They cut this segment just when they were deciding how much to bet who between the men and the women would last longer without using modern conveniences. Fred said "How about $10?" Ethel: "What's the matter with $20?" Ricky: "What's the matter with $30?" Lucy: "What's the matter with $50?" Fred: "What was the matter with $10?"
Ricky has become so conversant in English that he understands the double meaning of the word "revolting". In the meantime, before they could receive the benefit of modern conveniences, the girls would have to wait a few years until the cast started doing Westinghouse commercials with Betty Furness. Obviously, the sponsor's products were so affordable that even Fred could afford them.
Maybe three pots, serving dishes, serving utensils, knives, forks, glasses, mixing spoons, other things like paring knives, peelers, cutting boards. Yeah, twenty seems about right.
At that time, A dishwasher was horrendously expensive and huge luxury. No one had them. Automatic washers were very new and clothes dryers were even newer. Most people at the time still had washers with wringers on the top. Having a complete automatic laundry was a huge luxury. Dishwashers did not become even remotely common until the seventies. My father designed them. They were even in the seventies, hugely expensive items.
Shows like this must be what made my dad retire at 60 and never lift a finger again, while my mom still makes all his meals, does the shopping, cleans the house, does the laundry, does all the dishes, does the yard work, etc etc. She never gets to retire.
Well I mean in those situations, it was one person making money. I mean it hasn't really changed in the way of asking. Unless there was a certain amount of wealth, I don't know of a couple today, including myself that didn't ask their spouse before they bought something expensive like a dishwasher. But now we don't say "I have to get my husband's permission". We say, "I need to discuss it with my husband first" or "my wife". The husband has to ask the wife too. So it's a discussion. But they both work. I mean if I, as a wife was making all the money and my husband didn't work but just took care of the house, I would definitely want him to get my permission before buying a big purchase. If I'm at work and I see on my bank account that $800 just went out and now I'm going to be $800 short for my mortgage payment because my stay at home husband decided to buy a dishwasher, then I'd be pretty pissed. He should have asked. And I would've said no, we can't afford it. I mean it's basically the same. Lucy was always spending money without asking him first. On another episode, she bought a $50 hat without asking and that would be like $500 today. I mean I don't see why asking to make a large purchase was such a shame
I love when Fred says he can’t even afford rubber gloves. lol
Lucy: "Ricky." 0:49
Ethel: "Fred."
Lucy: "We're revolting."
Desi: "No more than usual."
It looked like Fred’s actor actually broke too from that line 😂
I love Fred's look when Ricky says "No more than usual."

You poor thing. :(

67 here. Living in a 120 year old house. No dishwasher, except for me, myself and I. I sure would like a dish washer.
You just flip a swish 😅
20 dishes a meal!

20 dishes a meal? Who are they feeding, Jerrold Nadler?
Good one 😆.

@@SchlichteToven She said "twenty dishes", not twenty utensils.
They never explain why Fred sometimes wears a suit and tie, certainly not his nature.
Ya know, the women do all the shopping & cooking & serving; the men should at least wash dishes! ☺️
Saying how “easy” work was in the 50s because you “flip a switch” look at us now lol

You have dishwashers. They're called " your hands".
Screw dish washers l would have gone with a automatic washer and dryer !
20 dishes a meal??! For 2 people? How does that happen? Seriously curious
I'm guessing she's counting pots and pans and bowls etc. That easily adds up to twenty.
I live alone, but it is shocking how many dishes I dirty. I am a messy cook and I rarely eat take out.
@lisabaltzer4190 😂I relate 100%. Arghhh dishes just seem to be never-ending
I cut up my Amazon boxes and viola: 6 plates.
Which episode is this??
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
What horrible times when women had to ask their husbands to buy things ,,,,,,
