what a legend..
If you drink a 12 pack in 45 minutes and listen to this on 11.. youll never come back.
And if you down a 24-pack in 45 minutes and listen to this on 10... then you will eventually blank right the hell out, pass out, go to sleep, and POOF.
Totally. I did, and I'm still 11. 🤘😅🤘
When you sound better live than the record!
😄👍👍
That's not the band's fault, Eddie fought with Ted for years
The band at their very best, still hungry with something to prove, superb performance.
I agree, I thought they were at their best, I was at the Hammersmith that night.
Saw their 1978 and 79 World Tours Blew my Ass away..still very vivid today 40 years later..
@ViridianG Same here. I missed my chances to see VH on the first two tours, when they were eager to impress. My first show was in 1980 on the "Hide Your Sheep" tour supporting the Women and Children First album. By that time the band was a full-on headlining act and not so concerned anymore with making the best possible impression -- Dave and Al were wasted drunk at the show I saw, and the performance suffered accordingly.
Saw them support sabbath.....magic!!
@ViridianG Eddie was always good live no matter the year. I was too young in 78-84 but that was their peak. They were awesome in the 80s from u tube videos I've seen.
@@reprintranch van Halen was good with Dave and Sammy. From what I've heard there were best 78-85 but 86-95 good also. I've seen their concerts on u tube.amazing stuff, Eddie was the best.
Damn daves voice in his prime ....killer
Can you imagine being the guy who was too cool to show up early to see the opening act and missed this? Geez. Walks in and his friends are sitting there mouths open, drooling and in complete shock. "What? What?! What did I miss??"
I was there to watch Black Sabbath, I found Black Sabbath rather flat after seeing Van Halen and that saying something.
@@nepaleseman1010 Van Halen had to support Black sodding Sabbath??
Man they were tight and on their game in ‘77 through the end of ‘78 like a razor sharp knife. I saw them in ‘83 and although they put on one of the best shows I have ever seen the alcohol and drugs took their toll by then when they played live. I would have killed to see them open for Montrose, Journey or Sabbath in ‘78
Lol! That would've been me!
Unbelievably great performance. Someone should send this to Eddie Trunk next time he says Dave couldn't sing live.
Eddie Flunk ... POS
My God, that solo!!! No matter how many different performances of Eddie's solos, there is something unique in every one of them. This one is designed to rearrange every guitar players minds at that concert. The attack is just unreal. Then the Hendrix like wammy bliss is mind blowing. Hands down, some of the most inspired incredible electric guitar playing there is. AND it was done in 1978!!! This sounds as modern and fresh as anything out there today 41 years later. Phenomenal.
On this day 45 years ago THE album came out. I try and listen to all the live VH stuff and this one rocks. Great audio. Long live THE MIGHTY VH
Top notch soundboard. One can only hope there are several multi track tapes up at 5150 of their live work. Their 1st Lp is a top 5 rock album of all time. STILL SOUNDS AMAZING 45 YEARS LATER.
Hell yeah!!!! Dig it
These poor people had no idea this unknown "opening act" were going to hit them square betreen the eyes with the Van Halen sledge hammer.
Anyone else notice the sound guy cranking it up during the opening song's solo? He probably said, these guys rock... Fuck it..crank it!!!
I did too
Real recognize real
Thanks VH Village, I think Edward is an alien, no human could make sounds from a guitar like that.
While I grew up with Alex, Edward, David Lee, Michael on the record player at home and at my uncle's with a pristine '80 or so Akai 4000 Reel2Reel (which he incidentally discarded before realizing his error in not presenting it to his musician nephew) but I digest...as I was so eloquently elaborating... grew up in the same vicinity having done Balance at Little Mountain Studios and any studio that is acceptable to Van Halen is acceptable to me...obviously as a keys and bass as well as guitar player Jump has been in my repertoire practically since I could...jump...anyways never gave them a point percentile of the admiration and respect they deserve until i heard the extremely early stuff. I would hazard this to be as good a London show as 1970 Royal Albert Hall where Eddie's stylistic idol started changing some things in music history, and Eddie responded brilliantly. Alex proves he is right there even this early, and that is coming from a serious Bonzo bias. David is raw ripping and relentless and Michael Anthony proves he belongs right up front alongside David's shock vocals. I am as hungry for the early Van Halen as I ever have been for early Zeppelin, absolutely magnificent, thank you.
One word " Mighty".
Wow...just wow! I would've killed to hear this as a live album 40 years ago! Just a band going for it!
