My dad once pulled his truck over and threatened to not drive another inch until my best friend and I stopped repeating “97x…BAAAM…the future of rock n roll!” 😂 We were about 13/14. I forgot all about that until I saw people start reacting to this.
That scene between the Doctor and Raymond starting at 36:47 was really getting to me. I am 52 years old and have also dealt with the challenges for all my life. Those Psychiatrists sure know how to get on their high High horses when the Patient is at a vulnerable moment. I have had too many moments like that and yes, I have been told I'll never be capable of holding down a job, having a relationship, nor achieving residential independence. In other words, I will NEVER amount to anything according to them, as well as my family members. Wow, that's pretty motivating. Raymond has incredible talent I can only dream of. Raymond is a kind soul. Charlie was not a bad person at all, though he started off rude, aggressive, too impatient, and selfish in the beginning. He just did not have understanding of his brother Ray, until he learned more about him.
1. Hoffman really did fart in the phonebooth. Being professionals they worked through it in character. 2. The casino would have swapped out the dealer before taking the step of kicking them out. 3. The hooker was just working and it's doubtful she turned them in. 4. I suspect Charlie has a bit of his "piece of work" father has just as Raymond got the completely different personalities. (mentally/emotionally)
Love this film. Cruise and Hoffman are excellent. Not many people have met someone with autism, particularly one with savant abilities, but many millions of people have met Rain Man. ❤️
Not to defend Charlie's character at all, as he is quite deplorable throughout much of the film (yet still a charming person)...back in the 80s the general public knew essentially nothing about autism. I was a teenager when this came out, and it was my very first introduction to the word autism. This film did an amazing job of bring autism to the public as something that affects people, and their loved ones. Charlie's story arc is THE primary story in this movie. It's all about becoming a more understanding and more compassionate person to things he doesn't understand. It's truly a brilliant film with brilliant performances by Hoffman and Cruise.
I have 3 adult sons on the Autism Spectrum. They all differ in how they process information and how they interact with the world. Only one of them has the ability to remember dates and numbers in a superhuman fashion, and he's the one that displays the most visible autistic traits. He likes to study Google Maps, and can pretty much tell you exactly where you are from memory, even if it's somewhere he's never been to before. Anything he takes an interest in, he'll absorb as much information about it as he can find. He quite often talks about seemingly random topics where he'll just purge all the information he has onto any unsuspecting listener, switching topics as soon as he's depleted all of his knowledge about the previous one. None of my boys were institutionalised. My older brother on the other hand went into a home for the mentally retarded, as was the common phrase used by the medical profession when he was a boy. The nurses always said he didn't belong there. He was just very quiet and reserved and heavily bullied at school. He's recently just retired from a job he's held since the 1980s as a specialist lathe operator, and has just finished paying off his house. He might still be very quiet and reserved, but he's also very intelligent and capable of looking after himself.
Wow I love your story and it sounds like you have a wonderful family :) I’m happy to hear of your sons’ and brother’s successes despite undoubtedly facing challenges that others might not have to! Thanks so much for sharing this with me :)
There's nothing "wrong" with counting cards; it's a completely legitimate way to play the game. It's not illegal or even against the rules. But, like any business, a casino has the right to refuse service and remove anyone from the premises for any reason. And since you're in their house, you play by their rules...and it's against the house rules at every casino simply because it is such a strong strategy. And they don't have to prove that you're actually doing it; they can make you leave just by suspecting it...again, because any business can remove anyone from their premises for any reason.
So what Ray does counting cards is rare. Usually 'card counting' involves keeping track of the relative numbers of low and high cards. If there are more high cards, it is good for the player, because the dealer is likely to bust. The trick is to observe and count without giving away you are doing it, keeping a natural conversation going. You also have to vary your bets according to the count. When I was teaching college math, my students would ask about it, and I would tell them the principle above. There is a good movie about the MIT blackjack team loosely based on real events: '21'.
The doctor with glasses towards the end is Barry Levinson, the director of the film. He’s also the dad of Sam Levinson, creator of the hit HBOMAX series EUPHORIA. Talent runs in the family.
One of my favorite movies & I love that Raymond knew who he was from the beginning but couldn't Express it in the traditional way most of us could but eventually was able to.

