    This game is great, I finished it a while ago and the cop-thing is one aspect of it. But to me it was more of an introspective exploration of a broken shell of a man dealing with depression in a variety of ways, and that was the part of the narrative that got me hooked on it as it is something very relatable to me.

If you fail the skill check to lie convincingly, you end up telling him you're Detective Raphael Ambrosius Costeau. While this game has some really cool systems and ideas, I don't know why they even bother with the focus on politics when you will be slapped on the wrist like a naughty child for selecting any dialogue option that does not align with the developer's opinions, in the rare occasions when any contrary stance to their desired choice does not require you to roleplay as a silly caricature of that stance which was clearly constructed by someone who does not understand it. All of the detective stuff is fun, but that takes a backseat pretty quickly

  • @KiNETiKpoWerZ

    For the first time in a long time I have to disagree with Mack on this one even if I understand some of this games merits. I would NOT recommend this for a so called "open-ended RPG" Here's my personal Steam review.
    Despite an interesting and engaging opener, some comedic humor and mechanics that are arguably in depth and unique(ish?) to other RPGs, I would NOT classify this as a TRUE fully open ended RPG as it is so often touted and also not a great one for escapism from the real world. I will explain exactly why. The positives of this are at this point well known and often repeated by others in other reviews so I won't repeat them myself and agree with most of them which makes it all the much more of a shame for me to recommend against it. So what are the negatives?
    -The first is that there is just an EXCESSIVE amount of filler dialogue and text to go through and one will inevitably skip it if they have a life and job outside of videogames as the time sink for just that alone can be utterly brutal. It's not just dialogue but FILLER dialogue as well and some of which is just circular word salad for the sake of appearing intellectual when it really isn't, and in fact is a bit pretentious. I'm not against an engaging thought provoking story but much of this leads me to believe that the writer/s seem to be trying (and failing) to come off as so much smarter and holier then thou but anyone can use big words and interject needless and excessive snails-pace self-important college professor commentary when the point can be made much more succinctly. And much of the dialogue is often personally biased (not for the characters but the writers themselves) which leads into my next complaint.
    -Another (and perhaps the most egregious) flaw here is the forceful nature of injecting the writers personal closed-minded politics into a so called 'open-ended RPG' game touting freedom of choice. I won't get into what side they are very clearly skewed to but at one point you are forced to do a quest for someone with hard-line politics that the player may disagree with. If you do anything to a different side you are forced to be metaphorically crippled and have less to work with for the remainder of the game and labeled as bad or wrongthink not just by characters but also by the game itself. It does feel at times as if it's forcing an agenda down the players throat. Regardless of what political alignment you fall on this is a negative for this kind of game. You cannot truly be exactly the type of character you want to be in this.
    -The third complaint I have which may be arguably more minor but still a factor in my opinion is the dour and depressing atmosphere, lack of variety in set pieces and tone, and the game sticking to only one particular setting and theme which can get old at times in combination with all the filler and political nonsense.
    In conclusion, the sad thing is that I very much WOULD like to have a game which does have the positive and engaging and unique aspects that this one has perhaps with a different theme and setting (the cop/detective theme is cool for a bit but I'm more into fantasy type stuff for RPGs maybe with more combat as well to spice it up) and obviously without the negatives I described above. If you took out all the filler and politics and left in the humor and player choice it would be miles better but then there would be barely any of the game left at that point. I feel this is EXTREMELY overrated and cannot recommend it despite it's recent popularity. Overall a disappointment.

      Totally agree, when i heard the final version has fully voice acting and everyone saying masterpiece i just bought it, man.. i just could not understand what everyone was saying, this game is just like a psychedelic post communist book for depressed people or something, its not fun or even on point with the objective of the game itself, i dare to say that what people saw in this game is in a format that resembles what there where waiting for without knowing and that every filler text is readable.

      @Woodsie_Lord 2 роки тому +3

      no combat = not rpg (if you know evolution of that genre and what it represents not just because how its called)(its also substantially limiting your role play)
      Also terrible railroading at the end with choosing from 3 places to investigate and possibility of skipping whole "fight" and hidden character not to mention all the choices game presumably has that don't matter much. I was clicking everything, did every mission playing blind and didn't really see anything changing much including part where fat pig expected that pc will tell something boat lady and she will sail off so I checked what would happen if I didn't tell her anything (and by that not finishing some side quest I think) and nothing changed... nothing substanial at least. This game is so good that I don't remember much from all political plot.
      At least it's non intenionally funny. I mean dellusional way the devs think.
      To sum up their propaganda: If you disagree with me you are a fascist in my game and thats the only way you can disagree.
      One of the dumbest things is black racist(in completely retarded way the devs think) dude defending a switch to the doors I got through from the other side on a first day...
      It looked like there was some passage further behind him but no...
      Lots of filler as mentioned before and illusions of choice like in many "CHOICE MATTERS" games nowdays.

