I've owned a 2006 Pitbull the last 4 years and I really enjoy it. I changed the EHC and the charging system, rotor, stator, and voltage regulator with no further problems. I always put the battery tender on the night before I'm going to ride. Your electrical componets will always work better with a fully charged battery.
You don't need to choke a Big Dog, all you have to do with a carb unit is crack the throttle two times and hit the start button and it will fire right up if someone hasn't screwed with the carb
I have a 2006 Mastiff that I put 41,000 miles on. Factory ECH still in there, same starter that I did have re-built by an Amish starter company at about 10,000 miles, I milled a slot in the starter so the primary oil runs out and back into the primary, no problems since. Always keep the bike on a trickle charger, replace the battery about every 2-3 years and the bike never has trouble starting unless it's below 30 degrees, I also put a 600 cam in mine, and it still starts just fine. I have broken 3 clutch cables, two broke at the lever end, the other at the actuator end, but with the back cut gears, I always rode home, one time over 50 miles. Oh, and using a GPS I had mine to about 150mph, would estimate that it would top out at about 170mph if you care to go there.
I have had nothing but problems with my 2006 Big Dog K9 which I bought brand new from Pat Clarke Motorcycles in Las Vegas, I have since dumped the EHC and completely rewired it and changed the decompressors to manual, I have also changed the speedo, controls and indicators and it now starts and runs well. I have got through 3 starter motors though! My K9 also rides great and handles great.
It seems to be a hit or miss with these beautiful machine. Either you have one with no issues and you love it, or you dump a ton of money in it, and ride the hell out of it.
Hey bro depends on the year you may have electric cylinder compression releases or manual ones. That motor should not be that hard to turn over when using them or if functioning properly if yours has manual ones just look up a vid they are easy to operate and save your starter
There is a lot of mis information in this video and some truth to it as well. Stock EHC(brain of the bike) had lots of problems. Desk top connectors, headlight plug made of plastic, sketchy backbone harness etc. DOC is the best replacement. Starters go bad! Nature of the beast in any motor vehicle. If everything is working properly in your bike...charging system, EHC, properly tuned these bikes are very reliable. As far as difficulty in riding I disagree. Been in the saddle 53 years and find this is as easy to ride as any bike I have owned. You do need to counter steer a bit more with a long fork bike...but my K9 is as stable and a blast to ride in the twisties...just have to know your limit. As for this video when the owner starts the bike and you see the tach ring flashing...that is a built in warning that the idle is set too low. These bikes want to idle @1100 rpms. With idle that low you are not getting enough oil to the top end...sounds good but not doing your motor any good. As well these are not High Compression motors. The 117 is an EPA motor. A stock 107 probably has more power than a stock 117. This bike is not properly tuned nor is the carb properly adjusted. He is correct about the speedos, and the only good replacement is a Dakota digital, which can be programmed to input original mileage. Some do it, some don't. So all in all there are some good points here but there is mis-information as well. Buyer beware as always!!
Change the EHC and this is the best value of motorcycle on the market. Never had a problem with five Big Dogs just need aftermarket EHC and fresh battery. This guy is the problem with social media these days and people need to learn to think for themselves.
Best thing about the big dogs, iron horse etc , were the drive trains. You can find some older ones thatve been flooded or ignored and get the motors pretty cheep. A rebuild and cam for usage and those motors make smooth power, from FXR to baggers. The early ones, 107s were some of the smoothest and no electronics.
I have an 05 ridgeback, did the Dead One Customs upgrade in about 2 1/2 hours. Never had a problem since. Cost me 700. I keep it on a tender over winter but don't need to during the warm weather. You must have a problem with yours. My original starter works perfectly every time. You probably do t have a high enough CCA. I can take turns easy with my 300 tire. You should get a cookie cutter bike.
I do have a "cookie cutter" bike. It's a 2014 Honda Valkyrie. One of the best bikes (in my opinion) on the market. No issues with it and can go over 300k miles before a rebuild. So much more reliable then the Mastiff. Cheers!
I have an 2006 bg k9< i put the ss anniversary cam in mine with a triple x carb mod and it will literally rip your hands off the handlebars. with the carb mod you have to run the original ss intake cover. you would swear its fuel infected.