I actually saw this in the theater when I was in high school and have loved it every since. It's odd to say, given the number of awards it won, but it's a bit of an underappreciated film these days. Another great post, Tara. Cheers from Florida.

Thanks, Tara, great reaction. Must admit I'd never noticed before but superlative actors that they are Hoffman and Cruise use similar cadences in their speech. Of course they do, they're brothers.

I hear you about Charlie experiencing grief, but I disagree about it “never being about the money” During the scene in the diner, Charlie is on the phone with the doctor. He tells the doctor “you want him back? That’ll be 1.5 million”. He also says if he doesn’t get paid he will just stick Ray in some institution in LA and leave him there… For me, this was all I needed in order to form an opinion about Charlie’s core character, grieving or not. I do think it was about the money for him, as well as about feeling like he deserved half of the inheritance (even though I don’t agree he deserved anything at all after abandoning his father and never looking back). I will say that Tom Cruise gave an incredible performance in this film! He played Charlie perfectly, but I do think that Charlie, the character, was definitely an a-hole at the start of this movie!

Hi Tara. I'm just wondering if you knew what song Cruise and Hoffman were singing in the bathroom. It was "I Saw Her Standing There", which was a huge hit for The Beatles back in 1964.
This movie is so touching. And honestly, after so many comments for the scavenger hunt, I'm having a hard time coming up with meaningful stuff to say. Great reaction as always, though!

Seen this when it first came out on VHS when I was a young teen. It became one of my favorite movies. Tom Cruise plays many different type of roles. If you've only seen Jerry Maguire & Rainman, then it's just been your bad luck that you've seen 2 Cruise movies where both characters are similar lol. However, now that you've pointed it out, I think there are a few more that he plays a "dick" that gets a "heart" lol
@@TaraTunesIn also, to see Tom Cruise play a minor role (only a few scenes) that is unlike just about any Tom Cruise role ever, and a great comedy with Robert Downy Jr and Ben Stiller… *_Tropic Thunder_*
I watched a few of your videos last night and absolutely loved your reactions. I was really waiting for this one today and am currently paused at about 10 minutes. I understand what I'm about to say will make me sound like an a-hole even though it's not my intent. You don't need to talk over what's going on [dialog] to be entertaining. I believe people watch reactions to share a movie they like with somebody. We want to see people enjoy (or even hate) a movie, not narrate what's going on. We already know. We're not looking for talk about something that's sort of kind of related to what's happening on screen. I have watched a reactor not understand the relationship between 2 characters until the end of the movie because he talked over 3 separate instances that mentioned it. I've seen a couple try to one-up each other at guessing what would happen that they missed what WAS happening. I've seen your sister talk over major plot points. I rarely return to those people. [clarification: I've watched a lot of sis' vids and have only left the one time] I fully expect this comment to be hidden, and I won't blame you. But I will say again that I'm not typing this to be cruel. I'm typing it because I loved the reactions I watched last night.
I appreciate your input, and I honestly am not trying to talk over stuff just to be entertaining! I say whatever I’m thinking Because that’s what my genuine reaction is. I haven’t yet missed anything important while saying something, I am able to follow the plot despite saying things that I’m thinking. I’m glad to hear you e enjoyed most of my reactions! They aren’t all going to be everyone’s cup of tea! This is my style! And it generally works for people :) I could sit quietly and watch the whole movie without saying anything at all, but that’s not what this is about for me, and I am positive I would have about a hundred comments saying how I provided a boring or uneventful reaction. For me, my reactions aren’t about quietly watching the movie with you… it’s about showing you how the movie is making me feel as I’m feeling it, and yes, telling you what its making me think about, as I’m thinking it! That’s how I genuinely react to each moment. I hope you try my videos again, with the understanding that I am in no way trying to continuously talk over everything for some kind of entertainment value, I am just sharing my thoughts as I have them because that’s what showing you my reaction to a film is for me! Thanks for your honesty :)
@@TaraTunesIn I didn't mean to imply I was giving up, but I need to admit that the first 5 minutes of this video had me worried. Thank you for your understanding.

