Had the news last week that I was successful and passed the process of becoming a retained firefighter which I start in October. This video really helped me when I was going through the stages! Can’t wait to start my lifelong ambition of being a firefighter 🚒👨🚒
I applied yesterday. But I'm a little scared of heights. The issue of stairs gives me a lot of respect. I have never been to heights or climbed stairs that high. 😢
Congratulations mate. I have my tests tomorrow. Any tips on how to pass? particularly the enclosed space and equipment assemble? what equipment did you have to assemble?Cheers
Ahh the bleep test. One of my favourite P.E lessons back in school. I used to repeat this mantra “Do not be the next one out” Congratulations on passing your test the second time round. So proud of you 😃
I remember one lesson when the last guy left just kept going and going even though he had no one left to outrun. We all just sat there doing absolutely nothing but waiting for him to finish for like 10 solid minutes. Show off
Went for my tests about a month ago, I passed 3/4. I went over the time limit on the equipment carry, that being said, I got a second chance and reduced my time by about 40 seconds. Happy to say I've passed my medical now too and am waiting on a start date for my recruits course. I couldn't tell you how many times I've come to watch this video, really was worth all those watches.
Literally just done my FRFT. Got 8.8 which is now the pass level (was practicing a week prior to this and highest I got was 7.2 so just bare in mind when you’re with others doing the real thing you realise you’re much more capable than you realise!) just gotta keep going! Smashed all the Job related tests. Got the uniform fitting soon so all is looking well so far! 😎
I loved this video man! So so interesting to see what the test procedures are to become a firefighter. Huge respect for you and your team for all your hard work of early mornings and late nights, saving people’s lives. Keep it up man and I can’t wait to see more videos like this in the future 🙌🏽
I just passed into the next stage which is the practical assessment stage! Thanks a lot for this amazing video. It definitely increased my knowledge and confidence!
Hey I’m 35 and have just applied. My dad was in the fire brigade for 30+ years as a station officer so taking inspiration from him. I found out this week that my application was successful and through to the next stage so just completed the talent screener test. Now to wait to see if I get thru to the next round…… I say, go for it. If it is something u truly want to do then there is no harm in trying.
@@shaz1204 hi, thanks for the message. I decided to try for the Police instead. My local fire service runs a booking system just to get to the open days and it kept selling out in seconds so got fed up and applied for the police instead....best of luck with your application, I'm sure you will do just great!
@@utilitarian ah well next of luck with the police. I was deciding between both and the fire brigade came up first. I’m bucks area so am lucky that they opened up applications for whole time firefighter apprentice so I applied the other week. Literally closed the application a week later, it’s so fast paced. My dad once said they once opened up a job for 10 positions in his borough and had over 1000 applicants 😳
Hi mate, thanks for making this video, I passed my bleep test and did alright during my day I think, the enclosed space was the only thing I think may have let me down but without this video I don’t think I’d be as half prepared for the day as I was, cheers man, awaiting a pass or fail
@@stevengetsfit I just watched Only the Brave.. highly recommended if you haven’t.. but you need a box of tissue nearby, horrible true story but terrific movie nevertheless.
Thank you for the feedback. I’ve been thinking about making something like this for a while but I worry I will put people off. I love the job but like anything there are negatives too
@@stevengetsfit yeah I really want to join so I think it would really help to know the positives and negative’s of the job I feel like most people should expect negatives considering the job your doing
Got my practical and fitness test tomorrow. 8.8 in Scotland for the bleep. Been smashing the bleep test for weeks now. The equipment assembly is the one test I'm shitting it for. It's the only one I've not been able to train for
@@stevengetsfit Smashed it mate. Equipment assembly was a skoosh. On to the interview stage. Absolutely buzzing. What a grueling day. Well deserved Chinese and some beers tonight x
Thank you for this video, I'm currently waiting for a reply back to start my tests. This really helped me on what I need to know and prepare for. Thank you so much
Hi mate, well done! I would do a video but I’d be worried about it being outdated now. From memory it was your general strengths, weaknesses, times you’ve worked well in a team and times you worked well on your own. How you deal with pressure etc. I think they were also keen to know my motivations on wanting to join, I guess to make sure you’re heads in the right place for it. Good luck
In my country the fitness test is simply run 3 KM within 13,35 mins , do 60 pushups in 1 minute and 60 crunches in a min.. but to pass the push-ups and crunches you just have to do 40 for both and stop you dont have to go all the way up to 60 ..
This is really useful, thank you! I'm trying to get into London. I failed the first physical test (passed 4 out of 5, just couldn't pull down the heavy weight) and now recruitment has been put on hold due to covid, but will pick up from where I left off. While I'm obviously disappointed that I can't get on the job sooner it's giving me more time to get stronger. I'm a petite woman and whilst I'm a long distance runner (so have the stamina and fitness) I'm not as strong as I need to be quite yet. Doing lots of arm workouts it the gym and getting stronger and stronger each week - fingers crossed for the next test!