When the first album came out the guitar playing blew our minds.
Yeeeah!R.I.P. King Edward. You are missed and will NEVER be forgotten!
That guitar solo was a man on fire. 😌
'' I can't wait to feel your love tonight...woooooo''...classic
VH is the greatest band in the universe, and yes Eddie is an alien, he speaks alien with his guitar, there's nobody , nobody that can play like him. He is the original"Atomic Punk" just like ELVIS, never ever be another person to do what he did and still does.... never.EVH is the"Goat" period
Good comparison!
79 Texxas Jamm... Boston, Heart, Van Halen, Nazareth, Sammy Hagar, TKO, I was 15 and I still have dead brain cells from that weekend falling out of my ears occasionally!!!
Eddie is flippin' unreal in this performance.
Dave the ringleader! God this show just ON POINT from front to back! They were just so good.
I can't believe EVH was playing like this in 1978. When you think you've become a "Guitar God" comeback and listen to this. This will humble you really quick. Sad thing is EVH wasnt even a guitarist. He was a Pianist.
Thank you. "When you think you've become a 'Guitar God' come back and listen to this" is as fine a tribute to Ed as I've seen anyplace. And I agree with you one million percent. Ed is workin' that guitar like his life depends on it.
So he played keyboards and piano first before playing guitar.
@@archdukebigdogkoopa3821 Cello also.
I can't imagine the reaction of guitarists back in 78' when they heard the likes of EVH and Eruption live and raw like it is in this recording. Absolutely mind blowing now still and imagine then!
Imagine having to follow this...unreal!
OMG... This sounds incredible!! VH at the pinnacle!! Raw, on top of their game and conquering the world!!
I can describe this fabulous band in just 1 word...... No I can't. This Band in my opinion is the greatest American Band ever on this planet and in the entire milky way.
That distinction goes to sum 41
I can describe this metal band one word that says: *_INSANE._*
@@calebproductions5970 they’re from Canada lol
The improv is amazing. I'm the one solo has a small bit of the super stretch scale from ice cream man solo. Long live the king in heaven.
Brian May was in the audience.....I am sure Eddie was on a mission with this show.
hehe!! You know he was!!!
For real?
This is a great example of Vintage VAN HALEN with Eddie dropping jaws to the floor , 'WOW' .
My favorite Van Halen concert. Rest in power Eddie!
Just imagine Tomi Iomi trying to follow Eddie's guitar shreds with his bar chords after this.
I can see why after this tour the original Black Sabbath lineup broke up, Van Halen was in a higher level in 1978 and it must have been really tough to follow them. Just ask Montrose and Journey that aslo couldn't follow this back in 1978. RIP Eddie Van Halen and long live the Mighty Van Halen.
My God , this is insane !!!!!!
Edward's lead playing at the end of D.O.A. is absolutely fuckin blistering
Can you imagine trying to follow this?
Opening for Sabbath, saw the same package at the Garden in NYC a couple of months later.
My 2 uncles were at that show and my Uncle Told me that my other Uncle left because it was so d*** loud !!!
He told me that after Van Halen left the stage they were whipped and left before Sabbath came out. Tru story.
Only just found this and it’s bringing back great memories of being there that night! We’d heard their debut album and were hoping that live they’d be as good. They were and then some... The Sabs were a massive anti climax after that set!
Hi JP - nice to see your name. My guess is you were there with Kev Rockett and some other Abbots characters. I went to see VH at the Rainbow after this show with Gary H. They tore it up ! Keep well - all the best - M
@@babylonska Hi there, You have me at a disadvantage as I don't know who you are...lol. That said I wasn't there with Kev Rockett as I think he'd left Abbots by then but glad you remembered me anyway after all this time.
For EVH! 🍺🍺🍻❤️. Amazing to hear this and hear VH opening for Black Sabbath 78. This was the Sabbath concert footage that they officially released of 78. How did they follow VH? 🤩🤩😶. “Rock and Roll Doctor “ following “I’m on Fire”. Wow. Yeah VH RISING💚🍻🤘 VH. Breaking open the door to a New Decade. ❤️🤘🍻
Rest in Peace Eddie!!
My favorite Live in 78 VH show was anaheim stadium!
The 78 Anaheim show was the first VH bootleg I ever heard. It blew me away in the same way that their first album did. I didn't think they could possibly be better live -- most bands aren't -- but VH was! The Anaheim show isn't the best quality, but the band's performance is beyond great! I only wish that the whole show was bootlegged and released.
