  • In north america (and i'm sure in other places in the world) we don't have a concept of an oral final exam really. Because of this, I failed my first one during my master's program at a german university (since I had no idea what it was). It seems like this is a common problem though (international students not know what the oral exam entails and then fails). Along the way I've picked up and developed some communication tips and strategies for these exams that has helped bring me to 1,0 or full marks for most of my oral exams, which I will share here today. Hope this helps you get full marks too (current/future uni students in germany who needs to take an oral exam). I focus on communication tips since there are already a lot of really good memorization videos for these exams on YT (albeit in german), but not that many for communication tips, which I believe is equally as important.
Disclaimer: I've only done oral exams online and also in english (nie auf Deutsch), but of the 6 oral exams i've taken so far for my program, i've gotten 4x 1,0 (top) marks; the other two were in the 1,0-2,0 range because I didn't finish memorizing the exam content. I'm not a coach in this or a pro, but as someone who has gone through it successfully, and seeing my fellow international students struggle/fear this type of exams, I wanted to note down my best tips here so y'all are in the know. I am assuming that these types of exams are similar in person (I guess we'll see, correct me if i'm wrong in the comments) and in german as well (at least I am praying it is).
