Hi Eli, I hope you are well. I think this was a very good topic for you to cover. Its a very successful way of keeping your seedlings/plants watered. I first started using the system to keep plants watered when we went off to nice sunny place. Not many people that I know use it. Awra bestest Jim
if you click the link in the video you’ll be able to see it all working. It’s not a new set up, I used it last year quite happily. This video was because someone wanted to see how it was put together :D
Thank you so much for this video its a great idea. I have a newly acquired greenhouse this year and it's full of goodies we have a holiday home in Wales and I have been searching for ideas to keep my plants seedlings plugs and cuttings etc watered for 4 days on a regular basis when we go off to Wales for breaks and this could just save my babies while we're away ! Now I need to figure out how to get some kind of shading for it cos it's south facing Thanks again for the brilliant idea happy gardening x

Thanks for the quick tips. I have the "Growease" self-watering kit from Gardener's Supply Co., but would like to build my own the way you have, so this is great info.
Great info, thanks - could gravel be used as the platform, I wonder? I also have lots of sheeps wool strips from insulated food deliveries, might try those as comparison with matting 😃
to be honest I've never used gravel so I'm not sure. basically, you need the soild in the pots (via the wee holes) to be in contact with the damp surface, this then draws the moisture up into the pot... there will be a million ways of doing it :D
I have found that plastic takeaway tubs are the perfect size instead of using valuable seed trays or buying stuff. I use them in gravel trays which I got on Freecycle.
The capillary matting looks awesome for making sure the plants are getting watered as and when the need it. I take it the matting can be washed or cleaned to make sure it doesn't carry moulds or other nasties the following year etc?
Love the upside down seed trays within the larger tray idea. Perfect fit - job done! Not sure why you're using the gravel grid thing now... very ingenious though... did you need a different size water tray? Thanks for the video - another really good one!!
If I wanted to use this as a permanent water source for my littles like salad mix and herbs, would that be something that would last through the season?
it pretty much eliminates it. As long as you add water to the reservoir, it will keep the matting damp and water the plants. How much water is in the reservoir determines. how long this last for. But I would be wary of going for more than a few inches though, you don’t really want a pool of stagnant water sitting for overly long
Can't wait for the results, very interesting :) Where could I get this wicking material from please? Ebay doesn't return anything for word 'wicking' etc.
Hey Greg, I added a link in the video with the details of the kit and links or it’s in the about section of this channel or on my website :) It’s called capillary matting. Result are in, I did this last year and was really chuffed (that’s the video that is cut in to show it working).
@@eliandkate You said in the video that it was spontaneous and you might not have the words during filming .... I cast doubt on you not having the right words!! I also suggested your middle name might be Pinocchio so therefore your nose would grow .... a funny isnt a funny if the peep doesnt get it ... bummer!
I plan to set mine up this weekend. I’ll post on Facebook how it turns out.
I'm desperate to start going in the greenhouse :(
I started bottom watering exclusively this year, and it's so much easier!!!! I love it. I'm going to keep it up.
soooooo much easier :D
Great to know it works, now to get my trays set up and seeds started.
Good luck!
@@eliandkate Thank you!
Hi Eli and Kate, I thought I had missed some days this week thinking it was Sunday hahaha, Take care.

Thank you sweetie.
Any time hunny bunny! 😂
You can use felt from a fabric store works the same as the capillary mat and is cheaper or should be say less expensive!
awesome tip :D

Good question! It was cause last year I ended up annoyed cause I needed the seed trays but they were under the watering bed :D

yup... its the kind of things the professional growers use
Good video 👍
Thanks
Cool idea. So can you use this for any plants?
Pretty much all the flowers, fruit and veg type things I grow, yup. I'd avoid it for plants that prefer to be dry like cactus or succulents though

I'm wondering if anyone has tried a heavy or layered felt?
