- The computer does not recognize the USB connection from Sony message fix. Hope this helps I had to troobleshoot this one myself for lack of information. In case anybody also has a hard time getting the information here it is.
Specially useful upon doing the 3.0 firmware update to Sony camera A7r and A7iii.
so if anyone is still dealing with this issue, "not being recognized" and you are not using the factory cable that came with the camera, make sure the micro USB cable you are using supports data transfer. Most of the cables out there are charging only and data transfer capable cables will usually be a few bucks more and specify that they are capable of transferring data.

Thank you! This was driving me nuts. Mine was set for mass storage as well and I never did a firmware update. Once I changed to USB, I still had to try a few different cables before one worked, but now I am good to go! Again, thank you!

As long as your computer has the correct sony raw image view drivers, this fix is actually what allowed my PC to view the raw files and videos. Thanks!

Had the exact same issue trying to connect my 6100 to a 2019 MacBook Pro. Turns out it was the actual USB cable. I tried 4 different cables before I found one that actually worked! Sony sells their own USB cable, too (that's what clued me in that they might use a slightly different USB standard).
This drove me crazy and I lost hours trying to figure this out. Kudos to the other commenters who figured this out before me. But get a beefier micro USB cable!

hey! I want to try this but my screen on my camera says 'check the connected device', it won't allow me to get out of that screen when my camera is connected to my laptop. And when I disconnect it and go to usb connection, it says it's on mass storage but it won't allow me to change it went it's not connected by usb :(

it works now, had to buy a new usb that allows data transfer, you may be using a usb that doesn't allow it, that's why it doesn't work @@edysaputro7063

OMG Thank you so much! it worked! my sony just bought it,and it was making me crazy that I wasnt able to transfer anything.It was set up as mass storage but when I clicked to changed to auto I wasnt able to do so it said ctr/w smartphone On actually and then look for where to turn it off.once I turned it off it automatically went to auto,and transfer everything!

@Lee 1227 in the 3rd icon that represent the network u'll see in the list send to smartphone,send to computer,view on tv,"CRTL W/SMARTPHONE"enter/click in here and you will see its "on" click there and ask you "on" "off" choose off thats it!🙂

i have an older sony camcorder, the HC21, which windows is still not recognizing when I plug it in via the factory USB cable, I have enabled the USB option in the settings on the camera but still no luck.

OMG, I've been fighting it for an hour. You are right. Mine got change automatically because of Ctrl w/smartphone was ON. I cant believe they dont have an auto fail-safe for that stuff.

Wow, that worked. I watched about ten videos and none of them had this fix. I put USB on auto to connect. And then with a prompt on the PC, I changed to PC remote to get live view for photography.

Hmm... I'm having this same problem... I tried all these fixes. Nothing seems to work. I am trying to upgrade my firmware, and so, even if auto usb worked, I would still not be able to upgrade the firmware in that setting, right? Doesn't matter, because I can't even get that to work. Crazy. I know my cable is good, because it works to charge the batteries in a separate charger. Not sure what to do now. Crazy.
And you be checked that it's a camera cable or, not a cable that just charges but that can also manage data ?

i'm having major problems connecting my a6600 to my computer. I tried your solution but when I click on in MENU SETUP fourth page (4/7) USB Connection is greyed out in mass storage. When I try to open mass storage to change the setting from mass storage to auto there is no option, all is greyed out.
Many solutions were offered throughout this feed. The ones that keep coming up are changing usb wire and making sure it's a data one and upgrading firmware of camera....
For me the "connect to PC" option was greyed out. I realized i needed to go to the network settings and turn "control w/ smartphone" option off. Then i could also use the pc setting as well. Just a little FYI for anyone having the same issue as me!

Make sure your cable is also able to transfer data, otherwise it won't get recognised. Happened to me as well. Just try a couple different ones.@@BalancingHormones

I figured out this issue! The cable has to be a data cable. The instructions say to use the cable the camera came with, but mine doesn’t work. I tried a few cables before realizing I needed a data cable

FYI - for anyone where this doesn't work.
At least with the a6400, it came with the "Ctrl with Smartphone" set to ON (which makes no sense to me). While this is on, you cannot change the source shown in the video. Check to see if that's enabled on yours, disable it, then try what you're doing.

@@knownmugen5794 Took this directly from the help page for sony and it helped: you must turn Ctrl w/ Smartphone OFF in order to change the USB Connection setting. (Ctrl w/ Smartphone is in one of the pages under the green NETWORK tab

I had the same issue on my a6400 and I turned off the "Ctrl with Smartphone". Now the USB Connection set to auto but it is still not working. The camera display keeps saying "USB mode Connecting..." and that's it. I used the cable that came with the camera and I see that the battery is charging. Any thoughts?
Mass storage is fine. Mine was set to PC Remote, which I did during some experiment with my friend a while ago. Setting to Auto (or Mass Storage) fixed it for me. Thank you for pointing me in this direction.

i have a6400 and i still can not transfer photos :/ i dont see any folder in my computer. Where is problem ? i turned off "smartphone mode" and i have set "mass storage" or "auto" and still nothing happend.

I've tried multiple usb cords and each of the settings and still can't get it to connect. This is a new laptop. Do I need a sony app or something? Sure is frustrating.