I’m glad you found the video useful! Well done for doing so well with your first fitness test. As I said in the video, I failed mine on one thing last time and passed on the second. That set back makes the second time so much sweeter. Keep working hard and I know you’ll smash the next test 💪🏼
Hi Ellie, Do you mind me asking if it was the 60kg weight you needed to pull? I have my assessment on Thursday and this is the only thing I am concerned about!
I failed my first attempt at getting into LFB. Been operational three years now. Don’t give up! It’s a great job! Any questions feel free to ask. And good luck for the rest of recruitment and training!
The interview process is a nightmare...it is called pqa based ..... Personal quality attributes... very difficult, takes lots of preparation and you cannot just wing it....you are asked 3 questions.....eg...one may be .....they will say , the question is based on the pqa of working as a team ....then they say ....tell me a time when you worked as a team and overcame a challenge for eg....they have a list of buzz words and you must hit them.. you are given a guidance document before the interview with the areas they are looking for .
Great video Steven. Great advice and tips I’ve been trying to get in the fire service since I first applied when I was 18, been practicing the fitness tests every year preparing myself for the assessments and process hopefully I do make it and pass the assessments as I’m getting closer to the assessments and making it all the way. Never give up 💪 I look forward to future content of the fire service and videos!
Thank you so much! Really appreciate that and thanks for subscribing, I’ve subbed back 🙌🏼 keep working hard and you will 100% get there and when you do it’s so rewarding. And don’t take failures to heart, use them as learning experience and go again with the knowledge you got from them. Good luck with the assessment, fingers crossed for you 🤞🏼💪🏼
@@stevengetsfit Thank you Steven! I’ve followed you on Instagram too! Yeah I always look at the positives of the attempts I’ve had at the process. It’s been tough and challenging but it just drives me more to make it all the way. I’ve not got to the stage of the assessments yet but my time will come eventually. My application is on hold at the moment at Wickford fire station trying to be an Oncall firefighter and whole time eventually too, but while waiting to hear I’m down the gym, swimming running and keeping my fitness up, using equipment at home practicing the fitness tests too, thank you for the videos on advice on the gym as it’s really helped my workouts since the gyms have reopened!
Make sure you get yourself down the station if you’re allowed to, get to know the the crew and get any tips and advice from them. See if they can show you some of the equipment they carry on the pump as well, good chance for you to get learning early doors with that as well
@@stevengetsfit Thankyou Steven, I have met the crew and attend the training nights and watch the crew training. I joined the video call nights on Microsoft teams finding out more about the fire service and preparation ,chatting to lots of firefighters I’ve seen the appliance and station and they showed me tour of the station equipment, PPE and insight of the job. At the moment due to Covid I can’t attend the station training nights that I like to go to learn more about the job and watch different training drills they do to give me more knowledge. The station have held my application til end of May at the moment. Hopefully I hear from them soon and they put me through to the assessments fingers crossed 🤞💪
I remember one lesson when the last guy left just kept going and going even though he had no one left to outrun. We all just sat there doing absolutely nothing but waiting for him to finish for like 10 solid minutes. Show off
To be honest it was very similar to most interviews when I had mine. Motivations for wanting to join, strengths, weaknesses etc. Want to know you are joining for the right reasons and that you have the right mindset. Strong team work is key, over coming problems and being determined
Great video, thanks so much. I really want to be a firefighter. the fitness test does look challenging. I think i would find most difficult is the 32kg barbell lift and ladder lift because i can barbell curl about 25KG (including the bar) and bench press 24KG, so it's not exactly there. the ladder lift is basically like a bench press, right? you just lift it and it has to go over a line. the running test i think i can improve on, i do 500 meters on the rowing machine every single day, yet i might incresase that to 10000 meters. it's a LONG process, i really hope i get there, it's my dream to become a firefighter one day.
I’m glad you enjoyed the video! It sounds like you will be able to pass in no time really. The ladder lift was a bar type thing they put weight on, you curl it up and then change stance and push it over your head. I would recommend practicing a standing over head barbell press to practice for that. Keep working hard and the dream will come true 🙌🏼
@@stevengetsfit Thanks for replying, oh yes! Do you mean the "military press?" I do that! it's a really difficult exercise but i forgot to say, i can (is it called "overhead press?") do 22KG on military press. also for the 33kg barbell carry and walk, i just realised that you don't actually curl it as if you're doing barbell curls, you just carry it and walk! for some reason i was worried that they would ask me to barbell curl that weight but you just hold it with straight arms and walk haha. in terms of 500m on rowing machine every day, i hope thats enough. i looked at the website and they said nothing about bleep test, maybe times have changed and it's not there anymore.
Yeah with that barbell carry it’s literally just holding it while you’re walking. What you thought sounds awful haha, thankfully that’s not what’s needed 😂 so from what I’ve heard now there’s the option of the bleep test or a incline walk on the treadmill. It’s basically walking at 3.9mph for 12 mins and every 2 mins I believe the incline increases. You can’t run or touch the sides
@@stevengetsfit Thanks so much for getting back to me buddy, I really appreciate it. Yeah! Silly me, I don't know what came over me for them to ask me to barbell curl 33KG is very heavy don't think the average person can do that lol that's interesting, I'll look them up and I need to practice a bleep test to see what score i can get, although it doesn't say anything about that in their website at www.london-fire.gov.uk/careers/become-a-firefighter/fitness-tests/ maybe it's different for London, but thanks still, this is VERY useful information and I will try to get my fitness even better.