This is a great movie all around. Autism wasn't anywhere near the public consciousness when this came out. It existed and psychological professionals knew it well, but it wasn't something the general populous had even heard of. It is rather hard to explain due to its nature. People unfortunately also adopted the autism stereotype thanks to this movie. Not the film's fault, of course, as the onus is always on the audience to not take everything literally, but a sad side-effect nonetheless. Same thing happened with Tourette's when depicted in media. When I was growing up in the 80s/90s nobody knew what Tourette's Syndrome was. Then a few movies came out that joked about the rarest form of it, because someone randomly swearing is, admittedly, inherently a funny thing. But now to the public, it's the cussing syndrome and I still have to explain to people why my TS doesn't cause me to swear at random. Seems like we've been losing the ability to separate reality and fiction more and more over time.
That’s pretty sad to hear! I hope there are still enough of us out there who don’t take what we see in films as the only possible reality, and who take the time to learn more about things we aren’t familiar with before making assumptions..
Counting cards is not wrong. It's just that the accountants running the casinos don't like winners so, as is their prerogative, they toss out card counters, put them on a black list and make their blackjack life miserable if not impossible. ...At least in the U.S.A.
I suppose, but Charlie is the one who left/chose to end the relationship. I would think it would be on Charlie to come back/reconcile it. Either way, his father is allowed to leave his money to whomever he chooses, Charlie doesn’t have a right to his money just because he exists… He didn’t earn it by being a good son or even being present in his fathers life, by his own choice, regardless of who didn’t reach out to whom through the years. That’s my opinion anyway :)
@@TaraTunesIn I like your perspective. If Charlie left when he was a teen and his dad was older, the worry was that Charlie had to learn to be a man on his own without his dad trying. A hurt father can be tough but a lost son can be much worse, since the father has the maturity and clarity to see beyond feelings to what matters most. A child doesn't have that yet. So he holds to his bitterness because that's all he has. Pops had foundation, a sense of self worth, and the determination to teach a life lesson. If Charlie had that, l would definitely hold him solely accountable. The principle of teaching a child a lesson has to be put in perspective. His dad knew better from my perspective. I was fortunate to have my dad still. I'm listening. It would be rough without him.
Not to be a downer, but considering Tom Cruise is a Scientologist, and Scientologists view psychology and psychologists as the ultimate evil...it's pretty safe to assume that Cruise sees this as a story about evil psychologists breaking up a family.
That is a VERY subjective statement and mostly determined by the Table or Venue you are playing at. I have successfully counted cards a good number of times in a 6 deck shoe in the recent past.
@@havok6280 - It's cheating because the casino says so, and they can set their own rules in their own place. Using nothing more than brain power doesn't seem like cheating to me.
@@jowbloe3673 so if you're playing blackjack at home with your friends, you'd be ok with one of your friends counting cards? Would that be fun for you? Or another example. Say there's a football game. Would it be fair if one team had the other team's playbook? Or another example. Using just your brain, you can steal signs in baseball. That's also cheating. Blackjack existed long before casinos. Casinos didn't invent the rules. Card games like blackjack are meant to be games of strategy and chance. If one player knows what cards are coming, it defeats the purpose of the game.
In the 80s on the game show Press Your Luck, an unemployed ice cream truck driver watched the show so often, he memorized the patterns on the board. He ended up winning over $100,000. They accused him of cheating and didn’t want to give him the money. But it wasn’t cheating, just incredible skill. They randomized the pattern after that to prevent it from happening, but they did give him the money.
@@kenlangston3451 yeah, that's cheating, too. If you intentionally stack the deck in your favor, it defeats the purpose of the contest. In the Press Your Luck example, they had to give him the money because his actions weren't a violation of the rules as written.
Nah, not my style The easiest way to do a reaction is very honestly If I waited till the end of a scene I would have too much to say going in to the next scene. Better to say lots of little things so I don’t miss anything!
I completely understand.. I don't love putting them there either, unfortunately, it is a way to keep people engaged in the video so they don't just click off of it right away. It is a highly suggested thing to do to help increase people's interest right at the start. I appreciate your input though!

