    Lyrics:
Of all the money that e'er I had
I've spent it in good company
And all the harm that ever I done
Alas it was to none but me
For all I've done for want of wit
To memory now I can't recall
So fill to me the parting glass
Good night and joy be with you all
Oh, all the comrades that e'er I had
They're sorry for my going away
And of all the sweethearts that e'er I had
They'd wish me one more day to stay
But as it falls unto my lot
That I must go and you must not
I'll gently rise and I'll softly call
Good night and joy be with you all

“The Parting Glass” has roots in “Armstrong’s Farewell”, a poem written by a Scottish Border Reiver on the occasion of his imminent execution for the murder of Sir John Carmichael, Warden of the Scottish West March, in the year 1600.
It remains a hugely popular farewell song in Scotland and Ireland. Despite being commonly sung at merry social occasions, it has not lost its implied relevance to humankind’s ultimate, mortal farewell.

I've noticed that a lot of singers that have accents don't have much of one when they sing. I think it has to do with how they pronounce their vowels and consonants more deliberately when singing vs speaking. I have heard a couple of Hozier's songs where he has a discernable accent, but on most I can barely tell he has one, if I can tell at all.

My dad passed eight years ago. He had a dear friend who looked after him the last few years of his life until that dear friend suffered a stroke and had as much as he could handle just to see after himself. He had also been in the church chorus prior to his stroke. But, at my dad’s funeral, I asked him to try to sing this song at his funeral. Although he couldn’t carry the tune, he was able to haltingly deliver all the lyrics. Beauty is also in the “ear” of the beholders. The congregation was in tears as he finished.

With tears I am here. A year upon my father's own death. This is the only song that will allow for me to be present in that grief without allowing it to destroy me. To celebrate the life and say "dammit you are deadly missed" -- a parting glass, a year on my father. Dammit you ! why must life be so long, yet short at the same time.

This song is based on an old scottish poem made by a scottish brigand who was sentenced to death, and this poem is his farewell to his loved ones before turning himself in to the english authorities to be executed.
Its no wonder this song is dear to the Irish, when one thinks of their history.

i just spent 20 minutes crying after rewatching pride and prejudice (and other cathartic reasons non-related to the movie), opened youtube and this was the first thing
made me breathe what i needed
thank you for this beautiful rendition

The "parting glass", or "stirrup cup", or "le coup de l'étrier" was the final hospitality offered to a departing guest. Once they had mounted, they were presented one final drink to fortify them for their travels.

The emotion in Hozier’s voice and the gentleness of Alex’s piano make me want to cry… such a poignant performance.
Edit: This is such a hauntingly beautiful song I can’t stop thinking about it. Parsed through the most recommended covers on youtube and this remains my favorite rendition with Cara Dillon’s coming in a close second. Different vibes but both beautiful.
