This really is significant. And Matt did a nice overview. There are plenty of people who love using LR, yet still find PS intimidating. Essentially, the newest innovations are saying 'you don't have to go to PS'. Which is more important than a lot of people think. Ultimately, the objective is to achieve results in the shortest possible time. I can only imagine what's next from the Adobe team. Neural filters in LR, maybe? Oil Painting effect? Is there life after Layers? Is LR perhaps becoming PS Light? A lot of people would be a bit more comfortable in that environment. There is nothing wrong with making processes EASIER...and dare I say it...Fun! And it just might sell a lot more subscriptions for Adobe.
I discovered this yesterday right after upgrading. I too was blown away. I was doing some senior portrait editing and was absolutely amazed that it was able to correctly select my subject every single time. It allowed my to easily do a little additional blurring to the background and change it some to add a little more contrast. Amazing up update.
It was about time. Lightroom was way behind nearly every competition including even small mobile editing apps. For such smart features it still is, even after this update. But I still use it for professional work due to all its otter cloud based features which come it very handy for my workflow
Yes, very excited about this one. For me, the last game changing update was the inclusion of the dehaze slider. However, for me, it seems that every update just makes LR run even slower- despite the supposed improvements in speed. Even the most simple tasks cause LR to freeze up and go black while it gives me the dreaded “not responding” message. My Dell XPS desktop running Intel dual core I7 and Windows 10 is pretty powerful, but despite these exciting additions, I use LR with an air of dread. I will be upping my RAM (now 8gb) to see if it improves things. And btw, I am currently only working with a 24 MP Nikon camera...
For me, Lightroom pretty much only crashes immediately following start-up. Granted I've had 16+ gig RAM for the past 6 years or so (currently 24). It is highly inconvenient but letting Lightroom have 5-10 minutes to start without touching anything has mostly solved my problems. It's inconvenient enough though that I do most batch editing via CaptureOne these days and just organize the final folders in Lightroom
I’m new to photography and Editing , i have to admit the way you explain and presented your steps are by far the best I’ve seen on youtube !! I’m definitely a subscriber NOW and keep up the good work 🙏🏽
Might have been mentioned by others, but invert is also in the main panel itself directly to the right of the mask panel. Thanks for the great tutorial as always.
This release really is just amazing! The new masking/selection capabilities are going to not only save me a ton of time in editing, but will also help to make better images!!
Mat This new Lightroom update has encouraged me to learn these adjustment tools I have never used photoshop as I can do most adjustments in lightroom with preset or adjustment tools
Thank you for the detailed video Matt! Knew I wanted to come here and watch your breakdown when i saw that masks had been added to Lightroom Classic. Love that they made all your previous brushes/filters into masks
One important overlooked feature here is mask intersection. You probably can achieve the same results with addition, subtraction and inversion, but it can be more straightforward in some cases. For example a linear gradient intersected with automatic sky selection will give you a linear gradient restricted to the sky with a couple clicks.
Thank you, Matt! You explained the concepts in a way that it is easy to understand. I bought the Deep Dive course. I'm so excited about learning all you have to teach here.
Thank you so much for this video. Very helpful and perfectly explained. I was trying it out on my photos while you were explaining the functions and I'm blown away by how this new Lightoom tool can speed up the workflow!
Thanks for this Head up in Lr Masking. I have alway been a bit frightened by Lr adjustment tools but you have explained it so well now. Just changed a portrait BG to white with a couple of Masks :)
Excellent tutorial as always I have Lightroom room classic now and I also have mobile but I haven’t got any these updates goto have to look into this. Thank you
I agree, this is maybe the biggest update to Lightroom ever. Certainly the biggest since luminance and color masks were introduced. I can't wait to try them!
I just had a play and this update is incredible. I did a comparison of prepossessing the same image with the new masks and then one I had done earlier using the old masks and (what I used to think was awesome luminance selections) and all I can say is the results are amazing. I may have reprocess all my photos.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE TIME STAMPS. I have used LR a lot and so am quite familiar--for the most part I'm finding my around the new vsn. But there are a few things that I've been getting hung up on, such as how to do the luminance range masks, and your explanations of these have been very helpful. And it took only 3 min., which is much appreciated. I plan to come back and listen to other parts as needed. Thanks!
I have been looking forward to this since I first heard about it! I played with a couple of photos before I came here and was able to figure out what I wanted to do. Now, I'm going to watch this video because I know it will be very informative and I will learn what I need to know.. Thanks, Matt!
Thank you Matt! Great intro to the new features. I just bought your "deep dive" course! Thanks for making it affordable 😉 You are among my favorite instructors. Always make things easy to understand and you are always on point with letting us know things all the details. For instance: glad you pointed out that the INVERT is in the sub menu. I would've been looking all over for that if you hadn't brought it up. 😆
When I do a subject selection there are always areas that need touch-up with the brush tool. That adds steps to the mask and also does away with the 'invert' box to select and invert the entire mask that I have done work on. I've worked on this for days and find no way to invert a selection that has had additional steps of touch-up with the brush tool. Am I missing something or is it just only possible to invert selections that have been made in one step and not multiple steps? TIA for any help with this.
One of the biggest new tricks that Lightroom has brought us is that the computer AI is much better for all the adjustments. The masking is really precise.
Fark now I have to re-edit all my thousands of photos from the past years trying so hard to fix up skies and never quite doing a 100% perfect job :D so much easier, faster and better now
Great video, thanks Matt. The sky selection for masking is brilliant. It’s not perfect, but very close and easily fixable. Just spent 3 hours comparing the same photos with similar AI sky masking tech from Skylum (Luminar) and ON1 (Photo Raw 2022). About 90% of the time Lr isolates the sky far better than the other two. I suppose it should given the massive resources Adobe have to throw at it! Combined with the awesome performance on M1 Macs, Lightroom is firmly back at the centre of my workflow. Just ordered your masking course!
Thanks Matt. I think if you right click on the little landscape icon which appears within the image it also will invert the mask. Can't help it I'm a mouse guy ~ old school!! As always great stuff!!
As someone that works primarily with After Effects, I'm no stranger to masks. This renaming of everything and implementation of the word "Masks" into Lightroom really makes it apparent to me what the use of this program is and what the workflow might be immediately. Before seeing this I always wondered how this was different from Photoshop or why I would use it instead, and now I have a better idea of the strengths of each program after seeing this with language I already understand from using After Effects.
Great video - Thanks - But HOW do I "add" a brush to "select Subject" - It doesnt allways select ALL of the subject OR it select to much. I want to be able to either add or "deselect" and make that selection AUTOMATICLY follow the setting of the "Select Subject" so I dont have two different "settings" for the brush and the "select subject"...(Made sense?)
I've watched at least a dozen tutorials on these new features in Lightroom and this one is by far the best. Keep it up, Martt, you're awesome.
Thanks!
Thank you for this update. I use a number of eternal applications that I link to LR for retouching and to have this level of masking is huge.
Matt is one of the best instructors around. I’ve been watching and reading for years. Always puts things in an easy to understand way.
Thank you!!!
Thanks for the clarification, awesome stuff (info) as always !