I have an 03 chopper .. yes I’ve redone one the electronics and put a primo Rivera clutch on it .. they were shit built for sure and a pain in the ass .. but it’s fun
You have about 50 percent right they are nit hard to ride they corner damn good. I learned to ride on a 95 cbr900rr though the rear rims are heavy that's why it wants to stay up you have to mean it when you turn nit ride like a girl scout. There is a solution for the clutch I've never had an issue in stop and go traffic in sturgis get one of those grip trainers and go to work if your hand is weak
These Dogs are just fkn hotrods. Cool aint cheap and anyone with a brain can work on em. We ride em like dirtbikes. Hard, fast and wild. Hope you sold this one cause you dont seem to like them.
The clutch is tight so the bike don’t slip at full throttle, I have a bdl open primary 3 inch belt with 6 springs and it’s just as tight. If it’s not tight it’ll slip in the full throttle
It’s a rainy Saturday morning in my neck of the woods so I have nothing better to do than to comment on this video. Something I have wanted to do now for some time. I almost did not by my Big Dog after watching this vid and I’m glad I went ahead with my purchase. About a year ago I bought my 07 K9 117. It had about 3k miles. The author of this video is right about the EHC. I had to replace mine and I also replaced the entire charging system per the EHC sellers recommendation and to keep the warranty valid on the EHC. So if you are going to spend your last nickel on buying one of these older bikes..look elsewhere unless this job has been done. As far as the wiring is concerned I would disagree. It’s far from crap. The 300 rear tire and the 9’ length of the bike itself is not for beginners. If you have riding experience especially on heavy street bikes you will be fine with some practice. My friend purchased a 04 Chopper new and rode it for over 70, 000 miles without a major problem. When it comes to reliably The BD bikes stand up to the test. The S&S motors are very reliable and produce more horsepower and Touque than similar motors from Harley without extensive and expensive mods and if you have ever torn apart a Harley transmission snd set it along side a Baker or Jim’s you would be shocked just how much better these trannys are than Harleys. I could go on and on. By the way they are very comfortable to ride and no worries about a death wobble! Bottom line, BD bikes are not for everyone (and we like it that way) but if you want a great factory custom bike don’t be afraid of all the BD bullshit out there.
Thank you for your insight. I like the fuel injected Bulldog I had originally better then the current one. Like you said, you either love them or hate them. There are not for everyone.
bought mine new in 06 still have it and runs great. still have factory wiring and ehc in mine. vibration and chafe proofed wiring harness and installed c model ehc and no problems.
All you need is the German EHC, digital speedo, real good battery. The rest of his video is for suckers who believe anything they hear or wussies that can't ride like a man.
Get yojrself a new Harley. That way you won't be allowed to do anything but put gas in it and wax it due to the warranties.😂 I have a 2006 Bigdog ridgeback i have no issues wit it. A🎉 motorcycle no matter what make needs alot of maintenance. If you aint savey with a wrench stay with your Suv or your new Harley.
K9 with rider under 200lbs will get light at speed. 2 up 375 lbs total weight , flattens out lower and smooth easy 150 mph. Newer HD apparently is governed at 100mph, even the HD M8 is a slow.
Good info, I have the dead one customs ESC and have never had a problem since I installed it over 16,000 miles ago, but as far as the other things you mentioned the clutch you can fix with a ball and ramp kit from Barnes Performance Cycles, I never use a tender on my bike since I installed the ESC and a Yuasa heavy duty battery, very rarely If it sits for over a month will I have to put it on a tender, also I personally have not had an issue with my starter but I know a lot of people do, as far as the 300 mm tire, I run a Shinko and got mine for about $200.00 and I was able to install it myself so no extra cost there, Big Dogs are bad ass bikes but unless you have a lot of money to pay someone to work on it, or your like me and are able to do the work yourself I would not recommend buying one, they’re basically a hot rod that constantly needs attention, but even with all that being said, it’s the only bike I will ever ride!
Believe everything you hear much??? Five Big Dogs. I'll put them up against any Harley for durability, performance, and maintenance cost. German EHC can be had for $600, digital speedo for $300, good battery and you're going to be riding daily on the nicest, best value on the market.
Wow that’s my actual bike… 2006 Mastiff. I’ve spent loads of money trying to keep this thing running, I probably just don’t ride it enough. But yeah, lots of problems… Always.
