@@d.r.u. first, Scooby-doo is an IP with over 50 years. It's a part of people's childhood. Grabbing that IP and use it to insult people racially, sexually and socially is just pure narcissism and disrespect. Second, this cartoon is not catered to children. It tries to be like F is for Family, Rick and Morty, etc... but then insults that same target audience. So the writers and actors are either really bad parents or they have no idea who its target audience is or wants. All of the jokes this show tells is to present something bad and breaking the forth wall saying how bad that was. Third, i'm not going to waste my time debating with a stranger on the internet who defends a show like Velma.
You know, in regards to Velma... I gotta give Mindy her props. Cause it takes a special type of toxic stupidity to piss off both sides of the spectrum in just two episodes. The fact that she managed to get people and review sites that would normally back crap like that mad at her is impressive if nothing else.

I hate how high school is portrayed in media even now. Gen Z school life is not as mean-spirited as American movies make them out to be. It's a lot of inside jokes, memes, and self-deprecation. All the "Popular kids", Mean girls are honestly at the Bottom of the pyramid and the acutual outcasts.
Literally either everyone else doesn’t like them or the popular girls are genuinely kind people. I mean, for me personally, I live in a town where it’s fake hicks only. Being the only goth kid, I sometimes get targeted. But it is never actually hurtful, just kinda dumb.

Mindy obviously has deep set racial biases based on how she treats black characters in her shows. However, it's kind of annoying that every brown girl that makes entertainment has to be the next reprentation girlslayboss when shes just brown lol. Being brown or black does not make you not racist.

If I remember correctly, Mindy outwardly said on a talk show that she couldn’t help herself and kissed a costar in a scene (Lee Pace) despite it not being in the script because he was so handsome. This is even worse in the context that Mindy was his boss and that Lee Pace is an outwardly gay man. Idk, ever since then it’s felt like the Mindy Project has these predatory self inserts for romance with actors she thinks are hot.

South Asian millennial woman here - I've never particularly warmed to Mindy because of her weirdness about race. I kind of think of her as our Lena Dunham - very witty and insightful in some respects, but utterly lacking self-awareness in other respects. I can't bring myself to dislike her because she is creating opportunities for representation. However, it's not representation I'm particularly proud of, know what I mean?

I've recently had a large problem with Mindy. Her show The Mindy Project is a show entirely about her, and then Velma feels like another show about her. Self insert after self insert, but the second time around it was using a well-known IP (the legendary Scoobert Doobert) to make herself the star again. She helped write it, she STARS in it, and almost all of the characters compliment her flattering at some point. Mainly Norville AKA Supposed-To-Be-Shaggy, who literally tells Velma she's "the main character." Low-key feel like she wrote that into the script herself to stroke her ego once voice reels were started
The 2000s live-action Scooby Doo movie is actually so good! Although, I feel like the OG Daphne comes across as gentle and sweet, not bratty and preppy (with a heart of gold still) like all the other versions after her are.

Honestly, my biggest problem with her is her tendency to fall back on identity politics when something she’s involved in isn’t well received. She called out everyone being trolls when Oceans 8 underperformed and while I don’t doubt that some people are just bigots trying to take piss out of her, lumping all criticism to “you only hate this cause I’m a woman and POC” comes off as very entitled and unprofessional.
You missed so much, people are actually tired of her making fun of being South Asian and basically being ashamed of it as evident in her shows. Its fine once or twice but her South Asian fans are tired of being the butt of the joke. I never cared much about her but it's obvious she is insecure about being South Asian and puts that into her characters

I remember reading her autobiography "Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?" and being so put off and disgusted by how evident it is that she hates being Indian. She never misses an opportunity to mention how much she hates Indian food, doesn't speak her parent's languages, doesn't associate with other South Asians or even other POC etc She even goes on a tangent about how badly she wishes she were blonde and blue eyed. She seems to be the type who thinks assimilation means annihilation of your roots. Its so pitiful and sad.

I mean, she is Indian by race but i don't even think she's ever been to that country or is very knowledgeable about their history or culture, she doesn't even speak the language and doesn't associate herself with them UNLESS she can use the ethnicity as some type of badge that allows her to be "different" and "special". I'm Latin American myself (from actual Latin America) and to be honest, i don't feel identified by any "latino" celebrity in the US. They have their own identity over there which if you ask me, is very exaggerated. Truth is, they often try to act like they embody the culture of over 30 countries (from México to Chile) and we're supposed to feel proud of that?. I just read an article about her passionately kissing Lee Pace without his consent behind the scene on her show. She even threatened to fire two crew members that saw what happened if they told anyone because they warned her right after that Lee could sue her for sexual harassment. Her true colors are showing and I hope she won't be getting away with this vile information about her that have just resurfaced. She's a lot worse than Aziz Ansari.