THANK YOU MATT!!! I figured out the basics, but this added so much more, and I love that you change mask to selection. Yes! :)
Thanks for jumping on this so quickly. Saw Julieanne's presentation yesterday and immediately updated. I appreciate your providing this gratis!
Installing... lets see what I get interesting in this new version :)
I just love the way Matt explains stuff, been following him for years!
Thanks Matt! Enjoyed your in-person training in Amherst, New Hampshire a few years ago.
Oh my god. I have not used my Lightroom in a few years. Now I will. I just updated mine, hehe. This I have been waiting for. Amazing video Matt.
Very Helpful thank you so much Matt
Apart from jumping toooo much between the pics this was a very helpful Tutorial, thank you
Awesome! you can also click the invert box
Great intro video to these new features, really helpful.

I agree Mike. Using it at this point I can't even imagine having to go back. It has saved me so many trips to Photoshop. Thanks!
These changes are HUGE for real-estate editing. I have already been using them for editing exterior photos.
Great video. Thanks for adding clarity to the whole process.
Well presented video of additional functionality in what looks to be a very good latest upgrade to Lightroom. Thanks.
Great video and I like the new improvements to LR!
I had learned the basics about the new tool and felt that it was great but what you did with the portrait was amazing . Thanks Matt
Awesome tutorial Matt. I share your excitement about these new tools!
I was looking for my brush presets, THANKS Matt!!
Mat This new Lightroom update has encouraged me to learn these adjustment tools I have never used photoshop as I can do most adjustments in lightroom with preset or adjustment tools
thanks Mat !! tis a huge improvements we waited it so long !!! Unfortunately, cant use it yet, my mac is too old ... waiting to my new mac ...
Thank you for the detailed video Matt! Knew I wanted to come here and watch your breakdown when i saw that masks had been added to Lightroom Classic. Love that they made all your previous brushes/filters into masks
Great tutorial! You explain things very clearly. Can't wait to try these new features. Thanks Matt!!
Feels like this gives you most of what you would what from layers in lightroom. Looks good.
I guess it depends on what you use Layers for in PS. For me, it's not even close but for a lot of uses it definitely keeps me from going to PS.
@@MattKloskowski I don't do much in the way of compositing. Mostly just masking and adjustments so for me this seems like it will do the trick.
Thanks a ton, MattK - Ima gonna snag a copy of your Deep Die now! 👍🏻
Great overview of LR’s new tools.
Thank you for clarifying where Invert is kept. Without knowing that, its location seems inconsistent and random.
Happy to help
Thanks for the great tutorial!

Thanks for that. I imagine i'll be coming back to this video in the not too distant future. Cheers!
Thank you Matt. The invert part is what I was looking for.
Well done, Matt. Thanks for doing this so quickly!
Night and day on the howler monkey. Great tutorial, thank you.
Wow - this is a pretty huge update - thanks for the video!
You bet!
Thank you... great instructional

Excellent info!
This was a great video, thanks a lot
Thank you, very informative and helpful.
Great tutorial, thanks Matt.
Very good quick dive. On the photo with the white plate I was thinking how to change the plate color using the new tools.
Luminance Range or maybe try color range.
I agree: this is a GAMECHANGER for us Lightroom users! :) Thanks for this video
Fantastic video. I also went and bought the 2 hour tutorial!
Fantastic! Thanks.

They're definitely not like PS, but a step in the right direction for local adjustments. Enjoy!
