The point was not every body's Christmas was perfect and rosy ..Some people had a rough or lonely time ...but stayed together through it all anyway ...
This is pure poetry. It's the tale of a homeless alcoholic and a dying drug riddled prostitue. The insults in the second verse are really protestations of love using the language of the streets, THEIR language ( like you insult your best pal) but they truly love one another, it's beautiful ❤❤❤❤
On3 of the all time great Christmas songs - at its heart there sits this idea that if someone is an alcoholic or an addict they live in a very dark world even at Christmas and people with severe problems can be incredibly cruel and unpleasant to other people. Beneath the jaunty almost party feel to the instruments there is a harsh reality and that is one of the reasons why it has remained so popular here in the UK - no syrupy Hollywood Christmas but the bleakness of human nature. To me it is wonderful.
This is one of three Christmas songs I never get tired of hearing. The other two are Father Christmas by the Kinks and Christmas Wrapping by the Waitresses. I like this song for the cheerful sounding music combined with the gritty real life lyrics. Plus the vocal performances are great too. We lost a lot when Kirsty MacColl was killed so young.
I think she died in a Water Ski-ing Accident. Christmas Wrapping is like a novelty song by a couple of Aussie girls. Love the Kinks I must have heard every song of theirs.
I wish younger generation reactors would see things in context and understand poetic expression in full range rather than kneejerk reactions to anything provocative or edgy. Things back then had meaning and were done with wit and class. Why is so much hypersexualisation, violence and misogyny allowed in today's videos and music - and at the same time so much suppression and cancel culture in the mentality ?
Yep, very emotionally shallow reaction, but they are still children, or appear to be. They most likely haven't yet been exposed to life's more devastating hard knocks and had to open their hearts to others' less 'perfect' lives. Compassion and depth of character usually take a bit of age to develop... and for some of course, it never happens.
Current musical obsession atm is the album "Odessey and Oracle" by the 1960s UK group , The Zombies. Away from this , please check out Kirsty MacColl , the female singer on the track...a good place to start would be " A New England" , "Working Down Madison" or the wonderfully titled "There's a guy Works down the Chip Shop swears he's Elvis".
@@FreyaNorman-pb7jj , l did not mention The Cranberries , who wrote a song called Zombie...l was talking about the GROUP , The Zombies ... Alicia in the video had asked to record our recent obsession and mine is the album "Odessey and Oracle"... definitely not Irish.
Interesting tune. I hope you listen to the Drifters version of White Christmas. It's a tune that will make you smile Clyde Mcphatter's voice shines in this song All the best to you both
As far as I'm concerned Christmas isn't Christmas until this song is played. Both Shane and Kirsty sadly no longer with us.
Irish song at its finest 🇮🇪 RIP Shane and Kirsty
Basically the top Xmas song in the UK and Ireland
Slade's and Wizzard's Xmas songs are more popular.
and New Zealand
In my view (and many others it seems), this is the best Christmas song ever written.

The Pogues are from London, but they're all ethnic Irish.
Totally
Funny that she thought it was old because it was in black and white.
The most popular Christmas song in the U.K. and has been for many years.
Sometimes black & white is just an artistic choice! ❤
Best Christmas song ever. Huge in Canada.

My favourite Christmas song ever. My goodness girl, B&W was a choice.
Times were better then, best Christmas song ever, legendary
It’s great to see you guys reviewing together again. Merry Christmas!
Big Love
This song is the number 1 xmas song in the UK, my husband detests it, I love it, especially when its on in my local pub and everyone sings along
It was recorded in the 80s but was meant to be set a lot earlier. Possibly the 50s.

Shane MacGowan had the same girlfriend for 30+ years - before he eventually married her.
The greatest Christmas Song ever.
They likely chose to shoot in black and white because it is cheaper when using film. It also gives it a classic look and cigarette smoke looks cool.

Sorry, she is not she, she is / was Kirsty MacColl. One of the best.
The only Christmas song I love.
Yes and yes! 👍👍
RIP Shane & Kirsty MacColl. If you are taking Christmas requests 'Step into Christmas' by Elton John.
This is never mentioned in top 10 songs of all time and it should. Its always top 3 Christmas songs, its genius. Shane Mcgowan died last year.

The cranberries were not a UK group they were Irish.
Kirsty MacColl - a huge talent, humble, not interested in fame just the music - & greatly missed. As is Shane MacGowan.

@kennethdallas8541 oh sorry I got confused 😅

Perennial fave.
Not for me, but I am glad so many others enjoy it! I love all of the variety on this channel!
Decent reaction - but expand your musical landscape.
❤️👍🏽👍☘️
As this girl being living under a rock????
Xmas institution in the UK.
Spoilsport time - it isn't a song about Christmas
It's a Christmas song in the same way that Die Hard is a Christmas movie.
Just like Paddington isn't about a talking bear.
With that obsession, should Alivia be taking a pregnancy test?
That was different.
Don't think it will make my list of Christmas songs.
I guess you`re in the minority. This song is most peoples favourite Christmas song in Ireland and UK. Has over 100 million views on UA-cam.
Sorry for your lack of good taste. Is there a medical procedure that could help you?