Just to add to all this, it cannot be overstated how obvious a product of her environment Mindy is. I grew up in and around Cambridge in roughly the same socio-economic bracket as her, and I have at least half a dozen friends who exhibit similar behavior. In particular, she showcases a slightly awkward relationship with social interactions and a mild fetishization of the upper-middle class, Ivy-league educated white guy (thanks Harvard; and this tracks for people in that area regardless of race, gender or sexuality). But what I see in Mindy and all of my friends who grew up in that environment (one dominated by the middle/upper-middle class, STEM and achievement-obsessed parent) that really guts me is the blatantly obvious and desperate attempt after attempt to get people to look at them; when your parents and community largely gauge your value by how many accolades you've got to your name, and not by your inherent humanity, everything becomes a performance at the cost of any sort of authenticity or principles. Virtually everything Mindy-related makes me just plain sad, because she's clearly doing what she does in attempt to be loved or get someone's approval. In short: fucking Cambridge parents... Aaaanyway, just stumbled across your channel while looking for opinions/analyses of Velma that weren't just the product of some, uh, "chud" I think you call them? yes!! as a Gen Z immigrant woman of color who is Indian, you basically summed up how I feel about Mindy's projects! She grew up in a time where there was more racism, and she's internalized it and now projected it onto her characters. If she had some self-awareness, I would actually enjoy the things she makes but even her hit show, Never Have I Ever, made me want to pull my hair out because of the lack of self-awareness.
The first couple seasons were ok but the whole premise was this never ending rom com which only work once the main character falls in love and there's a wrap up so the plot started to get tired and redundant. I lost interest after season 3 I think.
it moved to Hulu after season 3 I think, so maybe that's why? I loved the show and watched all seasons, but I only REALLY loved the first 2 seasons. It was less entertaining once the slow burn with Danny stopped, and I cared so much less about their actual relationship. Side characters like Morgan are what kept me watching.
I think Mindy grew up at a time that was much more racist than the gen z audience can understand. She has a lot of internalized racism-which is understandable. She grew up in the 90’s and early 00’s where I’m sure she felt ugly. Luckily the one good thing about social media is that POC are on a come up. We can find each other so much easier and support each other and we have more visibility than we ever did (not saying it’s enough but it’s more than what Mindy grew up with). I remember seeing an Indian content creator say she didn’t understand Mindy’s south Asian characters because she never grew up thinking she was smelly or hairy or being bullied for being south Asian. Which is great, but that means Mindy can’t capture her experience. This girl was used to loving her Indian self and dating brown guys! It’s a bit of a privilege we have now but I do understand where Mindy is coming from. It’s just a millennial take.
I think a creator doing what they please in their magnum opus is cool. But when their less than savory tropes inform EVERY project going forward that's when it starts getting suspicious. It's like Kenya Barris. Black-ish was cool. But with every show that follows: Mixed-ish, Black af, Grownish, certain patterns come to light.
To get back to Scooby Doo, I do also feel this “let’s make a mature Scooby Doo” which you’re seeing in the promotion for “Velma” shows a lack of knowledge of the brand because of “Scooby Doo Mystery Incorporated” Edit : YES SDMI isn’t “adult” which Velma is but you don’t need to be “adult” to deal with serious issues

Even if you didn't watch "That Far" into Velma episode 2 to get too the bi-sexual relationship in the end, the relationship that preceeded it didn't set it up properly at all. The two of them start out hating each other in episode one and then in episode 2 they bond a little bit over Daphne extorting Velma in order to get her to sell drugs so she can find her real parents, only for Velma to have a panic attack at the end of the episode so Daphne can kiss her? They had a few cute-ish lesbian moments and that was it. There was virtually NO reason for them to be together AT ALL. They hated each other for god's sakes. Hell, the first episode starts with Velma attacking Daphne with a cane while she's naked in the girl's locker room. It makes no sense.
if you read her biography where she talks about her childhood the only pairs herself up with handsome white men thing makes a lot of sense, she clearly felt othered a lot due to various aspects of her identity so to me this could be chalked up as herself granting herself the ideal partner as her childhood self saw it. and as someone who also felt othered i sort of get it! but in no way condone it, it is cringe. also she went to dartmouth during her formative young woman years so that explains some of it. i think she’s a little too powerful and doesn’t get told no enough written wise hence stuff like this