Was on the fence for a 2007 K9 for $8,499 + 800.00 shipping. You just talked me out of it. Maybe I'll go with a Honda Fury. The Big Dog sounds like an absolute money pit and you'd spend more time screwing with it than riding it.
Your loss. Best value on the market. New German made aftermarket EHC, digital speedo, new beefy battery, and you'll have the best motorcycle around. But, you listened to this guy.
sorry but you missed several other important problems. the key will fall out wile riding, big problem when you get to where you're going and can't shut the bike off. If the clutch basket has not been replaced it will blow apart and leave you sitting. If the bike gets wet the starter switch will short out and start cranking the bike, if you leave the bike in gear it will knock it off the side stand. Yes, I am an original owner of a 2005 Big Dog, sold it after many times of being left sitting along the side of the road. the pain still hurts. ride on
I have a 2000 chopper & a 2004 ridgeback. Now mind you every custom bike I ever owned had it’s share of issue. But I think you are missing the mark by saying everyone who buys one of these will deal with these issues.
Does the difficulty in starting apply to the Big Dogs with the 107ci engine as well? Do the wiring issues apply to the 2003 and earlier models with the Harley style controls as well?
This is a great video. If the motorcycle was still available, I would be interested. I am interested in owning a big dog and your video is extremely helpful. Thank you for posting.
I have to disagree with your comment about the 300 rear tire. I had a chopper with a 300 rear tire, and once you get used to the way it corners, one can ride it as well as anyone can ride a Harley. It's also very stable ride. But yeah, the electronics on the Big Dog bikes can be quirky, and is best replaced.
Thanks for the excellent vid, bro. I just picked up a 2006 BD Pitbull with 1600 miles. It has the upgraded electrical and also has the new digital speedo. Matter of fact, when I bought the bike (yesterday), the speedo stopped working seconds after I bought it! So, the dealer, Dream Machines of Texas, replaced the speedo FOR FREE with the new digital speedo... Also, those guys told me all the pros and cons of the BD bikes. YOU ARE SPOT ON with your video!
Nice video, but about the wide rear tire you said that the bike is unstable, hard to ride, and doesn't corner very well. Also, at one point a Big Dog you had just wanted to go straight. Well yes, until one gets used to it, it does feel like it resists turning. However, I once owned a chopper with a 300mm rear tire, (and a Big Dog Chopper before that with the 250mm rear tire), and after a day of riding, I could ride it as well as any Harley cruiser. Proof to that is that a friend of mine owned a Harley Road King, and at one point after a trip down a very winding road, he said that he has to do everything he can to keep up with me. The low ground clearance was a bigger issue than the wide tire. As for stability too, it was very good, especially on the straight aways. Again, just need to get used to the cornering. But yeah, it's far from being a crotch rocket.
He's not very smart is he? Wider tire and physics should rule. Lean more than with a skinny tire. This is common social media, an idiot pots a video saying the motorcycle is too much for him and everyone believes his whining.
@@barrypayne3976 - Yes, and part of the reason I posted what I did was to properly educate people about bikes with wide tires, since his comments are way off base. I’ve had my current Bog Dog with the wide 300mm rear tire, and after putting one 10,000 miles on it, it has always been very stable.
Do newer ones around 2020 and up need this much work or no they are expensive and I don't want to get one the start replacing everything I like chopper style bikes but I need something I can count on to travel long distance on a fairly regular bases.
Honestly, I do not know. I have experience with the older models. I would have to assume by now they have fixed most if not all the well known issues they had.
This guy doesn't know what he's talking about. New German aftermarket EHC, digital speedo (if needed) and beefy battery. You would have had the best value on the market, BUT YOU LISTENED TO THIS GUY?
You really like the word garbage..know many people who own these and they never have had a issue,,only thing i agree with you on is the rear tire,,it does look cool but no matter what bike it affects the ride..my m109 has a big tire and it looks bad ass but is very hard to corner
Where do you live at what state I live in Florida also wondering have you had any issues with it besides what you have said also if the tires replaced with the tire you said does it help corner better please feel free to answer me
We live in North East Tennessee. Our starting issue was solved with another new battery. Apparently, the last battery was bad from the factory and that was the reason we had to keep it on the charger all the time. When it comes to a 300 rear, it does not corner the best. Don't get me wrong, it will go where you point it. Just takes a little more effort then something like the Honda Valkyrie. I' seen other people take the 300 off and replace it with a 250 rear and they love it. Right now we are replacing the clutch cable on it due to yellowing of the line. Feel free to send an email vgotspeed@yahoo.com
Salute great video.....I still won't a big dog Mastiff.....I will have a lot of upgrades 2 make so what just like a Harley you have to make it yours enough said
You have no idea. Harley's are a joke. Aftermarket German EHC, new digital speedo, and you'll have the best value on the market. But you listened to this guy?
