly made my morning and i hope you liked the samples of our dishes that are so rare to find abroad! Filakia (kisses) from sunny Greece!
Have Greek friends who used to fly in from interstate just to come to Kalimera - one of the few places in Australia which does pork gyros (most only do lamb) with chips inside.

Greek fan from Thessaloniki here :) We take pride on how well we treat our guests, hospitality is something that is taught to us from a young age. We will always try to share our food and make new friends while we are at it! You nailed how to pronounce gyros, it is indeed "Yee-rosh" which is the cuts of meats either pork or chicken, "souvlaki" is the skewered meats which can still be either pork or chicken, you can ask for a pita with a skewer in it if you prefer the meat to be a bit more chunky! The deep you enjoyed in the Greek Tavern was Melitzanosalata, eggplant salad, basically we bake eggplants in the over, take the peel off and then strain the "flesh" of the eggplant, mix some yogurt with it and garlic with a bit of vinegar as well and there you have it! Traditionally lukumades are eaten with honey and nuts or almonds on them. Later on we started putting on them chocolate of other flavoring sauces. Thank you very much for enjoying the foods and conveying the feeling :) P.s. We are louder when in great numbers or enjoying ourselves a bit too much :P

i'm greek and i would like to say this...Greek traditional pita soyvlaki ( pork skewer ,pork gyros) does not contain potatoes and the reason is that u r missing the true taste of meat and veggies such as tzatziki sauce ,tomato, onion, parsley and paprika ... now the potato inside pita gyros or pita soyvlaki skewer just gives only quantity, volume, and the feeling you are full. we have a moto says: about spanakopita appetite means if u r hungry you can eat everything..thanks nice video.
I love when ppl enjoy my country’s food and the atmosphere! So glad you guys tried traditional Greek food today. Definitely fly out to Greece if you can once in your life. Everyone’s so kind and really treats you like family plus the beautiful beaches and great food!
YES! I'm so glad you did a Greek episode! To answer your questions about souvlaki, what you both ate was actually gyros, pronounced just like you said. Traditional souvlaki is skewered meat, usually pork or chicken, sliced tomatoes, tzatziki and fries. We don't eat fries on the side when eating souvlaki because they are already in the wrap. I'm glad that you enjoyed your food!
Those Greek potatoes are definitely crack! They are slowly roasted in garlic, lemon and chicken stock with pepper and oregano for over an hour. Once I learnt how to make them many years ago from an old Greek-Lebanese neighbour of mine in Sydney they have been my fave side dish!
Greek Australian here both lived in Melbourne and born raised in Greece.. and this is the authentic Greek gyros.. i remember in Melbourne we only used to find chicken and lamp gyros without fries and with Lettuce salad..the most common gyros in Greece is pork.. I've been a fan for a long time glad to see a Greek vlog...
In case you are wondering, this is exactly how we eat in Greece when we go out. We make huge orders and eat until we can not eat anymore. Then we ask for the check and once the free dessert arrives, some space in our stomachs magically opens to finish the dessert.
As a Greek-Australian with an Asian wife, I find your white-yellow brotherhood compliment spot on! No other food can even compare to Greek and Asian food.

Yes, they are two different ones. The "non chip" one is how they used to make souvlakia before the 1980s. The "chip version" is the modernised one. They are both bomb.
You guys really do look like you both really enjoyed all the food today in fact loving it and look So excited. Usually you have been having food that’s ok or one or two items so so. Hi from Athens In Greece, souvlaki is pork or chicken meat on skewers, so in bigger pieces Gyros ( yearos ) is the shavings of the pork or chicken meat.
Those pitas you had for lunch looked exactly like the ones I had on Crete. Stuffed with fries which I thought was weird but oh so delicious. Dinner looked fantastic too and makes me want to go back to Greece! Thanks for the video from a fan in Ottawa, Canada.
I have no idea how Dalena is able to eat as much as she does and the kind of food that she does while still looking so amazing 😩 what’s your secret sis???
awesome that you showcased Greek food cause Melbourne has one of the largest Greek populations outside Greece what you mean you don't eat no vegetables?! oh that's okay i make eggplant
G'day guys Many people often seem to refer to some Greek dishes as middle eastern food, that's not the case, there's a clear difference. Keep up the entertaining reviews. Thanks
Greek fan here! 🤗🇬🇷 Yeegro/Gyros is what you ate but the fries are typical in most parts of Greece. Also souvlaki is chucks of marinated meat sometime served in a pita like Gryos. But you had some great dishes but they didn't flame the sagasaki cheese. Kali merria mean good day. It is used as a greeting like good morning.