I wished I saw this video before today, I saw the thumbnail a few days but I didnt think I would need it. Turns out the exact same thing happened to me, failed the manual dexterity for the exact same reason. Trying not to feel devastated but its hard when recruitment isnt that often. Really wished I watched this video.
I’m sorry to hear that mate, but you’ll no doubt smash it the next time. It’s so frustrating as it proves that fitness or strength wasn’t the issue for you. Head up and I promise when you pass second time, you will enjoy it even more
I just did my assessment day and passed everything except the manual dexterity test, I am devastated and more nervous than ever about passing it when I re-take the tests next month.
I’m gutted to hear that, exactly the same as what I did. Don’t be nervous, you clearly did well with the physical side of things so make sure you keep up your normal fitness training to smash that again. Chances are it’ll be the same bit of equipment you have to put together again, just don’t panic and you’ll be fine. Good luck!
@@stevengetsfit thanks I appreciate the advice, it was also with ECFRS. Is there anyway I can prepare myself for the manual dexterity test or do I just have to try and stay calm on the day?
It depends on the equipment you had to use and if your station has one you can practice on. My advice is look at the instructions for as long as you need before you touch anything. Then when you do, try not to spend so much time tightning it up loads, on my test they didn’t even pick it up to look at it. That way it gives you more time to take it all apart as well
Hey Zach congrats on passing 5/6. Wondered if you have any advice for beep test? Currently getting level 8 my test is in a few weeks time. Do you get to choose between beep test and chester treadmill test? Thanks :)
I have my tests on 2nd December, slightly crapping it but seeing all this definitely gives me a heads up and settles nerves a tad. Also managed to break my thumb just last night but praying it doesn't hold me back! 😬
Best of luck Jade, I’m sure you’ll smash it! I’m pleased my video helped settle the nerves a bit for you. Oh dear, broken thumb doesn’t sound good, make sure you are careful so you have a speedy recovery!
Good luck, had mine a couple weeks ago and as long as you prepped for it I’m sure you’ll pass it no problem. Got my interview coming up so hopefully will be in soon🤞

hey man, Im just training atm just completed the hose carry which was probably one of the physically hardest things ive done haha keep up the videos man
Thank you Mark, I appreciate the feedback! If you look into recruitment process online it should say what qualifications are needed from school. I’m pretty sure you need a C grade or above at GCSE maths and English. Those who didn’t have that, you can sit an exam to qualify I believe
They dropped the beep test thank goodness as all it did was exclude the big strong candidates which is what is needed and selected small, thin weaker candidates that could run like Mo but couldn’t lift a match.
Yeah I had heard that was the case now, did you do the treadmill test walking at 3.9mph on an increasing incline for 12 mins? Can’t touch the sides or jog
@@stevengetsfit no , that’s the in service continuation fitness level for firefighters, ...tests are I think . Really decent video , very useful. Can you show any content of you on call and what it’s like from the fire engine to actually going to an emergency? I love anything to do with fire engines. It’s the thrill of blue flashing lights I think
Thank you! I’ll be honest it’s difficult to film much content when on shouts/jobs. The adrenaline takes over and I’m just in work mode to handle what we are going to. It is a bug thrill though when going to a job with the lights on
It can vary on how many you get, some days or weeks are busier then others. They can range from fires, RTCs (car accidents), animal rescue, flooding, automatic fire alarms, other station stand bys. Lots of different things you can attend
A very good video, thank you Steven. I'm an obese bastard, I'm fed up of being pathetic and weak. I would like to try volunteering as a firefighter (I cannot join military due to past mental health issues and refuse to join the rozzers since they are corrupt). For anybody in my position try watching some of those "embrace masculinity" memes and hit up the Zyzz.
Hey mate hope you are doing good, and are getting on a solid routine of exercise and cardio. If you are still wanting to get into the fireservice make sure you look a lot into the requirements and buy the guides. Knowing you are ready for all stages of the process really helps. Good luck.
All I can say is the recruits Course is so much harder than the practical test to get in. If you're only just managing to do the practical assessments you will struggle HARD on the recruits Course
I took my test on March, I passed everything on that day apart from the equipment carry. The issue wasn’t fitness, I was paired with a petit smaller woman and the first 30 seconds I blew past her and for some reason I decided to match my pace with hers ( I still don’t know why I did that) I failed by 40 seconds. As I mentioned fitness wasn’t an issue it was just the lack of “ killer instinct” on the day. I’m saying this to make sure you don’t make the same mistake.
I’m sorry to hear you did pass on this occasion, but I’m sure you will get there on the second. It sounds like you will be able to do it by focusing on your own performance. Good luck mate!
watching this right now and the taster session is in a week. i’m absolutely shitting myself about the bleep test mostly - i’m fine with everything else.
