That passion and anger in her voice is unmistakable. A classic Giddens track.

As an American History teacher this song is so powerful. A song during the Civil War and love it how Julie is waiting to be freed by the Federals plus to tell them about the box of gold. Love this song

    Julie, oh Julie
    Won't you run?
'Cause I see down yonder, the soldiers have come
    Julie, oh Julie
    Can't you see?
Them devils have come to take you far from me
    Mistress, oh mistress
    I won't run
'Cause I see down yonder, the soldiers have come
    Mistress, oh mistress
    I do see
And I'll stay right here 'til they come for me
    Julie, oh Julie
    You won't go
Leave this house and all you know
    Julie, oh Julie
    Don't leave here
Leave us, who love you, and all you hold dear
    Mistress, oh mistress
    I will go
Leave this house and all I know
    Mistress, oh mistress
    I will leave here
With what family I've got left, they're all I hold dear
    Julie, oh Julie
    Won't you lie?
If they find that trunk of gold by my side
    Julie, oh Julie
    You tell them men
That that trunk of gold is yours, my friend
    Mistress, oh mistress
    I won't lie
If they find that trunk of gold by your side
    Mistress, oh mistress
    That trunk of gold
Is what you got when my children you sold
    Mistress, oh mistress
    Don't you cry
The price of stayin' here is too high
    Mistress, oh mistress
    I wish you well
But in leavin' here, I'm leavin' hell

This song gives me the shivers. I'm actually going to use it in my African-American History class because it tells so much more than just a story can tell (and believe me, I try my damnedest to tell the stories)

Each new song, I ponder whether Rhiannon Giddens can get more amazing, gain more depth as an artist, a musician - and each time she answers "yes". Uniquely brilliant, rare and deep. TImeless and completely honest in her performances.

I saw her do this on UNC TV and it made me weep. The truth of the song, the framing of that truth in such powerful lyrics, and the simple but really tasteful banjo and fiddle are the makings of a true classic. I now have a Rhiannon playlist with just about everything she has done. Absolutely love Angel City, String of Pearls, and Birmingham Sunday. Rhiannon, if you ever see this, "Would you marry me!" :)

It is a sad point that this story is not as defined by skin but the power of slavers who relish the ability to play god over those who have no power. This Lady is a gift to music world & the souls of the compassionate Souls who want equality to thrive even if it misses the reality that all races have abused each other & it is the Devil's work in the doing.

Funny the word Mistress, a title, also called the teacher in an older language. In boarding school, including Native American, I wonder seriously if there is a common untold bond or realization to children to the song, in older days, maybe they didn't die in boarding school, maybe trafficked as currently, statistics, of missing, missing students, children, college age, parents-pta. In other words, maybe there is a tie, there was for my untold mine.
