    I've always loved the RE20. It sounded great here too. I was very pleasantly surprised by the D112. The ND mics (which I've never heard of before) were awesome! I particularly like the 46. It basically sounds like what I usually try to get out of a floor tom... by the time it gets to the mix I find myself wanting to roll off some of that big low end mics like the ND44 and RE20 pick up. Great video!

      Thanks, i was more partial to the 44, I like more of that rumble. The 408 was a nice surprise as well.

    I like very much the Sennheiser 421 on rack and floor toms, the audix d2 on rack toms, the shure beta 98 and also the ev nd44 and nd46 with a preference in this case for the 44, a few years ago I had to work with an ev mic called " egg" maybe the nd 468? and it was very plaisant to work with.

      Biggest issue w the 421 is the size. Everything else you mentioned is nice and small. The 468 is a great little mic. They call it the egg not just because of looks, it was king of delicate as well. We have one here along w the 408 and 308. (All are almost the same mic, slight variations). They can get damaged pretty easily. Thanks for checkin out the video!

    Surprised the Sennheiser 604 and 904 weren’t included. Both are great on all toms and other sources. I own several 604s and several ND44s. I like them both on toms but they are different. If I have the time (I am mostly a live sound engineer) I’ll try both and pick my favorite.

      This vid was just between the Electro voice mics. I plan on doing a separate rack tom video to cross brands in a bigger shoot out. Thanks for watching!!

    I'm considering getting some tom mics - I was looking at the Audio-Technica ATM350 - but now I'm thinking of a pair of Electro-Voice ND44 for the 2 rack toms - I already have a MD421 for the floor tom - - did anyone try the ATM350?

      I havent gotten around to a lot of the AT stuff. Their catalog is just overwhelming. Thanks for checking it out. Depending on budget for toms, the new 421 kompakt wasnt bad on rack toms and the telefunken M81_SH are quite good. Thanks for checkin it out!

      @@meistudiony As I'm going to be recording reggae drums, I see Harry J's studio in JA still sometimes uses SM58's on toms - I'm told Kings-X too (whoever they are?) I do have a new MD441 though - (using it to drive a guitar pedal vocal FX chain - who need's plugins? ) I'm probably going to buy a pair of e904 mics for the rack toms - work with that - I'm loving your channel, nice and deep insights into the mics

    Has anyone used a ND46 for live concert vocals? I'm a drummer and singer, and I want minimal bleed of the drum sound into the vocal mic. The ND96 is rated as very good for this function. But I prefer a mic with a straight out 90 degree for the XLR cable (takes up less space in front of my face where my sticks fly around). Anyone with experience comparing the ND96 with the ND46 for vocals?

    • @meistudiony
      @meistudiony  11 місяців тому

      The 46 is kind of a chonky mic. Soundwise, the 44 and 46 arent too far off. The 44 may be easier size wise in that siutation. Ill ask my session guy what he uses live. (probably an sm58 or beta58 but ill check).

    Excellent comparison and agree with your analysis. That OD5 really sounds strange, almost like it's pointed completely off-axis in this recording. Might be worth opening it up to see if the internal shockmount as damaged, or at least comparing to another example. Loved the sound of the D112 and the ND44/46 on the tom.

    • @meistudiony
      @meistudiony  Рік тому +1

      Thanks for checking out the video. The OD5 has been an oddball (no pun intended... or is there?) from day one. The concept is cool, i'm not 100% on the execution though. That is a good suggestion, perhaps ill take a look inside tonight to see if anything happened on its vast journey from wherever it was made to the US.

    Hi I really enjoyed this video... I haven't seen anyone touch this topic in such detail..Thanks...!
    I record on a large kit with 17 mics... I am pretty much satisfied with every mic except my largest floor tom which is an 18x16... I am using audix d4 on 16 and 18 floors... I am satisfied with the body and attack of the tone but I feel that I am loosing some low end on the 18" floor tom... I have tried some kick mics on that and although I got a little more low end, but totally missed the full body tone of the d4 and there was too much artificial attack to make any wise desicion on the low end with the ears... Any input on my concern? Thanks again...

    • @meistudiony

      So on bigger floor toms (bigger than 16) i've used the usual suspects, Beta52, D112, D12, re20, but it all depends on genre. If you're going for metal or hard rock, the Audix d6 has that crazy scoop which kind of carves out that honk mid range that i wind up cutting anyway... I have to say though, I recently picked up the big brother of these two mics, the ND68 and I'm very eager to try it out on larger floor toms. If you're going for something lighter, the vintage D12 and the Beta52 do nicelly for that REALLY deep tone. If you want more of that body sound, the RE20 has never done me wrong on just about any size floor tom.
      The older ND lines actually sound REALLY good on floors as well. The 408 (in this video) sounded really nice to me, and we just picked up a MINT 468 which, dare I say, sounds even better. (havent done a video on it yet)
      Our session drummer is a DW artist and has a ridiculous collection of drums. It's my intention to take as many sizes of drums as I can and start cataloging how all of these mics sound on some really good quality, well tuned drums.
      I'll be doing a kick drum comparison soon with a whole slew of mics current and vintage. Thanks for watching!

      Thanks for checkin it out. Jury is still out for me, but I lean heavily towards the 44 as well. For some reason the smaller mic had more bottom end and it fits into tight spaces better as well.

    I own an ND46 and regret not buying a few ND44s for drums. They were very available and could be found super inexpensive just after they were released. They have not seemed to get much attention in the now overcrowded drum mic market.

    • @meistudiony
      @meistudiony  Рік тому

      i REALLY like the 44's on toms. For a smaller mic (diaphragm is the SAME as the 46) the bottom end was a touch fuller and it grabbed the floor tom for me in a better way than the 46... Not to say the 46 doesnt sound good. After getting these we had picked up the ND68 to see how that would fly on floor and kick... working on the kick video this weekend. Thanks for watching!

    To my ears, it's the Austrian Audio OC7 - and it's not even close. Plus they're great at rejecting the rest of the kit.