@@rstoltz Here it is ua-cam.com/video/uHR56WM3Fzs/v-deo.html it still kicks ass!
ZERO downvotes. As God intended.
Alex is so underrated it's not even funny
For those who totally get it, and lived it as at teenager, this is fairly stellar
Fairly ? LOL this my friend is astonishingly great . There will never be another.
@@2216sammy 😜 yes. Obviously
Thnx for sharing. Mighty...!!!! Alex, Mike and Ed f-ing rock solid (as always) Dave, how we will remember him. Must have been a great show! Back when Ed's guitar sounded so freaking much better...sigh
I feel sorry for Sabbath headlining tho....
A gem!
This is f’en awesome except for the ad 30 seconds in. All good, VH puts me in such a good mood
Dig that set list!!!! Just startin out and that list could of easily been a greatest hits album, as could every vh album with dave
Sounds killer!!!Long Live Van Halen!!!!
Pure Jewel !
This is really good. Thanks for uploading
Thanks for listening!
Cresting the peak of their powers, incredible. So glad someone took the time to press record. Saved for the ages. You're welcome.
GD the screams Dave’s got goin on !
=VH= big rock ✌🎸😎
Pure fire! =VH=
Oh my god!!! This is so fantastic!!! Loved this from start to finish!!!! Amazing
Great music
Incredible
Yeah, I don't think I ever heard Dave make a stronger effort to replicate the album vocals than he does here.
The mighty!!!!
Tony Iommi and Brian May were in the audience....I think when you here this version of Eruption its one of the absolute best versions.
killer!!!!!!!!! thx for this; itoo am very lucky to have witnessed the hammer of the Gods!
Back when the used to mix shows at 110-114 db...now your lucky if it gets to 102
My God Alex is just shredding on this too! Thank you thank you for posting! Unbelievable!
Solid!
Wow,this sounds amazing,thank you
doesnt sound like a board show - BUT -it does sound great as is! Thank you!
Cheers to you Sir!!! Rock On!
Word up
Thank you! 👍🏼🎶🎶🎸
Eddie Van Halen R.I.P. 😢
⭐⭐⭐ KICK ASS 🌋🌋🌋
One of my favorite bootlegs. C'mon though, it's not a soundboard, it's a really excellent audience tape. Listen to the beginning and other spots, you can hear someone clapping close to the mic, which wouldn't happen in a soundboard recording which is direct from the mixing desk. My guess is this was recorded by the same taper who also got the Manchester and Ipswitch tapes that are at least as good from this tour. How the hell did they not make it onto bootleg vinyl back in the day? The taper must not have made copies for friends, otherwise it would have been scooped up by bootleggers.
Nice job on the sound, but I wish you had upped the volume on the first part to match the volume surge during the solo in "On Fire".
Yup, soundboards don't have audience noise that's nearly so loud. But, excellent audience recordings often sound better overall as compared to a "dry" soundboard.
I grew up in West Kensington so was only 5 minutes away from the Hammersmith Odeon when this show happened but was too busy going to watch shitty Punk Rock groups at the time...Regrets,I`ve had a few lol.
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Opening for Sabbath 🤘🤘🤘
Fuck..
I was 11 years old
Alex thundering away,....baby.
ENJOY.
42:12 LOL
This was from the Sabbath tour, correct?
Yup, absolutely.
One question to VH aficionados: were they a supporting act or the headline for these shows?
Opening for Black Sabbath
Thanks for the info. Two/too very much different style. I mean, VH opening for Black Sabbath. I took a look at the Wiki for this tour and Black Sabbath were astonished by VH and the effect they had on the audience.
@Biff Malibu
1st of all........not EVERYone knew that.
2nd.......it's NOT a stupid question.
3rd AND most important point of ALL:
your name is Biff. Now, how FUCKIN' stupid is THAT!!!!???? moron.
have another bong hit, idiot!
@@jerryvivanco4898 And, 4th, Van Halen DID play occasional club dates as a headliner in '78 on nights when they weren't opening for established bands, so there's that. See Greg Renoff's book, "Van Halen Rising," for details.
Sabbath be like, should we go on?
08:14 cliff Burton?
Is this a new band? And who is Black Sabbath?
Good one
You can see exactly why Ozzy and Sabbath were shitting themselves, and probably why Ozzy left. The same thing happened when Metallica supported Ozzy in '86 lol. However , it goes without saying Sabbath were the deserving pioneers of heavy metal, that title goes to them.
sadly there are gaps between songs
Just stop it