Tom Cruise “Protagonist but not a completely nice guy” recommendation: “The Firm” (1993)
This was my second choice after E.T.
Lol I agree!! They are really similar.. stressed out business man with short temper meets someone who turns him around!
[clarification: I've watched a lot of sis' vids and have only left the one time]
I fully expect this comment to be hidden, and I won't blame you. But I will say again that I'm not typing this to be cruel. I'm typing it because I loved the reactions I watched last night.
I appreciate your input, and I honestly am not trying to talk over stuff just to be entertaining!
I say whatever I’m thinking
Because that’s what my genuine reaction is.
I haven’t yet missed anything important while saying something, I am able to follow the plot despite saying things that I’m thinking. I’m glad to hear you e enjoyed most of my reactions! They aren’t all going to be everyone’s cup of tea! This is my style! And it generally works for people :)
I could sit quietly and watch the whole movie without saying anything at all, but that’s not what this is about for me, and I am positive I would have about a hundred comments saying how I provided a boring or uneventful reaction.
@@No1Knows of course!! I really appreciate the feedback actually! I know I said a ton of stuff about cars at the start hahah but I don’t actually talk the WHOLE time! I’m grateful to you for watching my videos and taking the time to let me know what you think!! :)
I love your videos and reactions. I've been watching your sister's reaction videos for some time, and I think I like yours best (shh... don't tell her though 😀)
Awww that’s very kind of you!!! It’ll be our secret 😂
Vern V.E.R.N lol. Love it.
A powerful film
Maybe my fav Tom Cruise film.
😄 Believe me, you don't want to be here in Los Angeles at this very moment. It was 100° all day, and now it's starting to rain hot water. Dustin Hoffman movies run the gamut from excellent to awful. I hope you eventually get around to watching "Tootsie," but avoid "Family Business," even though one of your sister's favorite actors is also in it (Sean Connery). It's extremely boring.
i like tom cruise in the movie , Legend
take my winnings and leave the state? ok, we’ll go to Biloxi and then Atlantic City and for 💩 and giggles we’ll get on sn ocean liner to hit Monte Carlo
@@TaraTunesIn I just think people tend to take fiction a bit too seriously. See any politician during election season. lol
One of my favorite movies of all time along with the Pink Panther 2006 and Blazing Saddles. Love this movie without a doubt.
Counting cards is not wrong. It's just that the accountants running the casinos don't like winners so, as is their prerogative, they toss out card counters, put them on a black list and make their blackjack life miserable if not impossible. ...At least in the U.S.A.
What efforts did thr father make to reach out? He was the one with the ability to get to his son. He isn't in the right for that
I suppose, but Charlie is the one who left/chose to end the relationship.
1933 original king Kong movie it's a classic movie better than the awful 2005 remake 😊
here's that Rich Hall bit about Tom Cruise movies are all the same...... ua-cam.com/video/v-tU2KIAMrs/v-deo.html
you didn’t count cards now. the cards go into a continuous shuffler after they’ve been played
That is a VERY subjective statement and mostly determined by the Table or Venue you are playing at. I have successfully counted cards a good number of times in a 6 deck shoe in the recent past.
You`re so beautiful🤩🤩🤩🤩
Aw ☺️☺️you’re too kind
@@TaraTunesIn He's right! :)
27:36 - Counting cards is wrong because the casino loses money, instead of the player, and that isn't allowed.
It's wrong because it's cheating...
Wow you talk a lot during a movie inwould.wait till the scene is over
Nah, not my style
The easiest way to do a reaction is very honestly
If I waited till the end of a scene I would have too much to say going in to the next scene. Better to say lots of little things so I don’t miss anything!
Don't like the clips of your video at the beginning of your video. Spoilers to your own video.
I completely understand.. I don't love putting them there either, unfortunately, it is a way to keep people engaged in the video so they don't just click off of it right away. It is a highly suggested thing to do to help increase people's interest right at the start. I appreciate your input though!
@@TaraTunesIn - I understand, you need to do what you need to do, but I'm here to watch a video of one of the reactors that I follow, so you already have my interest. Keep em coming.