I’ve just passed my physical yesterday. This video has helped me quite a bit with getting ready. However I’ve noticed there’s bit of a difference between fire services, north wales fire and rescue service, we did equipment carry, ladder climb, confined space, ladder lift, casualty evacuation, and equipment assembly. No bleep test for us. On to medical next. Any pointers or what to expect?
Hi, well done for passing mate! Interesting that you say that, I had a feeling that each location would be different. Lucky that you didn’t have to do the bleep test haha. Not sure if this will be different to yours, but they did things like a urine sample, eye test, took my height and weight. You have lungs/breath tested by blowing on a something that’s tests the capacity of your lungs (tricky then you think, but they’ll tell you what to do) and a hearing test where you sit in a booth and press a button every-time you can hear a beep. That’s as much as I remember!
I am quite lucky that I don’t have a big fear of heights, although everyone says that until you’re up high and could fall 😂. I think the main thing is to focus on what you’re doing with the ladder and the safe way to climb and not to look down unless you need to if you’re scared. These ladders are more secure then your normal handyman decorating ladders, the 135 ladder is so secure it barely moves. To let go, you perform a leg lock by wrapping one leg around ladders rungs and then tucking your foot back on the same rung. When you’re in this position you are very secure. Sorry for the long reply, but hope this helps
I've always wanted to be a firefighter I still do now, I get incredibly upset when I see a fire truck go past my house, but im not smart enough to become one, nor fit enough, the fitness part I can work on but I'll never be smart, is there any advice you can give me on what I would have to do to become one? What sort of tests and stuff do they make you do?
You’re being too hard on yourself Tracie, I am sure you would be fit enough and intelligent enough for the fire service! I didn’t have to do a maths or English test due to my secondary school results but I know people who did and they found them okay. I would advise you going to your local station and finding out about their recruitment process
@@stevengetsfit thankyou so much, yes unfortunately I didn't do amazing at school, I was a bit of a rebel and I didn't pay attention enough, im ok at English but my maths is terrible, thing is my partner doesn't want me to be a firefighter even if I could do a test, so guess it's just a dream I'll always have that I can't fulfil but thankyou so much for your reply
Excellent information about this ,a great job that saves lives. Love the video! How many hours do you guys work per week and if somene faisl the trial can he redo it ?
Hi mate, great video and I just have a question, if you fail one thing like you did can you redo it in the same process (same year) or do you have to wait until the application process comes round again?
Thanks, glad you liked it mate! When I failed I had another test with a couple of months. It might be different for whole time though. You might need to wait for application dates
I know it has been 2 years since this video so might not hear anything. I've put my interest forward, now waiting for the appollo assessments to come next. I am just about worried about getting passed them to, hopefully get in to the training. Any advice on how to pass them or how to prepare for them?
Is there anyone you know at the station you are looking to join? I always think it’s great to see if you can come down and speak with the team and see if they can show you things there
@stevengetsfit782 I would feel a little silly to just turn up and start asking questions, or is that OK to do? There is people I can ask but just trying to get in touch with them now
That’s why I asked if there was someone you knew who already worked there. I was lucky enough to know someone which meant I went down and learned a lot about he process at the time
Good Video. Can you explain the knots you have learnt ? They seem difficult and complicated? What is the advice you would give to trainee firefighter? Please do more videos about fire services. I am planning to join 3-4years later.
Thank you! There were a number of knots that you should find online or at your local station. You do need to complete them all to get through training. Some include a bowline, round turn two half hitches, half hitch, figure of 8, figure of 8 on the bite, clove hitch, over hand knot and running bowline to think of some. I found lots of videos on UA-cam and also apps for your phone which will help. More videos coming soon, life has just got very busy all of a sudden!
I’m sorry mate I don’t, I’d check online on the recruitment part of their website, or try their social media. If not you can always go down to the station and ask face to face. Good luck!
When I applied I had to fill in an online matrix which was my on call availability (there is a minimum of 90 hours a week when I applied). It was there basic details about myself and from there I had an interview with the watch manager and a further interview as part of the recruitment process
I got to ask as I've been interested in joining the fire brigade is it like driving lessons in the sense of they give you lessons on how to do this thing before they assess you
For the fitness test, no. But when you get past this and the medical and get on your basic training then yes. You’ll have 2 week training course for on call followed by a number of weekends or week day night over 12 weeks. They teach you everything and then assess you to make sure you’re safe to ride (do the job)
That’s a good question, I’ll be honest I’m not too sure. I would check with your local station/recruitment team. I did have a medical which included an eye test but I don’t know about red/green deficiency colourblindness
We just went to a training place daily. It was at two different locations and we were there for 2 weeks 9-5 and then either 12 weeks after doing an evening course a week or 6 week of whole weekend
It might do Liam, there was someone on my course who was a reserve and he was great! Whether that’s a direct link I’m not sure, but I would imagine it helps
Thanks! I can't get a job just yet, but I know what I will be when I can! By the way, how many chances do you get to finish something I would expect 2!