I had a 2006 Pitbull… The Motor was GREAT!!!! My Headlight bolt or assemble came off once.. I was pissed because the bike cost 32K in 2006. The Gauge did work when it wanted to… I believe I replaced the battery once in 6 years…. The Bike was a lot of fun.. in a straight line, might I add… it was not built for handling… This is not a bike for the novice…!!!! It’s a Great Bar Hopper!!!!! Looks of Cool points and looks…!!! If I had the extra money, it would be the third or fourth bike in my garage again… Before you buy one, make sure you have a shop that can work on it….
The issue with the BD's is the overall hp. Even with the big 117ci they wouldn't make 90hp on a dyno. That same 117ci on an AIH scoot would drop 113 - 115 hp on a routine basis. And this is bone stock from both manufactures.
Get a 2008 or later, go to Wild Steed Worx and get a German EHC, if it needs a speedo get a digital and you'll have the coolest, best value on the market. This guy thinks a bike goes "straight on it's own" and the starter "clicks because it's bad" (needs a good battery) but hey, if you live your life listening to fools then you'll live a fools life.
Trying to help a buddy out he has a big dog k9 2008 while riding it-it just dies then takes anywhere from 5 min to 30 min to start can anyone help me understand just what the hell this thing is doing could it be the ehc?
Check the circuit breaker between the Voltage regulatory and the battery(under seat in battery tray) From factory they will have a rest button. I have replaced mine and has no reset button. The circuit pops when it gets to hot and resets when cool enough. My bike just shut down while riding. After reading blogs and service manual that was my issue $5.00 fix.
If you live your life listening to fools then you'll live a fools life. This guy is misinformation central I've owned five Big Dogs. Aftermarket EHC, digital speedo if needed, beefy battery, and you'll own the coolest best value on the market.
Thanks so much for confirming I made the best choice by buying my new Yamaha Raider S., LOVE IT, looks like a chopper but with the Yamaha dependability and price.
@barrypayne3976 yep thats why it confirmed i got a better ride in my yamaha raider s new for $11,750. Got it in 2018 and ride it in the Smokey's every October in North Carolina. Rode the Tail of the Dragon and the Ozaks, AR, around Lake Sam Rayburn, TX, arou d Alexandria, LA, and around south MS. Next April im riding it around Myrtle Beach, SC. LOVING IT
@@barrypayne3976 Wtf? I can get on a fkn scooter and go straight, doesn't mean I want one. It's all the other bs. When you ride everyday that shit matters.

Your drive belt might need adjustment. On my bike I had a chirp, and adjusting the belt tension made it go away. If that’s not the issue. You might have a bad pulley.
Cause the second one already had all the upgrades and picked it up under its value, way under its value. I'll buy anything if it's a good deal and I can make some money on it.

For the price of these things, it definitely doesn't seem worth it and I guess why I've never seen one on the road... Guess I'll stick with my 117 low rider until I can get a real chopper.

Wow that’s my actual bike… 2006 Mastiff. I’ve spent loads of money trying to keep this thing running, I probably just don’t ride it enough. But yeah, lots of problems… Always.
I agree, when they run. They are awesome but the upkeep is very expensive!
You didn't know what you were doing just like this guy.
Was on the fence for a 2007 K9 for $8,499 + 800.00 shipping. You just talked me out of it. Maybe I'll go with a Honda Fury. The Big Dog sounds like an absolute money pit and you'd spend more time screwing with it than riding it.
They are more of a show bike and garage queen then they are daily riders. Some people might disagree with me but that is my standpoint.
Yes, I am an original owner of a 2005 Big Dog, sold it after many times of being left sitting along the side of the road. the pain still hurts. ride on
I agree, I did for get a few things going over it. I didn't even think about the key thing until you mentioned it. That is a very common problem.
I have a 2000 chopper & a 2004 ridgeback. Now mind you every custom bike I ever owned had it’s share of issue. But I think you are missing the mark by saying everyone who buys one of these will deal with these issues.