Considering there is like… ONE south Asian female comedian in Hollywood lol! I feel uncomfortable telling her how to tell her stories. I feel like if only they had made the characters likeable, the show would be 50% better. You don't need your characters to be huge assholes just to be edgy, you can do edgy while giving them SOME redeeming qualities. The jokes would still be shit and the plot would still be empty, but at least it MIGHT be SLIGHTLY enjoyable to watch
why didn’t you discuss Never Have I Ever? I feel like that’s one of her more recent shows that’s actually made for a younger generation but still manages to be very funny, diverse and relatable, and while I don’t know how much input she’s had I’ve heard many people mention Mindy positively
I think people have the same criticisms of NHIE because Mindy’s self hate and obsession with white guys that treat her like shit is still front and center in Devi’s character
@@knowdaqueen177 I've been following NHIE closely and while the first season did fall into some of the tropes people took issue with in the Mindy Project (and rightfully so imo), I think anyone who's still criticizing NHIE for perpetuating the self-hating minority stereotype hasn't been watching the show past the first season. Btw this is not a diss at you, I want to be respectful! This is about the Discourse I've been seeing online which has either ignored or misrepresented NHIE in a dishonest way because this show in particular actually shows that Mindy has been listening to people's criticism and growing as a writer. Over the course of the three seasons so far, the MC Devi has had love interests who are half-white half-Japanese (Paxton), white Jewish (Ben), and Indian (Des), the last one in particular calls her out on her self-hating anti-Indian bias and leads her to do a lot of unpacking. Unlike the MC Mindy Lahiri from Mindy Project, Devi isn't surrounded by white people. Her friends are a Chinese theatre kid (Eleanor) and an Afro-Latina robotics nerd (Fabiola) and they all have very different personalities. She's called out whenever she puts down her culture by other Indians who are less insecure in themselves and she learns to get over that insecurity. In the second season, she makes friends with a an Indian Muslim girl (Aneesa) who turns out to be bisexual and has relationships with Ben and Fabiola. While Mindy Lahiri's family and Indian roots are absent for much of the show, Devi is shown to have a very close Indian family from her mother to her cousin, who becomes like an elder sister, to her grandmother. And in terms of the diversity of their relationships, her cousin has one Chinese and two Indian love interests. Her mother is shown to have had a very loving and supportive marriage with an Indian man and briefly dates a Black colleague after her husband's death. Listing off all the ethnicities and backgrounds like this makes it seem a bit trivial and even tokenizing, but the show does put in the time to flesh out these characters and relationships over three seasons that makes it feel pretty authentic as far as it's possible in a 30 minute 10 episode comedy series focusing on high school kids. I think it's a very clear response to the Mindy Project being so white. (I sometimes wonder if the trade-off Mindy had to make for being the lead in a Fox sitcom back in 2012 was to surround herself with mostly white supporting cast. In any case, I don't think there's enough criticism of the big networks and execs who are certainly all white men behind her while she's often the scapegoat in these controversies. Not saying she's perfect or above criticism ofc, just saying we need to be more mindful of the structural problems in this kind of outrage.) Now, do I think Devi will still ultimately "end up" with the white Jewish boy? Yes, probably, because Mindy seems to love the rivals to lovers trope, but the show itself has spent so much time deconstructing the "mixed-race with a white man" relationship trope and showing lots of other Indian women in a variety of relationships, including outside heterosexuality, that the show won't be sending any harmful messages, even if this is "endgame". NHIE isn't a perfect show in any sense, but it's mostly very good representation and also a pretty solid high school comedy. The fact that it's getting left out of The Discourse in this current Mindy backlash speaks to the fact that many people aren't criticizing her in good faith.

While I agree that NHIE does probably the best job of addressing that (I haven’t seen the Sex Lives of College Girls) I think it’s more to the point that the self hating Indian trope is present period. And more so that after writing a show like NHIE that shows that type of growth, Mindy has gone on to make shows that fall right back into the same groove. I honestly think it’s even more insidious that Mindy has proven that she “gets it” by writing a show like NHIE but continues to make characters reminiscent of S1 Devi. It reads as NHIE being a way to say some people actually do like being Indian and Velma (and SLOCG from what I’ve heard) saying but *I* hate being Indian. My comment is less of a critique of the show (which I actually do enjoy) and more a critique on how even in good faith she can’t help but write the nerdy self hating Indian. While Mindy is free to feel how she feels about her culture it’s just sad that she is almost the main South Asian rep and puts down her culture in every project.

I've followed Mindy's career since middle school.......read her book.......she has a bias. I think its unfair to only be mad at Mindy though. From what I've seen of the show, it really wants to be Mystery Incorporated, even down to having the characters live in Crystal Cove rather than the usual Coolsville. This show really is the definition of how shows made for kids are more adult than adult shows. You say you want to make a serious show about murder and drugs but then you undercut any of that with this terrible low brow raunchy humor that does nothing but confuse the tone and drag the pacing to a total stand still.

HBO thinks that just cuz Harley Quinn was a hit Velma would be too. But they failed to realize that Harley is supposed to be unlikeabley likeable the same thing won't work with Velma.
Scooby doo 2002 is my favorite movie of all time, everyone always judges me for it, but to me they are a campy masterpiece and no other movies could beat it
weird that you didn’t discuss NHIE. i think it’s the most popular mindy show from recent years, and she’s said that she’s drawn a lot from her life. i feel like devi is basically just mindy when she was 15. it was a plot point in s3 that devi doesn’t like indian men, and she even got an indian boyf, but a lot of people thought it was just a throwaway plot to stop the critics from drawing parallels. there’s also an episode in the mindy project where she goes on a date with an indian man, and he calls her “white on the inside” - that’s the episode where she gets more integrated into her indian culture.
Regarding the JK Rowling tweet incident, I remember Mindy confirming or at the very least liking tweets that stated that they were liked on accident, not on purpose. I didn't know about her brother but that is very problematic. She also did the same thing as The Mindy Project with Never Have I Ever as well

