    @0:30 - The last 32-bit-only x86 was released in 2002. Who's rocking some 18 year old hardware?

    • @joesalyers
      @joesalyers  4 роки тому

      So I agree 32 bit is almost pointless. But some people use the 32 bit version so they can run older plugins and open older 32bit only projects but I agree I think it's a waste of time to use 32 bit when there is so much more resources available in a 64bit DAW!

      It won't work on a Chromebook running ChromeOS since Linux is running in a Virtual Machine, you would need to install a full blown Linux Distro on your machine. I wish I knew of a workaround but I don't.

    I am running the Reaper Program directly out of the Reaper folder, it's executable by default. What are the benefits of installing other than Desktop integration?

    • @joesalyers
      @joesalyers  2 роки тому +1

      Some distros need it to be installed and others don't it just depends on the distro you are using. But having it installed directly could speed up plugin scanning on some distros. Also some people had asked me to show how to install Reaper on Linux so that is why I did it this way. I was following the install process from the Reaper website, but if it is directly executable from the folder on your distro that is good information to know. Dear Music Factory Studios,
    Thanks for your answer!
    I've run the installer bash script, and it worked perfectly. No libgdk installation was needed.
    My Linux version is "Linux Mint 18.1 Serena", because this system was used at my corporation about 2-3 years ago, and a distro-update would be very risky because the custom developed softwares, that it runs.
    So, NOW I verified, that Reaper can run on old system versions. Not only on Windows, but on Linux too!!! =D
    And... it's mind blowing, that it has even an ARM build. An >hiper-professional music DAW< has an ARM build!

LADSPA and LV2 plugins work with almost any Linux DAW such as Ardour & Mixbus and there is a Native Linux VST option out their as well. Windows vsts don't work naively. You can use linvst, ariwave or carla to get them to work. Might have a few issues though but from my experience, most vsts work fine. Just make sure to get the free trial of a vst before buying it to make sure it works.

      What distro are you using? This can happen if you downloaded the wrong version of reaper sometimes. If you have a 64 bit CPU and downloaded the 32 bit version or vice-versa. Double check your download first if it is the right one, then delete the unzipped file and re-unzip again sometimes the extraction/zip app can cause an error.

I'm not sure if Linux Mint offers a Real Time Kernel in their update application but there are plenty of tutorials on how to compile your Kernel for Ubuntu based distros (Mint is based on Ubuntu). This should solve the issue. A real time Kernel will allow jack to run without NON-real time X-runs which is where your issue is coming from, most likely. I would try to install a RT Kernel.

      Thanks! I'm a huge fan of Reaper and I am learning my way around Linux for Audio and I will hopefully get time to do more videos on recording with Linux and Reaper. I have used Apple's Mac's for nearly 25 years in our studio and I was just curious to see a Linux version of Reaper so I bought a new Laptop and deleted Windows, ( I haven't used Windows since version 2000 and I never will). I installed Linux Mint and another Distro Called Deepin OS on a dual boot setup just to keep up with the changing technology. Linux isn't ready to be the main machine in a commercial studio right now but if someone wanted to have a nice FREE recording rig on an old PC or Laptop Linux along with "Jack" is an option. The only issue is setup is complicated and if you are uncomfortable using the terminal it will be a long time before Linux is an option but if a person is willing to learn and do a LOT of forum and Manual reading then Linux could be a great option for budget minded musicians. It's just not as easy as Mac OS or even Windows but it can be done with time and patience. Have a great day and thanks for watching!
