    I got a 64 SS409 with single four barrel and 400 hp, and it came with a spare set of tires. Good thing, as I used up two tires on a 30 day leave. The thing was a beast, I never did but one burn out with the car, and spun a tire off a rim. Any "racing" I did, was rolling start at the crosswalk on the far side of a stop light, so you didn't stress gears or tires, or attract attention with tire squeal, or the possibility of an accident from the standing start. Wishing I had that one back again.

    I always thought 1963 was one of Chevrolet's finest years with top notch exterior styling and an upgraded interior trim level. The goodies mentioned in the video are more than icing on the cake.

    My old neighbor had one of these that was beige. 1963 SS unrestored, just over 1000 mile on it. 2nd owner of car, bought from original owner who picked it up from the factory and drove it to his car museum in GA. Still had quality control stickers on the windows. Can't imagine what that car would be worth now!

    Back in these(good ol' days) days, as in the fifties and prior years, cars changed from year to year COMPLETELY. This includes all the sheet metal, interior design, DASH design...EVERYTHING! I still remember back in these days riding my bicycle to the local Chevrolet dealership, where they drove the new cars into the showroom and had the sheets over the windows so no one could peek in and see the new models! Those were the last days I'll always fondly remember.

    I had a Red '62 Impala SS 409 dual quad 4spd car with 411 gears and HP heads. It had no PS (ordered that way) and actually had factory exhaust "dump tubes" you could unscrew for going to the track. (This was back in '69 while in High School). It passed everything on the road, EXCEPT THE GAS STATIONS! ;-) HORRIBLE GAS MILEAGE, but a pretty cool car for cruising. And that was back when high octane "Ethyl" gas was only 49.9/gal for Chevron Custom Supreme (gold label) gas. How I'd LOVE to have it back again!!

    • @jamesmcleod5545

    • @bobbysolo5411
      @bobbysolo5411 5 років тому

      @@jamesmcleod5545 I fed mine with 37c a gallon gas and 5 times blue chip stamps. It was a good time to own a gas hog, and I had to gas mine 4 times from the Bay Area to Camp Pendleton. That's 88 gallons, with 22 at the start, 110 gallons to go 500 miles. But it could pass anything but a gas station, up to 110 mph, and hit the plateau there. I raced a lot of Dodge RTs and such and beat them all, unless you were on a freeway and willing to go to the limit top end and risk losing your license and car and freedom. If I'm in fourth gear and 5 car gap, it's OVER, I'm not racing an enduro race. Back to the speed limit and next challenger at the next light.

    I really like this one. It's got all the right stuff. I'd like to have a '64 with all the same things that this one has. And a '64 Impala with all this may even be more of a rarity because in '64 the were a lot less Impalas built with 409s and 300 horse 327s than there were in '63. Unfortunately there weren't much more than half the amount of each of the 3 409s or 300HP small blocks total put in Impalas in '64 that there were in '63. In '64 the Impala SS was more advertised to be a luxury car and more were made with factory A/C, and/or even fully optioned out with more creature comforts (like power everything).

      The guy that sold mine to me told me it was a dealer car and pretty much used to test drive buyers who would then be sold a 283 and powerglide rendition of the car, leaving them wonder where the power went. He said there were 250 built of the SS409, with single 4 barrel and factory tach, chrome engine parts, air cleaner, oil filler and dipstick, and valve covers, as well as reverb, and rear speaker.

    Engine turning is a machining process which makes small swirl marks in a metal panel such as stainless steel or aluminum, was used on SS models both Impala and Novas, and later on Trans Am,s. Hard to see in this video, but can be seen slightly on the dash panel, console and rear quarter trim with Impala script.

    Can't push it hard since it has a split drive shaft. I had an '63 Impala SS 409 and I went through a few carrier bearings/supports as well as a twisted the driveshaft off the UJoint. It is fast but not good for drag or fast pop starts. Loved watching this video since that is what I wanted my car to be like. Mine did not have the built in Tach. I had a Hurst his/hers floor shift. Automatic.