Great video! I went into this show actually really excited from the first trailer, specifically because of a “dark” look at the Mystery Inc. gang, but as more stuff started to come out about it, I got pretty on-edge about it. Specifically the art style. An ugly art style can be enough to turn me away COMPLETELY from a show. I started on it and the art was just… wow.. it was really ugly. The whole Shaggy (refuse to call him Norville) almost being a horrible person arc felt really forced, and the writing was, like. REALLY BAD. Like there was a point halfway through the first episode that I was like “is this supposed to be like.. Gravity Falls writing but worse? Like it can’t be for adults… but it also can’t be for kids…” It was just.. honestly horrible. A lot of gore that I feel like was just shock value without going anywhere. The 2nd corpse goes nowhere. The best character was Shaggy and I laughed a good maybe 5 times throughout both episodes and that was because of 1 thing that Fred said, and 3 things that Shaggy said. The Lil’ Wayne stoner line could’ve been so funny if it was executed better, but I felt like it just.. fell really flat. As do a lot of jokes with potential in this show. They have HORRIBLE delivery. The hitler joke felt overplayed and forced to me, and a lot of shit just went nowhere. It’s unfortunate, if it didn’t have the Scooby Doo name attached to it, it could have been another Paradise P.D. like you said.

Some of the discourse about the show is valid though. Yes, muh "not like when I was a kid", but honestly people are sick and tired of Hollywood totally reworking classic media to update it for current times. Why can't they leave original stuff in its original form? Make NEW stuff? This show wouldn't have been as poorly received if it was the Mindy project but animated. The criticism that Mindy is only interested in white guys is racist af. For GENERATIONS men and women have put their preferences (and some of them even fetishes) on the screen and no one talks about it as being a problem until a brown woman shows her preference. Why is it so problematic for her to have a preference? Why is it okay for a black girl to say she's not attracted to white men but it's not okay for Mindy to show interest in white guys? All I'm trying to say is that this wouldn't even be a point of discussion if it was a man or a white woman. Mindy Kaling has never had a "fall from grace" because even at her damn highest she has constantly been questioned and devalued for her efforts. To this day there are people saying the office would be better off without her character with absolutely no self awareness or realization that Mindy herself wrote many of the jokes that they love so much. Velma is indeed a flop, but more than that it's an opportunity to knock Mindy Kaling down a peg because she's just had it too good for too long and we can't let a brown woman have that. Look how many catastrophically bad shows are put out there without the names of the people behind them (or who they are attracted to) even being whispered? I saw something similar when Eternals was released. It was a bad movie, but for the first time in MCU history the director was being dragged along with the movie, something that had never happened before in any of these movies. Imagine my surprise when I realized it was a POC woman who directed the movie. It's embarrassing how we're so willing to partake in this public shaming of POC women while claiming it's for the sake of progress (literally why else would Mindy's sexual preferences be a topic of discussion if not for the fact that her preferences aren't progressive enough?). I really think this is an opportunity for us all to do better because the reaction to Mindy in the last few weeks has been disgusting and clearly racially motivated.
People have made this argument in her defense and honestly consider Quinta Brunson... She has a white husband but doesn't base her personality around having a white partner, her show has the protagonist who's most likely her self insert and she still gave her character a black love interest and uplifts black women and men... Velma on the other hand is the fourth time Kaling created a show featuring a self loathing Indian woman who worships white guys that wouldn't even look in her direction. This isn't even about preference, Kaling still hasn't gotten over the one white guy that rejected her in high school and uses her shows as a shallow outlet

Mindy sucks, for various reasons ( which is obvious ), so I'll just focus on Velma. I haven't completely watched Velma, so I suppose I can't say anything too negative. From the few clips I've seen of it, the writing is the main issue. You are correct, the characters act nothing like the original characters they're supposed to be. The relationship // kiss scene is kind of weird, apparently Velma is having a panic attack, but Daphne decides it's best to just kiss her? The relationship could have worked out, but they needed to flesh it out, this romance just felt so rushed // forced, for no reason at all. All in all, Velma's quite terrible, and I suppose Mindy's just gotten more annoying. That's all I have to say.
Race swapped… but Fred is still white and Shaggy, the stoner, is the black man. I found that counterproductive. And Velma, the less desirable/attractive female of the bunch by western standards, is now a lesbian. Such an obnoxious trope for the unwanted female, but now make her a woman of color and it’s even more out of touch with what being subversive and actually doing these characters justice means.
I think Mindy is being held to this standard in part because she is South Asian. White TV female creators like Amy Sherman Pallidino make the same main characters over and over again and that is not the reason she gets critiqued.

