Best way to make sure that you're moving frequently with a standing desk is to always make sure your glass of water is full next to you. Not only will you have to move to refill it, but you'll also move when you have to use the restroom and as an added benefit, you stay hydrated!
I used to do that, but then you have to pee all the damn time. Now I just drink a bunch of water after I eat, and then I don't have to pee as frequently (still the same amount of water in the day overall though).

i recently switched to a makeshift standing desk because of my excruciating hip joint. i've noticed SUCH a difference. this is great for people who have a sedentary work lifestyle. i'm working from home these days so i sit 80% of the time and use my standing desk periodically. this switch has helped so much with my tight hip flexors
Been using a standing desk for little over 2 years now. One thing I will note about it is that once you've accustomed to spending so much time on your feet, sitting becomes incredibly uncomfortable. Like at a class lecture or the movie theater.
I've used a standing desk paired with an anti-fatigue floor mat for about two years, and things are going well. I rarely sit, but I do frequently leave my desk to talk with co-workers. I have no back pain anywhere, but I'm pretty good about thoracic spine and low back exercises, and I think of the standing desk as just one tool in the box.

Can you guys have a follow-up video about standing at work all day? I stand at my desk literally 10-11 hours a day and do a 30 minute brisk walk at lunch. Great video. But I have some questions for you. 1. How does this affect someone who has varicose vein issues? 2. Is a walking desk (with a low power slow speed treadmill) an even better option?
Another good option, less interrupting than raising-lowering the desk, and letting you change posture more often is Movably Pro, a good review here: ua-cam.com/video/hUjkbMc_xBw/v-deo.html
To alternate the work standing with the chair, it is indicated for those who are dissatisfied with the chairs, in this way they get to appreciate them, and they will be satisfied with even the worst chairs. The main beneficiaries remain the producers, who no longer have to justify the harm that their products cause.
I have the varidesk and it is difficult to bring up the desk I have two monitors on the desk, so when I have to raise it I’m scared to pull my back and also my forearm muscles. I have to lean over the desk to grab the side levers that are too far back. I wish the varidesk was made like the one you show. Definitely a plus to have a stand up desk!!
I'm basically 163 lbs and sitting on my ass for the past 2 years due to WFM, i have now decided to stand (at least half the time now) during work. we will see what happens now huhuhuh
For me, my Osteopath identified that I was suffering from poor posture in the cervical area. What puzzled me was why I didn't feel any pain but I have experienced severe dizziness and balance problems. Can it be possible that poor posture from sitting at a workstation using a computer can wreak havoc with your proprioceptors?
Typically, anything we do in excess can have a negative impact on our health. This applies for things that are even suppose to be beneficial for us. They do mention in the video a ratio of standing, sitting, and moving to avoid excessive standing. I’ve instructed patients with musculoskeletal impairments (specifically with low back pain in the example Im about to mention) to attempt to force yourself to take a quick break from standing at work by laying down and allow the disc some free time from compressive forces. I believe it’s important to compare sitting and standing from a few viewpoints and try to weigh out the benefits. With standing, we are constantly activating muscles throughout the body to address the information we receive from our visual, vestibular, and somatosensory systems. So standing allows us to maintain our strength so that we can performs functional daily activities with as minimal discomfort and potentially reduce an injury from occurring. Loading the bones while standing also activate the osteoblasts in our body to promote increase bone density. Compare that to the sedentary activities associated with prolonged sitting that can lead to weakness in the back, causing ligaments to become laxative, leading to lumbar pain which may begin to refer down into the leg if the issue is not addressed. With standing/movement we can also promote nutritional deliverance to areas such as the knee with synovial fluid that is within the joint capsule. All this is to say that sitting, I believe should still be a part of your work day but should be done in moderation. Same goes for standing. This comes from a student that’s studied physical therapy so if I stated any inaccuracies I hope Bob and Brad will correct me and educate anyone who reads this appropriately.
I hear you.....I worked at a pharmacy .....was required to stand....and did have problems as well. It's taken me almost 2 years to get back mobility....and less pain.....circulation issues...
Okay. Thought this was going to be cheesy and kindof lame but i'm pleasantly surprised. You guys are pretty entertaining! Keep it up! thanks for the lesson btw:)
I've been trying to stand but had terrible heel pain. Then you and others said what to do about it. PF and tibial something nerve pain treatment helped. strengh and stretching and then raising to drain fluid. Super helpful, just about no pain. But the fix for that was to just stand on your toes all day.
Good points. Informative and funny. Thanks. Two things I'd like to add: 1. Aside from back and other sitting-related pain and posture improvements, there's little evidence that standing at your desk is significantly better for your health than sitting. A lot of the claims are assumed based on how bad sitting is. 2. Sitting isn't the new smoking. Smoking is still much worse: "Thus, any level of smoking increases risk of dying from any cause by approximately 180% versus a 25% risk increase for sitting. Even light smoking (1-4 cigarettes per day) has been associated with a higher risk of mortality compared with sitting." Evaluating the Evidence on Sitting, Smoking, and Health: Is Sitting Really the New Smoking? Jeff K. Vallance, et al. With that being said, I'm looking forward to getting a sit stand desk and treadmill.
Are there any recommendations on what's the best footwear for standing? I work from home and depending on weather I'll either be in slippers or flip flops, neither of which strike me as something a chiropractor would recommend but maybe it doesn't matter
So.... what happens in 6 months? I head a lot of bad things with sitting but not a time frame of specific change with standing. (But I was distracted, maybe I missed it?)

