    Hi Barrie 👋 I am beginning to think that I should be heritage listed because I have wonderful memories of the Red Rattlers, and I have been around for the introduction of every set since the 1950's with the most memorable being the introduction of the double deck cars. 😂.
    W3 has the original double deck cars in the set, and hopefully, we will see it operating soon in the heritage runs. Fantastic video, well done Barrie 👏 👍

    Some good memories there Barrie, you didn't mention the poor old "S" sets, I remember in the Shirley era they painted some of the sets blue and white. I wonder if they managed so save a red rattler Parcel Van and preserve it in operating condition? Nice work...

      On the subject of those Red Ratler Parce Vans l worked for a company that sent all its small roof Parts by Train from Sutherland, Sutherland had a small despatch Shed in the Railyards at the Loftus end.
      It was a very quick reliable service, this was in the 1960's all stations at the time could handle parcels for despatch by Red Rattle converted carriages
      Those little Brick sheds you see on many suburban Sydney stations were the Goods despatch Sheds and every Station Platform had a Metal Scale for determining your Parcel Weight
      And Yes I remember those light Bue and White Carriages

      @@graemekeeley4497 "Trackfast" had small sheds at most locations in the suburban network, also known as "Blue Spot Parcels" too I think.

      @@trainspottingwithbarrie I guess the fresh air from the open windows would be a novelty now haha. My dad actually worked for SRA back when the Tangara launched and I remember it was a huge deal!

    I got on a red rattler at Liverpool Station and sat in the front part. There was what I thought was a pool of milk on the floor. By the time the train got to Fairfield the milk had melted. It was ice from rain, the windows having been left open overnight.

    Hi, i recall the red rattlers when i started high school 1970.
    The most common was the single level, with the louver windows and the large black luggage racks above the window - doors were manual slide , often kept open especially in summer or peak hour. - I have witnessed probably 20-30 briefcases being lost from either being on the floor or passengers squashed in to the point of overhanging - 2 or 3 gentlemen were treated as the next station for sprained wrists
    Double deckers came in later and i remember my first few rides in the silver double decker - thick vinyl seats that resembled tarps and every 2nd or 3rd seat was slashed and had the typical sew patch
    I believe seat material would be a entire video of its own, plus many seats you cannot swing the backrest so you always face forward

      I love this memory George, thanks for sharing. I never did see anything lost out of open doors myself, only rubbish and cigarette packets, so this is a great story. You are right about the seat material, it sure changed over the years to keep up with the vandals. Thanks for sharing.

      Hey OldAusieAds, you win the prize. It is Set K40 which is a Cset. After looking for footage from my archives for a k set, this was as close as I could get after an hour of looking at raw footage. Thanks for spotting it. 👍

    Did I see some Tulloch trailers? I do vaguely remember single-deck red rattlers mixed with the double-decked Tulloch cars.
    The Tangaras were revolutionary but sadly not perfect. The non-movable seats were not popular and the air-conditioning airflow on the upper decks a bit feral until they added some baffles. The drive technology was old, too. But they were still a huge upgrade, a very unique and nearly timeless design and Sydney was definitely better for them.

      Hi Static san, yes you are correct, there were some tullochs in this video, there's a few in my coming Saturday visit too. You are right, the Tangara were rushed through production, but testament to the quality we can produce even under pressure. Thanks so much for watching.

      There is something else odd about the Tangara sets, and that's the frequent loud banging between carriages that can be heard especially when running downhill.

    5:55 "Tangara" is an Aboriginal word meaning "election promise".

    The First five "T" sets are getting close to 40 years old which is the normal life expectancy of rolling stock due to aging of wiring & electronic components parts availability. No mention of the original "S" sets, that were the original all double deck train for suburban use after the original test "S" set built by Tullochs that was referred to as "the flying nun set".

    Never should have broken with the DNA of the Bradfield stock from the 1920s and 1930s: lots of doors per car, single-deck, fast acceleration & cornering (for the time), comparatively easily coupled into shorter or longer sets. The double deckers for inner-urban areas were a big mistake, they might have made sense to the Blue Mountains or Wollongong but for the whole network. Same as they never should have stopped digging the rest of the tunnel South from Wynyard that fed trams across the Eastern lanes of the Harbour Bridge but was designed to double capacity through the city - they knew they needed this capacity long-term but the Government chose to scrap billions of dollars worth of infrastructure to subsidise private transport.

      @@trainspottingwithbarrie People attacked Sydney Metro incessantly in the first couple of years after its announcement, saying it was "breaking Bradfield's legacy" and all the rest. If people actually studied the philosophy of Bradfield and his team from 1913 to the mid-1930s, they would see Sydney Metro is actually in many respects a modern form of what Bradfield was actually suggesting: 30 trains per hour, single-deck with lots of doors, fast handling, through the middle suburbs and into separated tunnels up the spine of the City and back out again.
      Don't get me wrong, there are legitimate things you can criticise Sydney Metro for, it is costing more than it should and has left stupid gaps which will persist as money gets tight like Schofields-Tallawong, Bankstown-Sefton (or Regents Park), Aerotropolis-Leppington and Westmead-Prairiewood should all have been done in their initial operational stages. But in essence they have got most of it right and will be a total game-changer for the city.

    the K-sets will be fully retired this year when the D-sets enter service, being replaced by H-sets
    (i don't think any K-sets will be preserved)
    and the Tangaras aren't set to be phased out until the 2030s