@@phil6748 This was a valid criticism after her first show, The Mindy Project, but since then she's written Never Have I Ever and Sex Lives of College Girls, where the show either completely avoids the self-hating Indian trope or has characters arcs where they unlearn the internalised racism and become more secure as people. So it's not really fair to apply this criticism generally across all her work anymore. Furthermore, the difficulty with being a creator from a marginalized community is that you want to represent the group but also be authentic and that can mean mining one's own experiences. Mindy probably experienced a lot of self-hatred growing up in a primarily white part of the country through school and college especially in the 80s and 90s. Stereotypes can be stereotypes for a reason, you just have to approach them with some nuance. She also seems to enjoy writing complicated women who aren't perfect or even entirely likeable and you get to see them grow into themselves over the show. It's totally valid for her to want to write that into her characters. Some would call this "bad" representation. I wouldn't normally agree, but if she's the only female South Asian showrunner, it might feel that way. The _solution_ is to have more women of colour create shows so they can all write the different types of characters they each want. It's not really fair to expect one person to be able to represent the varied experiences of South Asian women across generations. Like, I'm not saying she's not worthy of criticism, but I think we need to be careful that we don't set harsher standards for woc (than for white men and women) who are already starting at a disadvantage in this industry.

Bad representation is a fair critique, but "she only dates white guys!" is a weird complaint when quite a few white female characters in shows also date mostly white guys. It feels like the arbitrary internet discourse hates her rn so now everything questionable or odd is fodder for problematizing her.
This doesn't mean that there isn't perfectly fair criticism to be had (I've definitely heard a lot about The Mindy Project semi-endorsing anti-Indian sentiment with Mindy the character's self-hate that is never deconstructed by the show), but it mixing with personal attacks like that give the feeling of trying to perpetuate a cycle of negativity towards someone, not productive conversation

I just really don't like Mindy. I don't think Velma was a good show at all (I watched it all btw), but I really hate Mindy for admitting she kissed Lee Pace after a scene and laughing about how he was uncomfortable with it and how he freaked out because of her just kidding him out of the blue. She pretty much laughed about forcing a guy to kiss her and when he got upset, she had a "suck it up buttercup". Like that the f-ck?? Who would joke about that?? And she admitted to this on live TV and had little to no consequences! Yeah f-ck that, she sucks.
I think it's a little unfair to frame her brother's racist actions as one of Kaling's flaws. She has some problems, obviously, and I've never been a fan, but that's not really on her.
Thanks for bringing up this topic, I subscribed to you because issues like this have bothered me for quite a while. Not just because of Mindy but a lot of diverse celebrities that should do more in representing their respective communities better. However, in Mindy Kaling's case she's shown that she's got some extreme racial and gender bias against Indian men, internalized hate that clearly runs in even her own family. Especially since her brother ended up pretending to be an entirely different ethnicity because he has a problem with his own. If Mindy actually gave a damn about indian men she would have no qualms about featuring some in main roles and even having an interracial relationship that shows an indian male with someone of different ethnicity. However, she never does, she only features the opposite in her projects. Instead she only ever showed indian girls paired up with white males, as if any other ethnicity of black, brown or asian doesn't matter. Neither does she ever feature any indian male as one of the main characters.... All crap like this does is break the self-esteem of indian guys like myself, trying to make us feel as we don't belong in western society and are inferior, and also showing audiences that women of our own race don't want anything to do with us. It's a poor representation and Mindy was one of the very first prominent indian celebrities we had in western entertainment. One that had social platform to represent all of us Indians, regardless of gender and pull us all into the spotlight with her work; but she never did.
Want to redo a "Scooby-Doo" type show but with a more diverse spin, then do that. It does not need to be Scooby-Doo. I have watch a few South Asian shows that cover the supernatural investigation theme.

South Asian millennial woman here - I've never particularly warmed to Mindy because of her weirdness about race. I kind of think of her as our Lena Dunham - very witty and insightful in some respects, but utterly lacking self-awareness in other respects. I've recently had a large problem with Mindy. Her show The Mindy Project is a show entirely about her, and then Velma feels like another show about her. Self insert after self insert, but the second time around it was using a well-known IP (the legendary Scoobert Doobert) to make herself the star again. She helped write it, she STARS in it, and almost all of the characters compliment her flattering at some point. Mainly Norville AKA Supposed-To-Be-Shaggy, who literally tells Velma she's "the main character." Low-key feel like she wrote that into the script herself to stroke her ego once voice reels were started

Just to add to all this, it cannot be overstated how obvious a product of her environment Mindy is. I grew up in and around Cambridge in roughly the same socio-economic bracket as her, and I have at least half a dozen friends who exhibit similar behavior. In particular, she showcases a slightly awkward relationship with social interactions and a mild fetishization of the upper-middle class, Ivy-league educated white guy (thanks Harvard; and this tracks for people in that area regardless of race, gender or sexuality). But what I see in Mindy and all of my friends who grew up in that environment (one dominated by the middle/upper-middle class, STEM and achievement-obsessed parent) that really guts me is the blatantly obvious and desperate attempt after attempt to get people to look at them; when your parents and community largely gauge your value by how many accolades you've got to your name, and not by your inherent humanity, everything becomes a performance at the cost of any sort of authenticity or principles. Virtually everything Mindy-related makes me just plain sad, because she's clearly doing what she does in attempt to be loved or get someone's approval. In short: fucking Cambridge parents...

yes!! as a Gen Z immigrant woman of color who is Indian, you basically summed up how I feel about Mindy's projects! She grew up in a time where there was more racism, and she's internalized it and now projected it onto her characters. If she had some self-awareness, I would actually enjoy the things she makes but even her hit show, Never Have I Ever, made me want to pull my hair out because of the lack of self-awareness.