It was an old bit of pumping equipment I believe, it’s not any equipment that is even used now or when I did it! Which is even more frustrating that I failed it first time 😂
What is mental is, in the military, our bog standard new recruits have to get to level 9.10 on the bleep test. Yet Firefighters only need to get to 8.6. In the end Firefighters then have to do a strenuous job and most the military sit on their ass behind a desk most of the week lol
Yeah I see your point. I still find it odd that the police bleep test is even lower than fire service. Would think you’d need to to be the same at least
Hello mate, Class video, I cannot find anywhere online how long you get for the equipment carry test and I'm currently completing it in around 13minutes, do you remember how much time you get to complete it in, Just want to know if I'm close to standard as got my fitness test in a couple of months, Cheers.
Hi, thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed the video. I will be honest I can’t remember exactly how long but I think 11 mins rings a bell for some reason. Your local station should be able to put you in touch with a recruiter within the service who can help
Hi great video I’m looking into applying for Devon and Somerset fire and rescue, my question is if you fail any of the tests can you re take and if you can how soon ?
Hey! Thanks for the comment and good luck with your application. Well I failed this fitness test and did it again in a month or so, not sure if there is a limit on amount of fails for things though
It was around 2/3 months worth of recruitment process from start to finish from application sent in to starting training. This includes things like interviews, medical, uniform fit etc
Hye there Loved your video. I have a question. I am from India🇮🇳 I just completed my firefighter training course here. I am interested in becoming a firefighter in UK. I wanted to know what is a procedure to become a firefighte in uk for other country's people.
Hey Arun, thank you! I’m glad you like my video. I’ll be honest I’m not too sure how this would work out. I would recommend going on the recruitment page for the fire service in the UK you are looking to join and contacting them about this. Good luck 🤞🏼
I want to be a firefighter as soon as I finish school next year inbetween the time before I go to the Royal Marines. Is it okay if I became a firefighter at 18 and then applied for the royal Marines at 21?
@@ht-ve9fe Hey man I think its a great idea, my gym instructor was in the Royal Marines, when he retired from the Marines he joined the fireservice. Haha. @@studentaviator3756 Thanks for letting me know. Yes I agree, I think they both attract people with similar goals and achievments in mind. I always think it's strange going from learning to save lives to learning to end them.
@@stevengetsfit Yep I recently had my taster day and got told the same by some firefighters, I was told you just have to pass the acceptable threshold within your two year "apprenticeship" I can start my application in two weeks! Any advice? & thanks for the reply.
No bleep test (as it stands, but can change dependent on the time of recruitmemt). I believe that it's just equipment carry. But I'd be inclined to train for both, as in do loads of running. Looking to get fit enough to pass a test is good, but the fitter that you are and can easily pass any physical test will put you in good sted for the future, and will make the training and your potential career a lot easier. P.s, I believe that they'll be opening up training again soon, but concentrating firstly on those who previously applied, but are still waiting to start.
Hi, thanks for commenting. You could go down to your local station to ask them about the recruitment process or apply online. These would be the best options. Good luck
Hi mate, my current local fire service aren't hiring at the minute. However have you got any ideas of how I can put myself in a good position to be selected once they do start hiring again, other than the fitness side of things? Is there anything they look out for on a CV etc? Thanks mate. Loved the vid
@@stevengetsfit I am wanting to go for the whole time position! Just wondered if there is anything they look out for in ideal candidates. Trying to give myself the best opportunity when hiring comes around again
Well it might be worth you seeing if there are any on-call positions at your local station if you live within 5 mins from it. Other then that any kind of first aid courses you could take maybe or seeing if you can visit your local station and speak to some of the team to show your interest. Whole time is a really difficult process as very few jobs come up and so many people apply! Good luck with it all mate, just be patient
What's the point of removing your hands from the ladder and looking down to identify an object? I mean how does this apply in a real firefighting situation? Also in a real situation is there a firefighter at the bottom holding the ladder?
If you need to use a hose or other equipment while on the ladder you need your hands. Performing a leg lock means you can safely use your hands for things like that. You would do to start yes, you always ask someone to foot the ladder
Because you might have to fight the fire from the top of a ladder and will have to perform the leg lock in order to keep your hands free to hold the hose. Yes it is against protocol to go up a ladder without it being "footed" and you would be a brave idiot to do so.
You get used to it. If I can do it im sure you can. To be honest when you are going up the ladder you are looking mainly at your hands and not realising how high you are. Once you do it a good few times, you stop worrying about the height.
18 years in the job, and still not happy with heights. If when working on heights and I'm busy enough, it has little impact on me, but not so much when I'm standing around.
Becoming an on call firefighter, is this an opportunity to become a whole time firefighter? Roughly how long would I have to be on call whilst applying for whole time?
You can apply for whole time without even being on call. On call does not mean you are guaranteed to get a whole time position. It does help though as you still under Gina lot of training, will get hands on practical knowledge and learn things from drill nights. Ultimately you still go the jobs that whole time fire fighters attend and do the same things too
@@stevengetsfit Ah right ok thankyou, whole time fireman is a dream job, I understand applying doesn't gurentee a job as they have so many applicants. Any advice or things to consider that might help getting a place?