You never mentioned what happened in six months using the stand up desk, even though that was the title of the video!
Great point! I will add this to our to do list!
Great video. But I have some questions for you.
1. How does this affect someone who has varicose vein issues?
2. Is a walking desk (with a low power slow speed treadmill) an even better option?
Varicose veins can be caused by sitting down too much
Another good option, less interrupting than raising-lowering the desk, and letting you change posture more often is Movably Pro, a good review here: ua-cam.com/video/hUjkbMc_xBw/v-deo.html
i love these guys
To alternate the work standing with the chair, it is indicated for those who are dissatisfied with the chairs, in this way they get to appreciate them, and they will be satisfied with even the worst chairs. The main beneficiaries remain the producers, who no longer have to justify the harm that their products cause.
LOVE the dad jokes.
Helpful information thanks
Needed this.
you guys are so funny. love this
3:06 almost made me spit my coffee haha
Ha. Now I have a new problem. I need a task manager to keep on the 20 mins standing, 8 mins sitting and 2 mins moving regimen. 😬
This was really helpful thnkuu
I'm basically 163 lbs and sitting on my ass for the past 2 years due to WFM, i have now decided to stand (at least half the time now) during work. we will see what happens now huhuhuh
For me, my Osteopath identified that I was suffering from poor posture in the cervical area. What puzzled me was why I didn't feel any pain but I have experienced severe dizziness and balance problems. Can it be possible that poor posture from sitting at a workstation using a computer can wreak havoc with your proprioceptors?
Could be the light frequency coming from the screen…it can disrupt sleep patterns, interfere with concentration, etc
Stood as a nurse and pharmacy tech since 1987....now my knees are bone on bone...my right hip also full of arthritis and every day is painful.
Thomas Engel My orthopedic surgeon assured me it is...years of 12hr shifts standing in pharmacy because sitting is not allowed.
KT I can give it try...thank you very much
Typically, anything we do in excess can have a negative impact on our health.
H Pyle Ohhh yes...circulation still a mess...sorry, wouldn't wish this disability on anyone
Okay. Thought this was going to be cheesy and kindof lame but i'm pleasantly surprised. You guys are pretty entertaining! Keep it up!
thanks for the lesson btw:)
Thank you for the nice comment! You are welcome :)
I've been trying to stand but had terrible heel pain. Then you and others said what to do about it. PF and tibial something nerve pain treatment helped. strengh and stretching and then raising to drain fluid. Super helpful, just about no pain. But the fix for that was to just stand on your toes all day.
You guys remind me of Bert and Ernie.
Good points. Informative and funny. Thanks.
Two things I'd like to add:
1. Aside from back and other sitting-related pain and posture improvements, there's little evidence that standing at your desk is significantly better for your health than sitting. A lot of the claims are assumed based on how bad sitting is.
2. Sitting isn't the new smoking. Smoking is still much worse:
"Thus, any level of smoking increases risk of dying from any cause by approximately 180% versus a 25% risk increase for sitting. Even light smoking (1-4 cigarettes per day) has been associated with a higher risk of mortality compared with sitting."
Evaluating the Evidence on Sitting, Smoking, and Health: Is Sitting Really the New Smoking? Jeff K. Vallance, et al.
With that being said, I'm looking forward to getting a sit stand desk and treadmill.
Party pooper
other than selling, I dont think you mentioned how it affected your body
Are there any recommendations on what's the best footwear for standing? I work from home and depending on weather I'll either be in slippers or flip flops, neither of which strike me as something a chiropractor would recommend but maybe it doesn't matter
We like Whitin shoes or more minimalist type shoes.
So.... what happens in 6 months? I head a lot of bad things with sitting but not a time frame of specific change with standing. (But I was distracted, maybe I missed it?)
You both look so fun 😃