The first couple seasons were ok but the whole premise was this never ending rom com which only work once the main character falls in love and there's a wrap up so the plot started to get tired and redundant. I lost interest after season 3 I think.
it moved to Hulu after season 3 I think, so maybe that's why? I loved the show and watched all seasons, but I only REALLY loved the first 2 seasons. It was less entertaining once the slow burn with Danny stopped, and I cared so much less about their actual relationship. Side characters like Morgan are what kept me watching.
Id see ads for it crop up on hulu once in awhile when it was going. I couldn't get through ep one even though I liked her in the office .
I think Mindy grew up at a time that was much more racist than the gen z audience can understand. She has a lot of internalized racism-which is understandable. She grew up in the 90’s and early 00’s where I’m sure she felt ugly. Luckily the one good thing about social media is that POC are on a come up. We can find each other so much easier and support each other and we have more visibility than we ever did (not saying it’s enough but it’s more than what Mindy grew up with). I remember seeing an Indian content creator say she didn’t understand Mindy’s south Asian characters because she never grew up thinking she was smelly or hairy or being bullied for being south Asian. Which is great, but that means Mindy can’t capture her experience. This girl was used to loving her Indian self and dating brown guys! It’s a bit of a privilege we have now but I do understand where Mindy is coming from. It’s just a millennial take.
I think a creator doing what they please in their magnum opus is cool. But when their less than savory tropes inform EVERY project going forward that's when it starts getting suspicious. It's like Kenya Barris. Black-ish was cool. But with every show that follows: Mixed-ish, Black af, Grownish, certain patterns come to light.
To get back to Scooby Doo, I do also feel this “let’s make a mature Scooby Doo” which you’re seeing in the promotion for “Velma” shows a lack of knowledge of the brand because of “Scooby Doo Mystery Incorporated”

Even if you didn't watch "That Far" into Velma episode 2 to get too the bi-sexual relationship in the end, the relationship that preceeded it didn't set it up properly at all. The two of them start out hating each other in episode one and then in episode 2 they bond a little bit over Daphne extorting Velma in order to get her to sell drugs so she can find her real parents, only for Velma to have a panic attack at the end of the episode so Daphne can kiss her? They had a few cute-ish lesbian moments and that was it. There was virtually NO reason for them to be together AT ALL. They hated each other for god's sakes. Hell, the first episode starts with Velma attacking Daphne with a cane while she's naked in the girl's locker room. It makes no sense.
Yeah and daphne falling for mindy I mean velma was out of left field. Especially when daphne forgave velma for all the shit she's pulled off
if you read her biography where she talks about her childhood the only pairs herself up with handsome white men thing makes a lot of sense, she clearly felt othered a lot due to various aspects of her identity so to me this could be chalked up as herself granting herself the ideal partner as her childhood self saw it. and as someone who also felt othered i sort of get it! but in no way condone it, it is cringe. also she went to dartmouth during her formative young woman years so that explains some of it. i think she’s a little too powerful and doesn’t get told no enough written wise hence stuff like this