I think going on call is a great thing to do while waiting to become whole time anyway. You experience so much and effectively you’re only needed in emergency situations so it can fit in with your normal life/job and means you get out doing exciting jobs
So just a small comment, you are doing a 20 metre bleep test, the police is 15 metre and required as basic level to achieve 5.3. This is based on public to be able to achieve level 5 and thus police a slightly higher standard. Also the police have increased bleep tests up 10.2 officially and unofficially higher. Additional test including, lifting and rope hanging. Also note this is the minimum level to achieve and for many specialist units, this is the start of the day and trust me……more follows all day long.
@@stevengetsfit I believe that there are two tests, 15m, and 20m. Which is based more so on how much room there is at the test centre. The timing is also adjusted for each. 15m would seem slightly harder, as you'd be turning more often. It's been nearly 20 years since I last did a bleep test, but if i remember rightly that level 5.3 was a fast walking pace, and in my opinion, not really a good indication of someone's overall fitness, more a case of they're really unfit, or they're very average. Here's a list that I found. Specialist Roles If you are in a specialist role then you will need to complete the bleep test to a higher level. The list below details what these roles are and what level you will be expected to meet. Regular Police Officer: 5.4 PCSO: 5.4 Detention Officer: 5.4 Detective Constable: 5.4 Special Constable: 5.4 CBRN: 5.4 Method of Entry: 5.4 Dog Handler: 5.7 Level 2 Officers: 6.3 Firearms Support Unit: 9.4 Armed Response Vehicle: 9.4 Specialist Firearms Officer: 10.5
Hi Steven, i will be taking the online behavioral styles and situational judgement assessments coming up in December, this will be my third attempt and i have purchased a book on the situational judgment test and also an online behavioral styles practice quesquestionnaire, is there any advice in your opinion what could also help, thanks 👍
Hi, this isn’t something I recall doing so I wouldn’t be able to give you any advice I’m afraid. It sounds like a you’re putting the preparation in though! You could always go to your local station and see if they could help you out. Best of luck 🤞🏼
You only get one attempt on the day, if you fail something you fail the whole thing. You then have to re book to do another test on another day. How many chances you get in total I’m not sure

In my country the fitness test is simply run 3 KM within 13,35 mins , do 60 pushups in 1 minute and 60 crunches in a min.. but to pass the push-ups and crunches you just have to do 40 for both and stop you dont have to go all the way up to 60 ..
That’s pretty impressive, are you in the fire service?
Just out of curiosity how many girls do you have in your fireservice

Do you mean the "military press?" I do that! it's a really difficult exercise but i forgot to say, i can (is it called "overhead press?")
do 22KG on military press.
also for the 33kg barbell carry and walk, i just realised that you don't actually curl it as if you're doing barbell curls, you just carry it and walk! for some reason i was worried that they would ask me to barbell curl that weight but you just hold it with straight arms and walk haha.
in terms of 500m on rowing machine every day, i hope thats enough.
i looked at the website and they said nothing about bleep test, maybe times have changed and it's not there anymore.
Yeah! Silly me, I don't know what came over me for them to ask me to barbell curl 33KG is very heavy don't think the average person can do that lol
that's interesting, I'll look them up and I need to practice a bleep test to see what score i can get, although it doesn't say anything about that in their website at www.london-fire.gov.uk/careers/become-a-firefighter/fitness-tests/
maybe it's different for London, but thanks still, this is VERY useful information and I will try to get my fitness even better.

Physically I didn’t struggle, just wasn’t sloppy on manual dexterity. Didn’t have any issues second time I did the test

How do u get rid of the fear on the ladder test and how did u let go of both hands ?thanks

It’s 100% on my plan of things to do, I’ve just been super busy since lockdown ended. What sort of stuff would you like to see?
@@stevengetsfit not sure really, maybe the pump or even more things about the fire service, the training and application process!
I’ll see what I can do!
What audio did they use for the bleep test on the assessment day? Do you have a link? thanks
ua-cam.com/video/sP8tvsjR2dQ/v-deo.html
Excellent information about this ,a great job that saves lives. Love the video! How many hours do you guys work per week and if somene faisl the trial can he redo it ?
Thank you Ahmad! I’m on call 90 hours a week, this can vary but 90 hours is the expectation. If you fail you can do it again 👍🏼
@@stevengetsfit wow 90 hours even for the starting ?
Yeah that’s how long I’m on call for.
Know its abit late, just one question are pull ups and push up included in the fitness test at any point? Cheers
Hi Joe, no they weren’t included when I did my test. Not sure if this has changed since but I doubt it
Hi mate, great video and I just have a question, if you fail one thing like you did can you redo it in the same process (same year) or do you have to wait until the application process comes round again?
Thanks, glad you liked it mate! When I failed I had another test with a couple of months. It might be different for whole time though. You might need to wait for application dates
I wanna know about all of it as thinking about joining 🤔
What would you like to know?
