  • Alex, James and Mike look back on the World Cup Final in front of a packed live audience in Yokohama to discuss just how South Africa beat England so convincingly, pay tribute to Rassie Erasmus and his team, and ask what Eddie Jones needs to do to moving forward.
    Plus they discuss why they don't know the difference between a loose head and a tight head, and Elton John makes an appearance.

      It find it utterly confusing why Boks don't try to get Kolbe the ball far, far more. Bring him in off the wing, at least a few times a game. He is so good that in any space at the least he will attract a ton of attention and open things up. If I were boks I would run him at 1st receiver 3-4 times a game.

    I was pretty pissed off at how they dismissed SA's chances in the pre final show, but full credit to them for being humble in defeat and appreciating the bigger picture. England still did extremely well this RWC and have a bright future. The challenge for SA is to try stay at No 1 and build on the unifying effect this win has had in SA.

    • @as680783

      An English ITV game commentator said something very memorable at the end of the game, "England went to the RWC to *beat* the best in the world but the Bokke went to the RWC to *be* the best in the world". As for being humble? I think we all probably took from the example given by the magnanimous respect the All-Blacks showed in defeat in last week's semi-final. The great thing about England's future is that Eddie J is staying on and most of the players are in their early 20's, so plenty of time to develop and build.
      Congrats on the fabulous win and I look forward to further encounters between us in the future. Enjoy your win!

      Can anyone explain to me why Northern Hemisphere teams in particular feel it's better to try and go through an opposing defender when on the 5 metre line rather than use a well timed, well placed grubber, chip or crossfield kick to go around or over instead? The tactic of trying to go through an opponent is both very wasteful with time and very rarely results in a try. In Super Rugby in particular teams are far more willing to try something different for example the Hurricanes use the 'wipers' kick to really good effect and, when Dan Carter was at the Crusaders they (Crusaders) used the tactic when Nemani Nadolo was the winger. Just a thought I had from watching Northern Hemisphere rugby.

      @@JP1234815 I could not understand why we never used a kick to break through the SA defensive line. We did lots of other pointless kicks that immediately gave possession back to the Boks, so they could yet again exploit our inability under the high ball and keep us under pressure.

      They're still doing the same old rubbish where they see England play a couple of great games and start talking about world domination. It is a hugely talented group of players that England have and they were made to look ordinary because they didn't know what to do when their A game didn't work because they are nowhere near there yet. Wales took SA to the 70 minutes before they looked lost, England looked lost before the half hour and falsely talking this side up about world domination does them no favours. These pundits have a vested interest in not criticisng the national team due to the sychophantic relationship between pundits and the England players, being open and honest in not an option for these guys. Same as the shit storm at Sarries. Every pundit is ripping into Nigel Wray and making out that the players were poor little victims. Embarrassing

      @fiveowaf454 4 роки тому +2

      Had England resorted to the same so called "boring rugby" I believe they could have won. On the two notable occasions they used the forwards to keep running at South Africa, successfully recycling the ball over and over, despite the incredible defense of SA, they did keep moving forward little by little and points of some sort were inevitable from a try or a penalty that would inevitably come. However despite that obvious success, they felt resorting to attempting to throw the ball, kicking it etc. around was somehow going to work on a day when it was obvious that under pressure they were just to tense and nervous to pass or effectively and to catch the ball. IMO SA beat a considerably better team by sticking to the basics and doing them well, while England floundered.

      South Africa’s school rugby is on a completely different level to other countries, even New Zealand.
      We have 25-30 super schools that could beat the best rugby schools in the UK hands down. Christchurch boys, the school that produced over 50 All Blacks, got hammered by 50 and 60 when they came over here.
      The problem is, the quota system is still well and truly active at school level, and that is affecting a lot of very talented youngsters who either give up on the sport or go overseas. Look at Duhan van der Merwe ripping it up in the pro 14, Stander and multiple other Saffers already playing for other countries.
      We need to find that balance of giving the opportunity to black players without forcing the hand(with quota system). Get academies going in the rural areas, so we can spot the talented young ones and get them at the super schools with scholarships. Then we can still enforce the transformation without taking away the opportunities of talented white kids.