Was is not just awesome to see such big smiles on J&D’s faces? Let’s hope soon that they can get back to travelling and enjoying food all over. Nice one guys 😀😀
From someone living in Europe it feels so weird to me seeing all the people together inside a restaurant without mouthmasks. I wonder when we will get there :(
a lot of Australia is good with the no mask rule, they do try to stay up on risks though to keep infection rates down. recently another state in Australia went on lockdown again as people have come up with covid at a fair I believe. stay safe and be careful, hopefully, everyone will be able to go without the need for masks soon and not just a couple of countries.
Great episode! So much better than the buffet one! After it was over, I realized that I was smiling the whole time! Must try some here in Hawaii. Hopefully it's as good as your experience!
Once the world is back to normal, you guys absolutely need to go to Greece. It's super beautiful, and the food is amazing. As much as I enjoy the Asia vlogs, you guys should switch it up! The Balkans are amazing in general. Would make for some great content for sure!
Greek food is awesome! I didn’t see you eat the avolegmeno soup! A chicken based soup that is super lemony with carrots and orzo pasta…you must try it next time! Would love to see you do a video on Aboriginal cuisine since I have never tried that!! Great video!

Me and my fam have been going to Jim’s tavern for years it’s 💯 my mouth is watering watching this !!!!!!
love u guys so much, ur videos make me so happy :')
Reminded me of Athens…the last place I visited in Dec 2019 before all the restrictions… good times…. The Souvlaki in O’Kostas didn’t have fries in it but the one in Kosta’s had a bit of fries in it
Yes, they are two different ones. The "non chip" one is how they used to make souvlakia before the 1980s. The "chip version" is the modernised one.
They are both bomb.
Good to see Chonny and Delena really enjoying Greek food
Thank you Chonny for your support to Greece
You guys really do look like you both really enjoyed all the food today in fact loving it and look So excited. Usually you have been having food that’s ok or one or two items so so.
So good that you both love it so much. You guys should come to Europe. Look forward to the next video 🤣😋 “queen of potato’s” such an accurate statement.
The slab of cheese is called Saganaki. Usually the dish comes out flaming and they squeeze fresh lemon juice before they serve it to you.
It was the best
The cheese is probably halloumi
@@otogigamer it's a Greek cheese called Graviera
One of the best couples on the internet!! You two are fabulous! Love your channel!! Have you done snacks and desserts mukbang of all your cravings??
Been watching Chonny’s videos since the days when he had the long “‘emo” hairstyle 😂 never not enjoyed a single video from you dude!! Always here early!!
Hi from Athens
In Greece, souvlaki is pork or chicken meat on skewers, so in bigger pieces
Gyros ( yearos ) is the shavings of the pork or chicken meat.
I've never had Greek food. Now I gotta try it.
I’ve tried so many different foods from different countries but never Greek 😭 it looks like all the stuff I love 🥰
Those pitas you had for lunch looked exactly like the ones I had on Crete. Stuffed with fries which I thought was weird but oh so delicious. Dinner looked fantastic too and makes me want to go back to Greece! Thanks for the video from a fan in Ottawa, Canada.
Awesome video, actively searching for greek food around this I am currently traveling to.
I have no idea how Dalena is able to eat as much as she does and the kind of food that she does while still looking so amazing 😩 what’s your secret sis???
Seeing how dainty and slowly she eats, I would guess that’s the reason :3
awesome that you showcased Greek food cause Melbourne has one of the largest Greek populations outside Greece
what you mean you don't eat no vegetables?! oh that's okay i make eggplant
G'day guys
Many people often seem to refer to some Greek dishes as middle eastern food, that's not the case, there's a clear difference.
Keep up the entertaining reviews.
Thanks
Kalimera has earned its reputation. Simple but tasty.
I feel so amazing and happy when other nationalities visit us god bless you🥰🥰🙌🙌
Omg the GREEK food 🤤looked Absolutely DELICIOUS..The scallops ,calamari ,the egg plant dip and the potatoes looked DIVINE and the donuts too ..Basically all of it was good ..Such a great video Chonny and Dalena your Channel is one of my favourite and I look forward to vids always ...x❤️🥰

