    I got so much out of this video, it really resonated with me. Ant and i are the same age and years surfing and i have built my quiver based around the short fat groveler to go fast in a straight line. Here on the south coast UK the waves are typically small and weak, and i have used this as the justification for the groveler heavy quiver., but i think i may need to rethink things a little. Thanks for the food for thought guys, great channel!

    After watching this video Ive realized one of my biggest mistakes as a "DIY, self taught/coached, go at it alone surfer" is when it comes to building my quiver I've made some really bad board decisions that seriously hampered my surfing. If I had to do it over again I'd develop a relationship with a shaper (though this looks like coach+shaper in one? not familiar with the channel) and put my trust in their knowledge and assessment- not the marketing blurb, what my friends/internet says, etc. There is something to be said about the 'cohesiveness' of this quiver...

    • @ombesurf
      @ombesurf  3 роки тому

      Thanks for your comment and honesty. A relationship with a shaper is important but further than that is the knowledge you possess. Being able to assess conditions and pick the most appropriate piece of equipment is the ultimate goal.

    Such an eye opener, epic content every intermediate thinks that a better board will fix their problems but as it is in life work on yourself then the equipment will do the talking for you...

    • @mrwardy7
      @mrwardy7 3 роки тому

      Well a different board is often the answer.... Better might be the wrong word, depends on the waves or style of surf you're trying to achieve. Ant himself said he would have to hang up the board he shaped himself, that was his go to board, and now he realises that with his new found skills it's holding him back.

    • @eddewes8409
      @eddewes8409 3 роки тому +2

      @@mrwardy7 I have 6 boards haha 3 midlengths, 2 funboards, and a shortboard I had board aquisition syndrome and thought if i get a short seaside or some type of fish that my surfing would improve thats why this video spoke to me now I know what board to use in what condition and where to position myself with my shortboard etc I catch waves easy enough I realize I have to now improve my technique before I buy another board...

    • @mrwardy7
      @mrwardy7 3 роки тому +1

      Yea I hear you mate. There is so many variables though isn't there? .... A new board can make a big difference as you are improving from a beginner level.... I learned on a 45litre fun board..... Eventually bought a 36litre superbrand fling.... Love it and I caught so many more waves, but now feel like that's got too much volume for me, I have since bought a 33litre LSD noa, and it has improved my surfing a lot because of the lower litres making it more maneuverable. I have just picked up a superbrand black viper 31L, yet to ride it, but looking forward to seeing how that feels. Variety is the spice of life 😁🤙

    Ive been surfing for nearly 30yrs and started on an 8'0" mal with thruster fins and after a couple of years and being able to surf the mal pretty well(starting to do floaters / roundhouses ) i felt i needed a smaller more manouverable board to progress my surfing, i found that the right board seemed to appear and i could get it,(i gota 7'2" like a big shortboard) after that boards always seemed to turn up at the right time for me i never had to go looking..wierd! I now have 6 boards from 6'2" fish up to 7'2" gun but still love to ride the 8'0"mal as it was the board that taught me to surf with style and flow and to do smooth turns, i think the worst thing to do is try and learn to surf on a board under 7' 🤙

    Couple of questions…
    1. Why does Ant not have or use a traditional thruster with a squash tail? Why the two variations of the same model as a quad with a swallow and round tail?
    2. Seems like you’re pushing him away from the groveler. Is this because it’s really not totally necessary once you can shortboard in the mush? Does a groveler kinda hold you back?
    3. I’m about the same size as Ant and was shocked to hear his normal volume is 32. Is this a pretty normal range you’d suggest for 185 cm and 86k, or does he ride lower than normal?
    Yewww, love the video

    How do you know when a 7/8ft foamie hire board is holding you back? And what should you think about changing to? I am very much a beginner, but because I am trying to catch green waves, perhaps I need a different board? However on the beach I surf at in Scotland, 80% of the time it is small waves... :(

    I'm guessing Clayton made you boards to assist your development.. one to generate speed down the line, one to draw out your turns and small wave board. It seems as Ant has improved the width in the tail needs to be reduced to improve maneuverability and rail turns

    So funny you were talking about how you went about getting your first board and it was exactly how I did. I even watched the same guys reviews
    Then you said "and I got a lost puddle jumper hp"
    I almost lost it. I did the exact same thing. I knew I wasn't good enough to ride it, But I learned. It's a killer board, but not easy to learn on.

    • @aaronjosephs6233
      @aaronjosephs6233 Рік тому

      I don't think that was the point they were making. The point they were making was that the puddle jumper HP is a fat wide board and encourages the surfer to surf out on the shoulder instead of in the pocket. That being said I have a puddle jumper HP haha, but I'm hesitant to ride another board since a lot of the time I'm at very crowded breaks with tons of longboarders and it's already difficult enough to compete with them even on the PJHP

    • @ombesurf
      @ombesurf  3 роки тому

      Hey Samuel, I'd say theres not such a thing as something good or bad when it comes to what you feel in the water. There are a lot of factors to take into consideration. Are you actually an intermediate surfer? What kind of waves are you surfing? What would you like to achieve? There's more than picking 'the right' board. I'd suggest to go here-> ombe.co/courses/surfing-analysis/ and assess your surfing. This could be very beneficial for you.