      @@brolint8067 Brolin T I disagree. The amount of untapped talent the 40 million+ black south africans is almost immeasurable and we HAVE to tap into that talent. Quota systems should not be used at the top level of rugby but I have no issues with this being implemented at a grass roots level as it is the only way which allows the required time to build up black rugby players with the skills and experience they need.
      And one you have a good representation of players in the national team who are then entirely on merit, it inspires more young black boys to play rugby thus increasing out talent pool exponentially.
      Stander and Van der Merwe are also not victims of any quota system. There were just other players who are better than them. Is Stander better than PSDT, Vermeulen, Kolisi or Flou? Or even Whitely (before his injury). Is Van de Merwe better than Kolbe, Mapimpi, Sbu Nkosi or Willie Le Roux on the wing? And before his doping charge, Dyantyi was arguably one of the best wingers in the world as well so there were at least 5 ahead of him. Sorry but they just weren't good enough.

    Huge respect for Eddie Jones. Remember he helped to coach the Boks once upon a time. No excuses or blame from him. Took it on the chin as a true champion. Also huge respect to the England squad. You played a game against the Boks that was out of this world. As a South African, my respect to you. Remember, the Boks knew that you will be coming out strong and they had to prepare for that Physically and mentally. Remember Rassie's words, how he managed the time on field (minutes) of the forwards. That was crucial. So nothing to be ashamed of England! You got your revenge against us in 2021.

    • @fiveowaf454

      @@eddy4688 Absolutely spot on, I've seen England crumble in enough crunch games that I too spotted the signs and knew we would lose even before Sinkler got KO'd I could see all the signs of tension in their inability to pass etc. as soon as the kick off took place and have never seen the England team turn that around once they start playing that way. Not diminishing SA's performance, but I think many are talking that up as an excuse for England's poor performance. While I didn't see any lack of commitment, or effort from England's players the application of it all was just poor and players that we'd been excited about all World cup for their skills and performance just didn't show us anything. I suspect that like me they also started to feel they were going to lose after 2 minutes of the game and their performance reflected it. The only bright spots of success were the two occasions when they kept the ball in the forwards and drove forward recycling the ball over and over and were very successful almost scoring and having SA giving away penalties and really under pressure, but instead of realising that was the way to win on the day, they went back to trying to throw the ball around when it was already proven that there passing and catching was very poor under the pressure of the occasion and resorted to too many box kicks etc. giving possession back to SA and immediately coming under pressure again.

      @@fiveowaf454 Yep, It was all too similar to those many Grand Slam deciders that we didn't turn up in, we were lucky to still be in it at half time but you just knew they wouldn't come out turn it around, just like those GS deciders, bar the odd exception it goes to shit when the pressure is really on, even in 2003 we genuinely were the best team & still very nearly blew it.

    • @fiveowaf454
      @fiveowaf454 4 роки тому

      @@eddy4688 I harbored a brief hope that after half time we might have been able to do something still, if we'd come out and played differently, but it was immediately evident it was more of same, other than some shoring up of the set pieces. We needed a change in tactics, a switch to a simple style of play keeping the ball in the forwards, to avoid our inconsistent passing and catching of passes and stop kicking the ball constantly back to SA, basically put pressure on SA as we did on the couple of notable attacking movements we had where the forwards kept running and despite SA's monumental defense we did move forward and they were under pressure and England weren't, other than to score, at those points you could see England's spirits lift and the balance of energy shift briefly. We had the upper hand in those phases because we kept possession and ultimately no team can keep defending against that indefinitely, it's incredibly tiring for the defenders and the resistance inevitably gets less as the game progresses and points get on the board through tries or the penalties that occur from desperate defense.

    The omissions of Alex Goode and Ben Spencer were glaring in that world cup final. Granted the scrum getting decimated was pivotal, but both Youngs and Daly were severely exposed under this level of scrutiny.
    This game and a World Cup in general suited the playing style and kicking execution of Spencer, and you simply can't argue that leaving out Goode was the right decision. A country mile the best fullback in the country and even Europe for that matter, how does selecting McConnochie and Cokanasiga and not even considering them for selection a good idea?
    There were multiple areas England got it wrong on the weekend, and incredibly right in the semi final, but Spencer and Goode were definitely a mistake at this World Cup. Another pivotal factor was our unfortunate arrogance being our undoing. Tactically and from a selection standpoint we got it right against the All Blacks. We didn't respect the Springboks strengths however, and thought that we would overcome them.George Kruis and Joe Marler were essential starters and Tuilagi at 12 to counterattack de Allende in the 12 channel also essential. This was a game Farrell HAD to start at 10. But anyways, incredible effort from the coaching staff but unfortunately it's what could of been.

The build up to the NZ game was more draining than anticipated and its a pitty they peaked one game to early. As for the final itself, they defnitly tried to play wide too early before establishing good front foot ball.