I was lucky enough to know someone which meant I went down and learned a lot about he process at the time
@stevengetsfit782 I actually do, I've just not been in touch with him for a couple years. I could try reach out to him and hope from there haha
6:36 what make sure there's no doubt i'll fail it ??? Im so confused rn
Basically I meant to say no doubt I was pass, mess up but wasn’t going to re film. Well spotted though 👍🏼
Yo mate I'm thinking of joining devon and somerset as a full time fireman do you know when they take intakes into training?
I’m sorry mate I don’t, I’d check online on the recruitment part of their website, or try their social media. If not you can always go down to the station and ask face to face. Good luck!
Can you talk more about the online application you must complete thank you
When I applied I had to fill in an online matrix which was my on call availability (there is a minimum of 90 hours a week when I applied). It was there basic details about myself and from there I had an interview with the watch manager and a further interview as part of the recruitment process
It kills me that the standpipe isnt fixed in properly lol
Good spot 😂
Do you have to be a certain height?
No, not that I know of. The fire engines can be lowered so that it’s easier for shorter people to get the ladder off the top
@@stevengetsfit will they allow me to join the fire brigade if I have asthma
What was the first thing you did ,did you go college? Did you register your interest online?
I applied online and went to my local station to speak with them
Interesting video!
Thanks!
What if I have a red/green deficiency colorblindness im disqualified of being a successful firefighter?
That’s a good question, I’ll be honest I’m not too sure. I would check with your local station/recruitment team. I did have a medical which included an eye test but I don’t know about red/green deficiency colourblindness
If you been in the army infantry you will find all the tests easy. Believe me passed it all 👍
Best of luck to all who are going for it
Well done 👏🏼
hey with the training do you go away to a place like in there army or do you travel to the training place daily ?
We just went to a training place daily. It was at two different locations and we were there for 2 weeks 9-5 and then either 12 weeks after doing an evening course a week or 6 week of whole weekend
@@stevengetsfit I have done the expression for and have a taster day in a week any tips or advice on what to ask and do on this day?
Do you think being in the army reserve would be beneficial to my application for the fire service?
It might do Liam, there was someone on my course who was a reserve and he was great! Whether that’s a direct link I’m not sure, but I would imagine it helps
Thanks! I can't get a job just yet, but I know what I will be when I can!
By the way, how many chances do you get to finish something I would
expect 2!
Well it took me 2 so I know you have at least that, it’s not on the same day though. So if you fail you need to arrange another day
What was the piece of equipment you had to assemble ?
Unlike the fitness test in the usa the one your doing your actually doing stuff that your going to do on a fire ground
Oh really? What’s the USA test like?
I want to become a firefighter. But what were ur first steps in becoming one
I had to start an application process and have interviews and medical etc. You should go for it!
Hi great video
I’m looking into applying for Devon and Somerset fire and rescue, my question is if you fail any of the tests can you re take and if you can how soon ?
Hey! Thanks for the comment and good luck with your application. Well I failed this fitness test and did it again in a month or so, not sure if there is a limit on amount of fails for things though
@@stevengetsfit thanks that makes me feel a bit better about the whole process
Good luck with it all, just be confident and do the best you can 🤞🏼
How many months, or years did it take you to go through the recruitment process?
It was around 2/3 months worth of recruitment process from start to finish from application sent in to starting training. This includes things like interviews, medical, uniform fit etc
Glad your stuck to it and finally passed. What's an average week like for a firefighter?
You*
Thank you Ras! Possible future video 👀
SR I live in Pakistan am doing job in Punjab emergency service Rescue 1122 as a firefighter
How long did you have to wait before taking the test again the 2nd time around?
I tried to do it as soon as possible, so as soon as they could book me back on a course which I think was around a month
Hi Steven
Sorry just to clarify did you not have to start the whole recruitment process again? Or you just came back for the fitness tests.
Hye there
Loved your video.
I have a question.
I am from India🇮🇳
I just completed my firefighter training course here.
Thank you 😊🙏
You need to be eligible to work in the UK before you can apply to be a firefighter here.
I want to be a firefighter as soon as I finish school next year inbetween the time before I go to the Royal Marines. Is it okay if I became a firefighter at 18 and then applied for the royal Marines at 21?
Yeah I can’t see any problems with that, would be an amazing achievement. Good luck!
@@stevengetsfit Cheers mate, good to hear it from someone who knows what they're talking about.
@@ht-ve9fe
Hey man I think its a great idea, my gym instructor was in the Royal Marines, when he retired from the Marines he joined the fireservice. Haha.
My friend is trying to get into the Royal Marines too and I'm trying to join the fireservice.
So in a wired way the Fireservice and the Royal Marines a kind of connected for some reason.
@@studentaviator3756 Thanks for letting me know. Yes I agree, I think they both attract people with similar goals and achievments in mind. I always think it's strange going from learning to save lives to learning to end them.
Hi do you have any tips for the English and maths tests you have to pass?
