As a school employee, I am willing to do or give up whatever it takes to keep children safe. It is interesting, though, that this proliferation of food allergies has developed in the past ten years. I mean, there were always a few children who might have been allergic to eggs, strawberries, and milk, and strawberries were so lethal an allergen at our city schools back in the 70's and 80's that NO SCHOOL in Virginia Beach Public Schools dared serve them-now they grace student lunch trays several times per month. All the cafeterias in the 70's and early 80's in our system, served peanut-butter squares (similar to a large Reese's cup) at least once per week and NO ONE was allergic to peanuts then, that I recall. I think we need to take precautions in schools, but we also need to be equally aggressive about demanding answers from the medical community as to why the recent increase!? I must admit, I do miss the classroom parties with baked treats from parents' families and I will always stand by the fact that years ago, when we could teach "edible" lessons, they were the strongest and most-motivating lessons for the children I taught. Even today, I have students (who are now grown ups) come back and remark about how much they loved my density lesson with the angel and devil's food cake, how much they enjoyed making an edible cell or food chain, how exciting it was to simulate tectonic-plate movement with graham crackers and icing-but alas, those are the vestiges of a now bygone era and I do not see the medical establishment being held accountable for producing us any more answers than they had to offer when this rash of peanut allergies (especially, peanuts) began.
I almost have tears in my eyes. I had no idea this was going on! I have allergies to wheat and corn. The first reaction I can remember to corn was when I was 4. It wasn't that bad; just a stomachache. But when I began having diarrhea almost every day, I had an allergy test. I have big problems in school because now my allergy to corn is getting more severe and being around it makes my eyes swell a little bit. I definitely don't have super severe allergies, but they may develop into more severe allergies later- my mom has a severe dairy allergy she had since she was a baby and it hasn't left her. But as I said, I had no idea something like this was going on. I'm glad, too. I'm glad there's someone raising awareness of this growing problem. All I can say is thank you.
Excellent video, extremely informative. I am currently writing a project concerning children with food allergies in school, childhood obesity and juvenile diabetes which all revolves around food. This is a great paper starter. Thank you!
I am anaphylactic (highly allergic) to peanuts, cashews, sesame, and shellfish. I am allergic to melon, kiwis and bananas. I am lactose and soy intolerant... yea it’s pretty bad :(

Great! Too bad Adults aren't more informed & there aren't more personnel in Schools to implement these fine recommendations...

How can someone have more than one food allergy like peanuts and kiwi?
lots of people have more than one food allergy at once. It's actually quite common