Tie the key to one of the spark plug wires
Another of the blind leading the blind.
I guess I got lucky. Had a 06 K9 and 08 Ridgeback and very few issues other than clutches went out more often than I would have liked.
Does the difficulty in starting apply to the Big Dogs with the 107ci engine as well?
Do the wiring issues apply to the 2003 and earlier models with the Harley style controls as well?
That is a good question and to be honest, I dont know. I've owned several Big Dogs over the years and they always had the 117ci in them.
This is a great video. If the motorcycle was still available, I would be interested. I am interested in owning a big dog and your video is extremely helpful. Thank you for posting.
Actually yes, I still have the bike. I about to put a new clutch cable on it. Feel free to email me. Vgotspeed@yahoo.com
They are open again. Location Wichita ks
This was not a great video. It's a newby wants to be a man but can't handle it video.
Thanks for the info - just saved me a ton of money.
@@BentOaksGarage hope so I was looking into buying one thank you
This guy doesn't know what he's talking about.
I'd bet it never "went straight on it's own" now did it? Face it, this guy is a moron.
@@barrypayne3976 - True, in that the bike will never go straight on its own. What a total BS statement by that guy.
If you don't like wrenchin on a bike...then it ain't in your blood.
I've done all the work on my five Big Dogs. This guy is a moron.
The issue with the BD's is the overall hp. Even with the big 117ci they wouldn't make 90hp on a dyno. That same 117ci on an AIH scoot would drop 113 - 115 hp on a routine basis. And this is bone stock from both manufactures.
Wow. You deserve to listen to this guy. Misinformation central!
If you still have this bike, would you sell the sissy bar?
Thank you for the review
What model is this one I been wanting to get one
I'm my opinion, the best looking Big Dogs are the Bulldog and the Mastiff. You can get them either fuel injected or carbureted.
If you're going to spend that much money for a bike all those options should come on it from the factory !
Damn..The way its sounds though!!
Trying to help a buddy out he has a big dog k9 2008 while riding it-it just dies then takes anywhere from 5 min to 30 min to start can anyone help me understand just what the hell this thing is doing could it be the ehc?
I've had two of these beasts and both times they had the dead one Customs ecu. Maybe someone else that watches this video can answer.
@@BentOaksGarage awesome thanks for the reply much appreciated 👍🏻
Check the circuit breaker between the Voltage regulatory and the battery(under seat in battery tray) From factory they will have a rest button. I have replaced mine and has no reset button. The circuit pops when it gets to hot and resets when cool enough.
My bike just shut down while riding. After reading blogs and service manual that was my issue $5.00 fix.

Thanks so much for confirming I made the best choice by buying my new Yamaha Raider S., LOVE IT, looks like a chopper but with the Yamaha dependability and price.
You listened to this guy???
@barrypayne3976 yep thats why it confirmed i got a better ride in my yamaha raider s new for $11,750. Got it in 2018 and ride it in the Smokey's every October in North Carolina. Rode the Tail of the Dragon and the Ozaks, AR, around Lake Sam Rayburn, TX, arou d Alexandria, LA, and around south MS. Next April im riding it around Myrtle Beach, SC. LOVING IT
I have a 124 super sidewinder plus that would make this fly straight.......into whatever. 150 hp
Roger that. Guess I'm not buying one. Thanks. Sounds more of a headache. Awesome looking bike though.
So you listened to this genius? "THE BIKE WANTED TO GO STRAIGHT ON IT'S OWN". Ride much???
@@barrypayne3976 Wtf? I can get on a fkn scooter and go straight, doesn't mean I want one. It's all the other bs. When you ride everyday that shit matters.
that tire does NOT want to turn. it will stand up on it's own without the kickstand.
Fat tire, lean more. Skinny tire, lean less. Ride much?

Yes they do

Sounds like I should buy something else

Have you ever had an belt chirping squeal
No, I have not noticed anything like that on this bike.
Your drive belt might need adjustment. On my bike I had a chirp, and adjusting the belt tension made it go away. If that’s not the issue. You might have a bad pulley.
If the first bike u bought was junk why did u buy another one for if their junk
Cause the second one already had all the upgrades and picked it up under its value, way under its value. I'll buy anything if it's a good deal and I can make some money on it.
