Greatest local radio presenter ever, and absolutely brilliant to work with. Miss the man terribly, the 6th anniversary of his death is coming up. RIP Cappo.
I'm really pleased this Utube thing has stimulated interest in Tony and I thank YOU ALL sincerely for your comments, I know he would be so chuffed being remembered and thought of so affectionately and in such hight regard, keep dropping by and i'll see what else I can come up with
Thanks Andy - i love Tony's songs... this is a gem. Im from Parson Cross but I live in Melbourne Australia these days and try and spread the good word about him. My group plays around the inner city rock scene and we usually open shows with an amped up metal version of sheffield grinder in tribute to Tony. The aussie kids are very receptive. Folk music is in peoples blood here.
Gosh yeh!!I remember them well, I'll see what I can dig out. 'Her father did'nt like me' was a Jerry Rafferty song which Tony taught me and I played it for a while. Cappo could always dig out unusual songs for his set, and had a unique way of interpreting them. 'Hello friends' was another one I loved to play, i think it was written by Harvey Andrews, and I still have the lyrics Tony scribbled down for me on the back of an envelope on the way to a gig in Luton - funny what you remember.
vicky you must be so proud to be the daughter of such a great man... i loved your dads humour..and the way he never had a bad word to say about anyone ... i saw him just before he passed away he had just visited the doctors in thorpe hesley... memories
I loved this guy, saw him many times live at Ashinton folk club when i was little. Does anyone know if his albums are available. What a talent. Man I love U Tube.
I saw Capstick many times in the late sixties and early seventies, he was always brilliant. I saw him at the SMG (?) in Manchester when Jenks banned him for being "over exhuberant". He is a loss to all.
Manchester Sports Guild, I remember seeing Martin Carthy at hyde Folk club one thursday and asking him how he was going to be in 2 places on Saturday? Booked with Steeleye at the LSE (London School of Economics ) and solo at the MSG? He called Jenks. Jenks got Tony to fill in. Capstick apologized about being there instead of Carthy and proceeded to do the best gig I ever saw him do . Just brilliant.
Thanks for these comments so far lads, the drinks are on me at 'Dixies'. 'Capstick comes home' was on You tube until not so long ago (?). It would be brill if any one out there has some stuff that could go on. Amazing bloke, cant let him be forgotten.
Thanks swho129 for your comment, I'm chuffed these recordings are sparking memories of Tony. Yes he did often make reference to Sir 'arthur' and indeed sir 'Geoffrey'! Tony was very astute about the world we live in and had a knack of putting a hundred words in a nutshell.
Hi Phil, thanks for your comments, I assume you have read the stuff I've put on re-Tony, I have had this strong urge to do something in his memeory for a long while. Apart from his albums, and yes I can get you a copy of this recording, there is very little to work with. I was very close to him at times and had an afternoon with him not long before he died playing guitar and banjo and the like. I've never felt so desolate as when I heard he'd left us. Cheers
I knew Tony very well and spent many happy hours with him in the Rock. I used to write and record skits for his radio show. I still miss him. Check out my Cappo tribute site. Lazlo
Hi Vickie do you know Al Senior? He has some of Your Dads early recordings I knew your Dad from the early 70s through the Folk Scene & always enjoyed his performances.
Hi Jon, good to hear from you, if you have anything of Tonys you think should be shared then please post it on your site. Thanks for dropping in, take care bud