@@knowdaqueen177 I've been following NHIE closely and while the first season did fall into some of the tropes people took issue with in the Mindy Project (and rightfully so imo), I think anyone who's still criticizing NHIE for perpetuating the self-hating minority stereotype hasn't been watching the show past the first season. Btw this is not a diss at you, I want to be respectful! This is about the Discourse I've been seeing online which has either ignored or misrepresented NHIE in a dishonest way because this show in particular actually shows that Mindy has been listening to people's criticism and growing as a writer.
Over the course of the three seasons so far, the MC Devi has had love interests who are half-white half-Japanese (Paxton), white Jewish (Ben), and Indian (Des), the last one in particular calls her out on her self-hating anti-Indian bias and leads her to do a lot of unpacking. Unlike the MC Mindy Lahiri from Mindy Project, Devi isn't surrounded by white people. Her friends are a Chinese theatre kid (Eleanor) and an Afro-Latina robotics nerd (Fabiola) and they all have very different personalities. She's called out whenever she puts down her culture by other Indians who are less insecure in themselves and she learns to get over that insecurity. In the second season, she makes friends with a an Indian Muslim girl (Aneesa) who turns out to be bisexual and has relationships with Ben and Fabiola.
While Mindy Lahiri's family and Indian roots are absent for much of the show, Devi is shown to have a very close Indian family from her mother to her cousin, who becomes like an elder sister, to her grandmother. And in terms of the diversity of their relationships, her cousin has one Chinese and two Indian love interests. Her mother is shown to have had a very loving and supportive marriage with an Indian man and briefly dates a Black colleague after her husband's death.
Listing off all the ethnicities and backgrounds like this makes it seem a bit trivial and even tokenizing, but the show does put in the time to flesh out these characters and relationships over three seasons that makes it feel pretty authentic as far as it's possible in a 30 minute 10 episode comedy series focusing on high school kids. I think it's a very clear response to the Mindy Project being so white.
(I sometimes wonder if the trade-off Mindy had to make for being the lead in a Fox sitcom back in 2012 was to surround herself with mostly white supporting cast. In any case, I don't think there's enough criticism of the big networks and execs who are certainly all white men behind her while she's often the scapegoat in these controversies. Not saying she's perfect or above criticism ofc, just saying we need to be more mindful of the structural problems in this kind of outrage.)
Now, do I think Devi will still ultimately "end up" with the white Jewish boy? Yes, probably, because Mindy seems to love the rivals to lovers trope, but the show itself has spent so much time deconstructing the "mixed-race with a white man" relationship trope and showing lots of other Indian women in a variety of relationships, including outside heterosexuality, that the show won't be sending any harmful messages, even if this is "endgame".
NHIE isn't a perfect show in any sense, but it's mostly very good representation and also a pretty solid high school comedy. The fact that it's getting left out of The Discourse in this current Mindy backlash speaks to the fact that many people aren't criticizing her in good faith.

While I agree that NHIE does probably the best job of addressing that (I haven’t seen the Sex Lives of College Girls) I think it’s more to the point that the self hating Indian trope is present period. And more so that after writing a show like NHIE that shows that type of growth, Mindy has gone on to make shows that fall right back into the same groove. I honestly think it’s even more insidious that Mindy has proven that she “gets it” by writing a show like NHIE but continues to make characters reminiscent of S1 Devi. It reads as NHIE being a way to say some people actually do like being Indian and Velma (and SLOCG from what I’ve heard) saying but *I* hate being Indian.
My comment is less of a critique of the show (which I actually do enjoy) and more a critique on how even in good faith she can’t help but write the nerdy self hating Indian. While Mindy is free to feel how she feels about her culture it’s just sad that she is almost the main South Asian rep and puts down her culture in every project.

Great video! I went into this show actually really excited from the first trailer, specifically because of a “dark” look at the Mystery Inc. gang, but as more stuff started to come out about it, I got pretty on-edge about it. Specifically the art style. An ugly art style can be enough to turn me away COMPLETELY from a show. I started on it and the art was just… wow.. it was really ugly. The whole Shaggy (refuse to call him Norville) almost being a horrible person arc felt really forced, and the writing was, like. REALLY BAD. Like there was a point halfway through the first episode that I was like “is this supposed to be like.. Gravity Falls writing but worse? Like it can’t be for adults… but it also can’t be for kids…” It was just.. honestly horrible. A lot of gore that I feel like was just shock value without going anywhere. The 2nd corpse goes nowhere. The best character was Shaggy and I laughed a good maybe 5 times throughout both episodes and that was because of 1 thing that Fred said, and 3 things that Shaggy said. The Lil’ Wayne stoner line could’ve been so funny if it was executed better, but I felt like it just.. fell really flat. As do a lot of jokes with potential in this show. They have HORRIBLE delivery. The hitler joke felt overplayed and forced to me, and a lot of shit just went nowhere. It’s unfortunate, if it didn’t have the Scooby Doo name attached to it, it could have been another Paradise P.D. like you said.

Why can't they leave original stuff in its original form? Make NEW stuff? This show wouldn't have been as poorly received if it was the Mindy project but animated.

The criticism that Mindy is only interested in white guys is racist af. For GENERATIONS men and women have put their preferences (and some of them even fetishes) on the screen and no one talks about it as being a problem until a brown woman shows her preference. Why is it so problematic for her to have a preference? Why is it okay for a black girl to say she's not attracted to white men but it's not okay for Mindy to show interest in white guys? All I'm trying to say is that this wouldn't even be a point of discussion if it was a man or a white woman. Mindy Kaling has never had a "fall from grace" because even at her damn highest she has constantly been questioned and devalued for her efforts. To this day there are people saying the office would be better off without her character with absolutely no self awareness or realization that Mindy herself wrote many of the jokes that they love so much.
Velma is indeed a flop, but more than that it's an opportunity to knock Mindy Kaling down a peg because she's just had it too good for too long and we can't let a brown woman have that. Look how many catastrophically bad shows are put out there without the names of the people behind them (or who they are attracted to) even being whispered? I saw something similar when Eternals was released. It was a bad movie, but for the first time in MCU history the director was being dragged along with the movie, something that had never happened before in any of these movies. Imagine my surprise when I realized it was a POC woman who directed the movie.
It's embarrassing how we're so willing to partake in this public shaming of POC women while claiming it's for the sake of progress (literally why else would Mindy's sexual preferences be a topic of discussion if not for the fact that her preferences aren't progressive enough?). Mindy sucks, for various reasons ( which is obvious ), so I'll just focus on Velma.
I haven't completely watched Velma, so I suppose I can't say anything too negative.
From the few clips I've seen of it, the writing is the main issue. You are correct, the characters act nothing like the original characters they're supposed to be. The relationship // kiss scene is kind of weird, apparently Velma is having a panic attack, but Daphne decides it's best to just kiss her? The relationship could have worked out, but they needed to flesh it out, this romance just felt so rushed // forced, for no reason at all.
All in all, Velma's quite terrible, and I suppose Mindy's just gotten more annoying.