You two are looking amazing in this episode! And the food looked so yummy! I didn't know Greek cuisine had eggplant dips, I need to try it^^ (I've only had it once from another country and it was really good).

Was is not just awesome to see such big smiles on J&D’s faces? Let’s hope soon that they can get back to travelling and enjoying food all over. Nice one guys 😀😀
this episode makes me want to try the greek food in my city. it looked so good and like such a good experience.
From someone living in Europe it feels so weird to me seeing all the people together inside a restaurant without mouthmasks. I wonder when we will get there :(
Hopefully soon Arlin! Stay safe my friend
No masks while sitting down at restaurants here in Athens.
a lot of Australia is good with the no mask rule, they do try to stay up on risks though to keep infection rates down.
recently another state in Australia went on lockdown again as people have come up with covid at a fair I believe.
stay safe and be careful, hopefully, everyone will be able to go without the need for masks soon and not just a couple of countries.
Same here and I’m from Canada. It’s so messed up.
As a fellow Canadian, i can agree Canada is kinda messed up at the moment
Stayed up almost to 5am to watch this yeeee .
Great episode! So much better than the buffet one! After it was over, I realized that I was smiling the whole time! Must try some here in Hawaii. Hopefully it's as good as your experience!
I went to Kalimera 2 nights ago.It was pretty yummy!!
Once the world is back to normal, you guys absolutely need to go to Greece. It's super beautiful, and the food is amazing. As much as I enjoy the Asia vlogs, you guys should switch it up!

Greek food is awesome! I didn’t see you eat the avolegmeno soup! A chicken based soup that is super lemony with carrots and orzo pasta…you must try it next time!
Would love to see you do a video on Aboriginal cuisine since I have never tried that!!
Great video!
You should go to stalactites as well! It’s so good my parents go every time when we go into the city
My sister showed me a video from you guys and ever since then I watch you everyday ❤️
Love your videos! 😊💕
Greek food is my absolute favorite to get with my family. We usually get Gyros with Metaxa sauce and cheese on it with chips. It's my absolute all time favorite
Finally your eating Greek food Melbourne has the best.

Kalimera(good morning)
Greek hospitality is the best will always fill your tummy
We love greek food! Mediterranean cuisine is our favorite and very healthy. We hope to travel to Istanbul, Greece and Syria to explore the culture and food. Please try a dish call "paella" originally from Valencia, Spain.
You are so amazing both of you !!! Enjoy!!!!
Awesome glad you enjoyed it
OMG those chips at Kalamera, I would have got a side of tzatziki to dip them in !
The resentment for vegetables are read all in Dalena’s eyes🤣
*.....👀 Damn veggies....Who sent you...?....*
hopefully this isn't too random, but is Kuya in your name the Filipino word for older brother or is it just coincidence ?
@@leannewheeler5351 You’re correct! That’s what Kuya means. But, Kuya isn’t in my name. Just on social media haha
CHONNY's word for the day "FANTASTIC"