How did you manage to do that? How did you come out of the mass storage? I can’t come out, it drives me mad.
Again try following all the advice given here : update firmware and use the camera usb wire if it is in working order. If all else fails, read the comments as there are plenty of good tips here. Good luck, let us know!

Needed to use the Mass storage option in order to update my firmware... The fix was finding a USB cable that supported data transfer. Most USB cables are for charging only. The cable that worked for me was actually one that came with one of my wired xbox gaming controllers.

I need your help!!! . Even if my sony a7 iii camera is connected to the computer then nothing is showing on the camera screen. There is a “mass storage”. The cable is given with the camera. There is no problem with the cable. The camera does not connect to the computer even to update the firmware. It only shows that an unknown was taken on the computer, but it is not possible to access the camera. No operation is performed on the camera
Is the computer updated, up.to date?
There is a Windows update, but the drivers are all updated

I will.assume you restarted the computer after updating Windows. I will still suggest trying a different cable making sure it's a date cable not just a charging one in the process.

Doesn't work... This camera is getting on my nerves first I had an error after every photo saying camera error turn power off I had to take off the battery and plug it in again every time I take a photo... Now this ? Sony's not that reliable by the looks of it
On top of all it doesn't seem to work sending photos to my phone it stays stuck on connecting .........
Thanks again... this is the second time in 6 monts that I watched this video... I forgot what solved it the first time this happened. Sony realy needs to fix their shit... In all the documentation they say to set it to PC remote but that doesn't help, setting it auto does.

Just to help out others looking for a way to update the camera firmware: had to find the EXACT USB cord provided by the camera manufacturer in the box (has a distinctive Sony text in one of the sides) for the camera update software to work (tested on W10). Also in my case I had to enable the Mass Storage mode and wait for at least a couple of minutes connecting (it shows a CONNECTING text). Otherwise, the Auto mode got stuck indefinitely.

I’m not sure if it was the same cable that came with the Sony camera. But I did have to keep switching cables until one worked. Not all cables are compatible with the camera
It has to be a "data" cable I guess ...but hard to know which is which until you tried em!

WOW - I was stuck in PC mode and could not switch back to MASS storage transfer. Then it dawned on me. UNCONNECT so the camera would not go into PC mode(blocking me from changing the mode to MASS STORAGE transfer) . Then switch when not plugged in and the option to turn off PC Connect worked. ow can see movies and photos in Lightroom on MAC again and import locally! -whew-

When I say a different wire of course I recommend the original wire that came with the camera.
For anyone else if its still not working for you, USE A B-TYPE USB. I believe that is built for data transfer.

The remote connection option is disabled, please help!
The solution is: Turn off "CTRL w/ Smartphone" in the Network Settings, then the USB Connection can be changed. Now it works like a charm.
Had the same problem (with a brand new generic unused usb cable) did not work. Changed to another usb cable, and it all went fine.
Some usb wires are different. I have one for an mp3 where you can download songs from your PC to the device but this only works with this particular usb wire it has an arrow design in black rubber on it and that's the only visual difference between this usb and a regular usb wire. Hardly perceptible to the naked eye. Thanks for posting! Cheers!!

IE is crabware. The only Sony I got to work was the A7R4, all other 5 Sonys did not work with MacOS Catalina.

I don't own this camera but when a tab is greyed out I generally check settings like make sure airplane mode turned off ctrl smartphone off Bluetooth off etc...and check what changes these being about. good luck.
@@PortofinoArts What should I do on my A6400 ,I bought it from previous owner who instaled version 2.0 on it. On display when I came to position shown on this video, mass storage is somehow grey displayed, not white like other programmable options in this menu, and when I try to enter in that section USB connecton/mass storage it display shows message ( This operation or setting not available as follows Ctrl w/ Smartphone) and below that On. That is impossible to change.I also may say that USB cable is working correctly in a charging battery mode, when is connected to desk PC . What is advice for that you or someone knows. Thanks...

@@MarcoKingstons If her solution doesn't work, consider these two options: 1, reset your A6400 to the default settings, and then update the firmware. Or 2, ensure you're using a data cable and not a charging cable. Cables are inexpensive; buy one. You need one anyway. Personally, If I bought a used Sony, I'd reset it before using it for anything at all. Sony's menu options are so freakin' convoluted, there's no way of knowing how screwed up your camera may be.

@@brayanolea6268 I don't own this camera but someone previously posted that it worked for the a6000. I have a A7iii . Seems to me it should work the same:. USB on Auto I leave usb lun on multi since using a gimbal usb power supply on- PC remote settings on: PC+camera control with smartphone: off make sure to use a recent camera usb wire such as the ones supplied with camera....

Was having trouble not hearing sound when I transfered my a6600 videos using WiFi or a USB cable. Saw a video discussing proxy recording , I turned that on and my videos transfered to my Android phone with audio and the USB connect also worked, the video files were not in the same place as the pictures ...but all the videos were together and play perfectly

Thank you for the info!! In my case it was a cable issue!! The short cable that came with the camera for charging didnt work. I tried 4 other usb-micro cables, didnt work. Finally the 5th one, a Logitech usb-micro cable worked!! So try different cables to if you have this problem!!