    The best part of these cars was the large back seat, great for making out with your girl friend. I owned 2, 1964 SS's and 1 '67 SS 427. They were basically un-drivable in NY snow. It was all over for the Impala when the Chevelle & Camaro hit the streets. A Super-Bee running a 440 cu in Six Pack would walk away from this one. Been there.

    The biggest detail I miss is the push out window vents in the doors ,I miss the style and I miss the cool air those vents generate where you just roast in modern cars unless your sealed up right with the air on ,and that's a huge disconnect from driving for me ,I read hot rod magazine in Vietnam where they wrote up the AMX as the fastest car of 1969 and they nicknamed it the corvette killer ,that's all I thought about my final tour and when I made it to Detroit I ordered the 1969 AMX with the 390 big block and dual quad Go Package, I still have the car to this day along with a brand new 390 crate motor for the car but the 1 thing the AMX Is missing is push out vent windows .

    • @bobbysolo5411
      @bobbysolo5411 5 років тому

      @@hammered0184 I think it was because this was born as a sleeper, so didn't have the "jeweled" trim. It was important on mine, as it was a deep "cobalt blue", which looked black with blue hints, unless in bright sunlight. The trim woke it up and broke it up, sort of like the two tones of the fifties would break the color. My 409 was muffled with two huge mufflers that make it sound pretty domestic, but large, so they performed as well.

    • @bobbysolo5411
      @bobbysolo5411 5 років тому

      @@michaelt.lichtenfeld3218 I'd almost say the swirls were part of the SS package. The side badge SS 409, over the checkered flags, was pretty eye catching apparently, as I had several people comment on it at lights. One chided it as the car was just stock appearing with rims matching the car, and baby moons. They challenged me and learned it had a horse under it.

    If anyone says they have a dual 4 barrel 409 with an automatic,they are liars.Chevrolet never put an automatic behind the dual barrel 409s,anything with a dual carb set had a manual transmission behind it only.You pay dearly for 409 exhaust manifolds,my father paid a grand for a set of 409 exhaust manifolds.

    • @ammobank
      @ammobank 5 років тому

      Doesn't mean they couldn't replace the manifold with a dual. Just saying. Mine was a replaced Auto Transmission with a floor shift. Single 4 Barrel. I had a six pack manifold to put on it when the tranny blew a seal, no reverse and my life took a good turn, a very good turn, sold the car as is for $400 to get it out of my parents driveway. Back in "75-76 Got saved! Had a few tickets but the worse one was I had to take my Thrush Mufflers off to put stock mufflers on. How does that work with headers? LOL Didn't take long to take them off. Went with side pipes. Cops wanted me out even though I always treated them with respect. The word did get around. They called my car the "Toilet Bowl". LOL

    • @bobbysolo5411
      @bobbysolo5411 5 років тому

      The 409 had a space issue in the engine bay, so the exhaust manifolds had to be just so, to fit. They were said to be restrictive, and I'd agree, given the response of the engine in this video, and the response of my 409, I'd agree. Mine was stock manifolds and having worked on the starter, you pretty much remove the engine to do so, with the manifolds sort of being a "mid process" step, removing them after lifting the engine up some. LOTs of hands. We lifted it out with a swing set and chain fall, tore it down and replaced a piston, put it back together and eventually traded it off to my brother in law. I can't even find him now to learn where the car ended up.

    it's a beautiful car, esp the original black paint - not common in those days. that said, why is it sitting so high? & not to nitpick or anything, but the front bumper isn't straight (from side-view shown in clip) & the rear chrome insert around tailights does't look right. maybe it's the camera/lighting/etc., but a comment on these things in your dialogue would be useful.

    You're not gonna give a price? Any 409 would sound sweeter opened up than the quickie you demo'd here -- I remember! If it's not stock, it's no good to me.