Hi Dom, I’m sorry but I didn’t have to do the English and maths tests as my school grades were recent enough to count as a pass
@@stevengetsfit Yep I recently had my taster day and got told the same by some firefighters, I was told you just have to pass the acceptable threshold within your two year "apprenticeship" I can start my application in two weeks! Any advice? & thanks for the reply.
I was looking at london fire brigade test but they did not put a bleep test does that mean there isn’t one ?
I’m not too sure, I would guess not if it’s not on the website
No bleep test (as it stands, but can change dependent on the time of recruitmemt). I believe that it's just equipment carry. But I'd be inclined to train for both, as in do loads of running. Looking to get fit enough to pass a test is good, but the fitter that you are and can easily pass any physical test will put you in good sted for the future, and will make the training and your potential career a lot easier.
P.s, I believe that they'll be opening up training again soon, but concentrating firstly on those who previously applied, but are still waiting to start.
What fire service do you work for? That would be nice to know!
Essex
Hi Steve, really interested in becoming a fireghter. How would I go about applying and what is ones chances?
Hi, thanks for commenting. You could go down to your local station to ask them about the recruitment process or apply online. These would be the best options. Good luck
Hi mate, my current local fire service aren't hiring at the minute. However have you got any ideas of how I can put myself in a good position to be selected once they do start hiring again, other than the fitness side of things? Is there anything they look out for on a CV etc?
Thanks mate. Loved the vid
Hi Danny, I’m glad to hear you liked the video. Is this for a whole time or on call position you were going for?
@@stevengetsfit I am wanting to go for the whole time position! Just wondered if there is anything they look out for in ideal candidates. Trying to give myself the best opportunity when hiring comes around again
Well it might be worth you seeing if there are any on-call positions at your local station if you live within 5 mins from it. Other then that any kind of first aid courses you could take maybe or seeing if you can visit your local station and speak to some of the team to show your interest. Whole time is a really difficult process as very few jobs come up and so many people apply! Good luck with it all mate, just be patient
I have my physical tests tomorrow. Absolutely bricking it -.-
SR am doing job in fire department in 13years
What's the point of removing your hands from the ladder and looking down to identify an object? I mean how does this apply in a real firefighting situation?
Also in a real situation is there a firefighter at the bottom holding the ladder?
If you need to use a hose or other equipment while on the ladder you need your hands. Performing a leg lock means you can safely use your hands for things like that.
You would do to start yes, you always ask someone to foot the ladder
@@stevengetsfit Thank you bro.
No worries man
Because you might have to fight the fire from the top of a ladder and will have to perform the leg lock in order to keep your hands free to hold the hose.
Yes it is against protocol to go up a ladder without it being "footed" and you would be a brave idiot to do so.
In Pueblo they use to make you carry 120 lb dummy
Wow that’s heavy, how far would you need to carry it for?
What type of qualifications do u need?
In the UK a pass grade at GCSE maths and English I think is all what’s needed to start the process
Always been my dream job but I’m shit scared of heights 🤦♂️ lol
Ah man that’s tough. Obviously we do a lot of working at heights for training but in reality most jobs I’ve been to haven’t even needed ladders!
Funny how the Fire service running test is closer to the Royal Airforce Standards than the bloody police XD
Tell me about it 😂
Becoming an on call firefighter, is this an opportunity to become a whole time firefighter?
Pleased to hear they go higher now. Wouldn’t a 20 meter bleep test be more difficult as it’s another 5 meters distance to cover over that time?
@@stevengetsfit I believe that there are two tests, 15m, and 20m. Which is based more so on how much room there is at the test centre. The timing is also adjusted for each. 15m would seem slightly harder, as you'd be turning more often. It's been nearly 20 years since I last did a bleep test, but if i remember rightly that level 5.3 was a fast walking pace, and in my opinion, not really a good indication of someone's overall fitness, more a case of they're really unfit, or they're very average.
Here's a list that I found.
Specialist Roles
If you are in a specialist role then you will need to complete the bleep test to a higher level. The list below details what these roles are and what level you will be expected to meet.
Regular Police Officer: 5.4
PCSO: 5.4
Detention Officer: 5.4
Detective Constable: 5.4
Special Constable: 5.4
CBRN: 5.4
Method of Entry: 5.4
Dog Handler: 5.7
Level 2 Officers: 6.3
Firearms Support Unit: 9.4
Armed Response Vehicle: 9.4
Specialist Firearms Officer: 10.5
Hi Steven, i will be taking the online behavioral styles and situational judgement assessments coming up in December, this will be my third attempt and i have purchased a book on the situational judgment test and also an online behavioral styles practice quesquestionnaire, is there any advice in your opinion what could also help, thanks 👍
Hi, this isn’t something I recall doing so I wouldn’t be able to give you any advice I’m afraid. It sounds like a you’re putting the preparation in though! You could always go to your local station and see if they could help you out. Best of luck 🤞🏼
How many attempts do you have to complete the tests?
You only get one attempt on the day, if you fail something you fail the whole thing. You then have to re book to do another test on another day. How many chances you get in total I’m not sure