      You should have just skipped this entire block of nonsense and used this sentence
      'the cop/detective theme is cool for a bit but I'm more into fantasy type stuff for RPGs maybe with more combat as well to spice it up).'
      It renders your entire biased 'review' useless.
      I could pick holes in your 'review' for hours, but will leave my last comment to laugh at this
      "I'm not against an engaging thought provoking story but much of this leads me to believe that the writer/s seem to be trying (and failing) to come off as so much smarter and holier then thou but anyone can use big words and interject needless and excessive snails-pace self-important college professor commentary when the point can be made much more succinctly"

It’s more like a sandbox playground for you to be a caricature of what you wish to be. It wasn’t for me either. I like games where I care about my character and the world I’m in. I'd say it's a game for someone who does/had read a lot. Certainly doesn't block others, it's funny as hell. Very clever for a wide release so glad to support it.

    I don't know about the rest of the players and it's probably dependent on how much you played but I get the distinct vibe of a developer trying to promote Communist and Socialist ideals here and then berating you for not agreeing with them. Yes the murder mystery is interesting to a point and the side content is much more enjoyable than the main story but it's that constant hammering of a political ideology then penalizing for not agreeing that I couldn't shake. They even try to squeeze in Climate Change into this dialogue!
    If it was trying to recreate the cancel culture we are currently living then it succeeded but it didn't need to be quite so preachy and certainly not so much to make you feel like there was only ever going to be one way through this game.

Still though, props to the developer as we need games like this to keep things in check, or at least hopefully shed some influence on other studios to make games this deep

      @@vladdracul2379 haha the good old smartphone arguement, ever reliable. Being connected to the internet is not some luxury, it has become a necessity of everyday life. I might be a hypocrite to buy diamonds mined by children but they're not a necessity in the modern world. Capitalism didn't make phones anyway, labour did (and several state funded research grants, such as in the developmental stage of Apple). Abolishonists might have worn cotton picked by slaves, doesn't invalidate the arguement against the system that produced it. When did the developers praise Marx anyway? They merely included *fictional* people that did, much like the *fictional* fascists, racists and liberals you also find in the game. What a silly comment.

    • @vladdracul2379

      Only a smooth brain thinks labor is all it took to make your phone. Did the laborer put together all the electrical components themselves? Did they go and get all the raw materials needed themselves? Did they go mine and grow the materials themselves? No. Capitalism gave people the opportunity to utilize the labor of many different people to create a new product that otherwise would have been too cumbersome for a laborer to make from start to finish. I also guarantee that you go to a grocery store for food. You didn't grow that so why are you taking it? Because Capitalism allows the exchange of goods and services that people cannot do themselves.

    • @mothman5025
      @mothman5025 3 роки тому +3

      @@vladdracul2379 I never said labour *alone* produced the iphone, you're just being willfully ignorant of what I'm saying now. The research, planning and technology utilised by companies such as Apple was state funded. All of which you are describing would not have been possible without state interest. The glorious free market cannot claim sole responsibility for its production and its incredibly intellectually dishonest to say so. Also that's an interesting way to gloss over the exploitation of resources and cheap labour in 3rd world countries for our own self benefit. It doesn't provide any 'opportunity', just exploitation at the benefit of the wealthy in an already stacked game. Also have you ever heard of a co-operative? Capitalism doesn't have a monopoly on groceries lmao. No examples you have used arose because of the pure, profit-motivated capitalism you seem to hold in such idealistic regard. It's a failing economic system, the benefactors of which will be dead in 30 years leaving us with its ruins. Don't do their work for them.

Then exclaim, when called out giving a good game a bad review, "it's just an opinion". A true professional reviewer, worth their salt, will be able to tell if a game is good or not regardless of their personal opinion of whether they enjoyed the game or not.(Dan Simpleton's um i mean Stapleton's review of Prey is a prime example of what not to do, and he is a paid "professional" giving out personal opinions).
