In Brazilian Portuguese they had to change his Planeswalker type, so he's "Nicol Bolas" here instead of "Bolas", just to avoid having his type as BALLS.

32:27 A triggered ability with targets needs to have legal targets for it to go on the stack, so yes, you had to discard the Planeswalker cards on your upkeep.
Is there any reason not to discard already on upkeep? I don't see it..

Hi, i follow your videos for more than one year now and your content is top notch. This time i need to make a comment because this deck is amazing. I really like Bolas and i missed the bolas with fires so much after the ban. I tried this deck with some minors changes, it was erasure with 2 brought back and 2 dawn of hope. I did a 9-1 run with some spectacular comebacks, one of the games was a comeback from 2 life :) Well just wanted to say thanks for your videos and keep up with the good work. Bless you.

i feel ya cgb, 2 land hands all day no matter how high you go on your land count. also i got to mythic by going ultimate on the jeskai narset with a fae/clarion start, i'd love to see you rock your old jeskai control again.
I've been playing almost the same deck for quite some time now, and always having a blast with it =) 6 boardwipes instead of 4 and 4 cmc narset instead of kaya are the only differences. I feel like in bo1 you just need the additional sweepers, and in control matchups 4 cmc narset can discard the boardwipes to kill plainswalkers, so they aren't really in the way too much.
I was trying it too, but man it has no card draw and you're constantly fucked in lands.
@@cleverreally there is bolas and 3cmc narset for card draw, and if push comes to shove there is the black castle, for me that was enough so far. Also in my experience it's not really needed in this deck. I don't usually get grindy games. You either empty your opponents resources and have an unchallenged bolas on the board by turn 10 or so (which makes them scoop) , or you're dead anyway ^^

Just as an option, I run Mortify x3 in my B/W/U Control deck. Also, I only run 3 of each planeswalker (as I only run 3 of each of everything, so I can have more options), and throw in Clear the Mind, to get all the juicy stuff back from the GY. Teferi +1 and CTM on opponent's end step is always a great time.
In order to put an ability with a "target" on the stack, you need to have at least one valid target (the same applies to spells). So, it was definitely a good idea to do the Fae of Wishes discard trick in your draw step so that you can see one more card to help decide what you should discard, but after drawing while still in your draw step you'd need to discard the planeswalkers so that you have a valid target when you reach your main phase and you go to put the triggered ability on the stack.
Take a close look the next time ECD reaches chapter 3 and you'll notice that you choose targets before putting the ability on the stack. This is because target selection is actually a "part of" putting the ability on the stack. This is also what would let a Scavenging Ooze "eat" your ECD target with the trigger on the stack because you had to choose a target beforehand.

Hey CGB i play a list very similar to this, and birth of meletis is crucial imo. you need to be able to hit land drops ups to 7 or 8 usually and the 0/4 protects 3-drop planeswalkers really well (or at least forces commitment from multiple creatures or a questing beast). Also, if you wanna play something like this long term I would definitely recommend spreading 5-7 wraths over extinction event, ritual of soot, and shatter the sky. also, bear in mind that you can play any 2colour planeswalker off interplanar beacon, so you could easily include GB Garruk or Tamio in the wishboard. I would definitely recommend it, as my climb was steady, easy, and fun. i tried thought erasue in the early iterations but it's awful. if you really want a look effect 1-2 maindeck spyglass is better in every matchup except mono red (but interplanar beacon and and birth win that matchup easily, and you can still name embercleave or the castle to lock them out in the late game, and force threats onto the table to get wrathed). anyway, love the vids, had plenty of great inspiration from all your different decks in the last few week. cheers :)

I have the reverse luck with shuffler. Have a mono-red deck with 13 lands and still find myself 3 and 4 land hands
ECD trigger failed because targets are chosen on the announcement of the spell/ability. A spell can't be cast without a target and a triggered ability will fizzle. There was no legal target when the ability was put on the stack.
Actually, it was because it was only the second counter, not the third. CGB had to wait for the next turn to do the thing...

Always have a card that can wipe the board in your deck rule n°1 against alllllllll the aggro decks in the meta ! Then only you can control the game once your opponents has put all his creatures on the board and has nothing more to play...well that's my opinion, "Shatter the sky", "Time wipe" (especially with Fae of wishes) works fine here :)
What do you think of the idea of adding another benefit to being on the draw? I'm not sure what could be added but feel like it could be healthy for the game if going first wasn't so obviously the best choice
interesting idea... maybe running Unsubstantiate as a better Aether Gust? Running that many potential targets I'd also try out some Sparkdoubles as well. Really like the card and how it effects the games!
That would be a good idea if there wasn't a competitive legacy deck that wants to be on the draw.

@@lucius6639 wouldn't be a big benefit for being on the draw. I was thinking something like a scry 1 before your first draw step but I understand small things like this can have a big impact on the game.

What do you think about replacing the thought erasures with eliminates in the current meta? Like game 1, that erasure would be much better as an eliminate for the pelt collector.

I was playing a 28 land deck and would constantly get stuck on 3 mana. It's crazy how bad it is.
I stopped trying to run anything with more than two colors because of shuffler. Maybe it's confirmation bias, but I notice I tend to start with hands that have my minority colors or utility lands more often.
I've been having a lot of problems with land lately too. Run 24 in a shell with a cmc of 2.01 and still get screwed routinely. I need 3 to run all but one card (need 4 for the last), but lately I get stuck at 2 lands through 15+ cards. 0_o
is shuffer broken cheating?
I always ask three questions when thinking about topics like this.
1. Is it possible? could mtg rig the shuffler ( I would say yes)
2. Are there person or persons who would want to do it?
3. Do they have the means and ability to do it.
If all three questions are yes I would say its highly probable and in this case I would say all three are yes.
Im not a bad man, but since it helps the algorithm ....

MTGA standard shuffler is a mess. I feel the pain, I get two out of six decent games running 25-28 lands and still get draws in a row where I have to Mulligan three or four times. That's when I lose patience and walk away because I am no longer enjoying rng. I sympathize with the frustration. At least there's jumpstart now.

Hey guys, the shuffler's not broken......JK it is broken there is a great reddit post that explains the only way to get decent land draws is to start with a 3 land hand or put 23 lands in your deck, if you start with 2 it lowers your chance to get lands and if you start with 4 it increases your chance to get lands. Guy did a lot of research but wizards says "Nothing to see here move along"