Well I think Bella's story and personality is kind of based on her.
Race swapped… but Fred is still white and Shaggy, the stoner, is the black man. I found that counterproductive. And Velma, the less desirable/attractive female of the bunch by western standards, is now a lesbian. Such an obnoxious trope for the unwanted female, but now make her a woman of color and it’s even more out of touch with what being subversive and actually doing these characters justice means.
I think Mindy is being held to this standard in part because she is South Asian. White TV female creators like Amy Sherman Pallidino make the same main characters over and over again and that is not the reason she gets critiqued.
I see south Asian women say they would look the other way if mindys characters weren’t so self hating and always talking shit about south Asian women and their looks.

@@phil6748 This was a valid criticism after her first show, The Mindy Project, but since then she's written Never Have I Ever and Sex Lives of College Girls, where the show either completely avoids the self-hating Indian trope or has characters arcs where they unlearn the internalised racism and become more secure as people. So it's not really fair to apply this criticism generally across all her work anymore.
Furthermore, the difficulty with being a creator from a marginalized community is that you want to represent the group but also be authentic and that can mean mining one's own experiences. Mindy probably experienced a lot of self-hatred growing up in a primarily white part of the country through school and college especially in the 80s and 90s. Stereotypes can be stereotypes for a reason, you just have to approach them with some nuance. She also seems to enjoy writing complicated women who aren't perfect or even entirely likeable and you get to see them grow into themselves over the show. It's totally valid for her to want to write that into her characters. Some would call this "bad" representation. I wouldn't normally agree, but if she's the only female South Asian showrunner, it might feel that way.
The _solution_ is to have more women of colour create shows so they can all write the different types of characters they each want. It's not really fair to expect one person to be able to represent the varied experiences of South Asian women across generations. Like, I'm not saying she's not worthy of criticism, but I think we need to be careful that we don't set harsher standards for woc (than for white men and women) who are already starting at a disadvantage in this industry.

Bad representation is a fair critique, but "she only dates white guys!" is a weird complaint when quite a few white female characters in shows also date mostly white guys. It feels like the arbitrary internet discourse hates her rn so now everything questionable or odd is fodder for problematizing her.
This doesn't mean that there isn't perfectly fair criticism to be had (I've definitely heard a lot about The Mindy Project semi-endorsing anti-Indian sentiment with Mindy the character's self-hate that is never deconstructed by the show), but it mixing with personal attacks like that give the feeling of trying to perpetuate a cycle of negativity towards someone, not productive conversation

I don't think Velma was a good show at all (I watched it all btw), but I really hate Mindy for admitting she kissed Lee Pace after a scene and laughing about how he was uncomfortable with it and how he freaked out because of her just kidding him out of the blue. She pretty much laughed about forcing a guy to kiss her and when he got upset, she had a "suck it up buttercup". Like that the f-ck?? Who would joke about that?? I think it's a little unfair to frame her brother's racist actions as one of Kaling's flaws. She has some problems, obviously, and I've never been a fan, but that's not really on her.
Thanks for bringing up this topic, I subscribed to you because issues like this have bothered me for quite a while. Not just because of Mindy but a lot of diverse celebrities that should do more in representing their respective communities better.
However, in Mindy Kaling's case she's shown that she's got some extreme racial and gender bias against Indian men, internalized hate that clearly runs in even her own family. Especially since her brother ended up pretending to be an entirely different ethnicity because he has a problem with his own. If Mindy actually gave a damn about indian men she would have no qualms about featuring some in main roles and even having an interracial relationship that shows an indian male with someone of different ethnicity. However, she never does, she only features the opposite in her projects.
Instead she only ever showed indian girls paired up with white males, as if any other ethnicity of black, brown or asian doesn't matter. Neither does she ever feature any indian male as one of the main characters....
All crap like this does is break the self-esteem of indian guys like myself, trying to make us feel as we don't belong in western society and are inferior, and also showing audiences that women of our own race don't want anything to do with us.
It's a poor representation and Mindy was one of the very first prominent indian celebrities we had in western entertainment. One that had social platform to represent all of us Indians, regardless of gender and pull us all into the spotlight with her work; but she never did.
