  • Playing drums quietly in a small theatre show where the amplification is minimal presents it’s own problems; Full acoustic is likely to drown out the singers. Using full electric degrades the sound as the pa won’t make it sound great.
Also space can be very limited. In the case so limited the bass player lost the gig as there wasn’t room for him.
Here, the instrument choices are as follows:
    1. Acoustic snare - many brushes. Swing gig, the show is Guys and Dolls. Snare drum largely quiet.
During a long Latin number the snares can be turned off giving us a timbale sound. (I had many compliments for adding the timbale sound, and it wasn’t too loud either)
2- Roland TM2- good even with just stock sounds for bass drum and toms. Giving the engineer control over the loud boomy elements of the kit.
    3. KT1” Roland kick pedal- eliminates need for a kick drum. Massive saving on space with this.
    4. PD105 and PD125 Roland drums. They have a good sturdy feel, mounted on stands not a rack, much easier and space saving again.
    5. Roland Pd8 pad. A basic pad BT perfect for triggering percussion, here it’s a cowbell and a wood block. Again much better to send these signals through the pa than play live. A woodblock means picking up a different beater to play which is difficult mid rhythm and the cowbell could be too loud in the setting.
    3. Zildjian gen 16 buffed bronze cymbals played live with no amplification. Also they sound a little “toppy” they worked perfectly. Despite their quiet sound they carry right through the theatre. Also remember I am near the stage and all the headset mics will pick them up as well.
So this is a truly hybrid set up, some amplified some not. The only thing you need to beat in mind is “what is the correct volume level for the gig?” Then put your kit together with that in mind.
There are a lot of new options available

Similar but not exactly, as some of it is geared to go through a pa.
