    I'm in Glasgow and I grapped the side of a small plastic covered glowhouse and 2x2 polytunnel and left the roof thinking I needed more light. It's working alright but I will try now do what you've done for just a wee bit of extra heat. So glad to have found your channel, there needs to be more Scottish garden channels since we need more advice about all the humidity we deal with.

    Hello from Ottawa, Canada where we get really cold weather over January & February. May I suggest two or three things for you to try for next year :
    1) if you lift your floor pavers & place a layer of Styrofoam insulation sheets, it'll help keep your pavers dry in the winter;
    2) have you ever looked into passive heating ? Basically you put jugs (painted black or a dark coloured) filled with water on your North wall. When the sun comes in from your South and/or East walls, the jugs will get warm & therefore throw the heat into your greenhouse. You can also use dark plastic containers but most use jugs that they use at home with laundry detergent, milk, etc.;
    3) snow acts as a natural insulator so once you get a good amount, by packing the snow around the edges of your greenhouse, it'll at least keep more of that heat inside.
    Hope this helps for your idea journal. Thank you for your videos. Just love them. Take good care & stay safe.

    My sistern in law, puts the tiny platic growhouses from aldi inside her greenhouse and germinates and grows winter seedling that way. Just thought I would mention in case people have this things and find the bubble wrap a bother like she does. She doesn't have a problem with leggy seedlings and does this method for starts instead of using growlights.

      Yeah I saw a video of the hot water to snow trick this week from Toronto.
      You guys get it so so much colder than us. But I think there is definitely something different in the different amounts of moistures. I've noticed it more this year when we've had some of much colder weather, it's been dry and for some weird recent didn't feel as cold. But the days where it was warmer, around -1 or -2 but was wet... It felt much colder.
      I so don't understand weather 🤣🤣🤣

    As a final note, my sistern in law swears by bubble wrapped spaces and growhouses inside greenhouses for bulbs in containers. The extra bit of heat always gets her planters bloooming early than any garden I've seen, but she does stab a few holes for ventilation in those covers just to let some humidity out and keep the bulbs healthy.

We have really mild winters here and can’t see spending more than I need to. I am looking into passive heat because we do get a lot of sunshine and using 55 gallon plastic drums painted black to soak up the heat during the day. My greenhouse in 10 foot by 12 foot. Eli that was SUCH a good video. I love your chatty nature so much, you are both fun and informative to watch. I have a brand new (very tiny) unheated greenhouse and have been thinking about ways to maybe raise the temperature without spending a lot of money, just so I could start seeds sooner. But I agree, the fact of the matter is we live in colder climates than lots of our UA-camr friends around the world who are in warmer places and can sow seeds now ... we just have to wait a bit longer than them until we can get going. I’m going to wait until March for my seed sowing and, really, we are still going to be able to have veg and annuals etc from seed, we just need to be patient and accept the fact that we can’t start everything just yet. I really appreciated all your trials, it was just what I have been wondering myself and my own tests concluded exactly the same, my greenhouse is only a couple of degrees warmer than outside during the day (unless it was very sunny) and mine too is often colder inside than it is outside, especially at night. It will soon be Spring and before long we will probably be saying our greenhouses are too hot 🤣🤣 thank you so much for a great video!

    I’ve put up bubble wrap and had a small blower heater with a thermostat all winter. I didn’t but the expensive bubble wrap and spent about £1.50 per week on heating. My heater only kicks in if if drops below 3 degrees. It’s enough to keep the load of small seedlings and plants making it through the winter.

    Ahead of the approaching winter, maybe you'd like to try using a popup grow house with shelves and removable cover inside the greenhouse, rather than the bubble wrap. I've found they provide a good amount of insulation and can be covered with an additional layer of bubble wrap for extra protection if the temperature plummets below zero - i.e. minus 5C for long periods. I've successfully overwintered gazinias and other non-hardy plants this way. Great video. I found the graph you displayed very helpful and interesting along with your thoughts and comments on living with the bubble wrap. I also agree with the statement about seeing the plants and them 'calling to you' as you look at them from in the house!

    • @eliandkate

      I think the feeling if living with bubble wrap is important for those us us with smallish gardens, the greenhouse is such a visible landmark that visually its really important.
      It sounds like you do something similar to me. I use propagators jn the greenhouse the way yiu use your plastic greenhouse, just togive that extra level of cover.
      I'm actually talking about it in tomorrow's video, more in terms of keeping the soil warm for seed germination rather than protecting less hardy plants but they are useful and a god send some winters 😀

    this was helpful especially the charts. they clearly show wide swings in temps continued which to me, means the bubble wrap (alone) doesn't moderate the temperature swings. I do thnk (expensive) polycarbonite would "flatten" those swings.it's also possible encapsulated bubble wrap (sandwhiched between two panels) would work better; fan might help too. thanks bvry much for sharing your charts with all of us.

      @eliandkate  Рік тому

      You’re more than welcome.
      You are right though, nothing other than having heating in there and good solid insulation prevents the peaks and drops. The temperature will peak in daytime when there is sunlight and drop at night once the sun sets.
      Unfortunately it’s the annoying thing about greenhouse marketing, they make it sound like it’s some sort of miracle but in truth, although great at making the best of the sunlight, they do have limitations that we need to learn to work with.
      This video is quite old now, since then I’ve stopped trying to change the temperatures in there in winter. It is what it is and instead I plant appropriately for the season, lots of hardy greens 😀

    Thanks for this- it answered a lot of questions for me! I had not gone down the bubble wrap route myself, but I had some cheap pop-up “greenhouses” from Wilko, which I had used in lieu of a cold frame. I then decided to use them in the greenhouse for storing more sensitive plants/seedlings, like a sub-greenhouse, over the winter and it worked pretty well - not a huge difference but enough for my purposes. I may do this next year with the bubble wrap instead of the plain plastic sheets to see if this is better. So if you don’t want to wall off an area, of your greenhouse, you could try using bubble wrap on some racking. Just a thought! Anyone else tried this?

    Your videos are so helpful and I'm slowly working my way through them (6am, cup of tea, get a few videos in before I start my day). I was never really interested in gardening but lockdown made me realise I needed to do something constructive and now I'm now absolutely loving it. A friend advised bubble wrapping the greenhouse which my hubby did for me but to be honest I'm not sure the effort and cost was worth it and some (not all) of the geraniums and fruit trees I left in there have gone mouldy but without it they may not have survived anyway. Especially loved the video about sterilising spent compost to reuse - I have thrown loads away, so bad! I am now thinking about quadgrow planters so may ask you about them separately.

    Interesting conclusion. As you may be aware, I tried putting a mini plastic greenhouse wrapped in bubble wrap inside my bigger glass one and tried to heat that instead of warming the whole 8x14 space. However, every morning the plastic house was very wet on the walls, so I gave up and put everything into warming propagators instead. Think I lost quite a few chillis and peppers as they rotted. You need to get electricity in there! It’s not a big job, honestly. I think I’ll make an 8x2 heated bench for next year as I can use it for when seedlings come out of the vitapods.

    This just come up on my home page to watch so thought I would…. And it’s funny that you said about being funny.
    It’s funny how Scotland is wet and humid but not just there…. If you can get a humidifier or humidity meter. As we got one as had mould in the bedroom, minging!!!
    And even here in southeast Kent… it’s ment to be the opposite weather to get what you get lol. But we need the dehumidifier on as can’t get it below 50% but without it on it’s between 70-87% so it does make a difference and the unit I have takes out 5L of water in 6-8 hours.
    Which is good and I know if it’s filling up and the meter says it’s like 50% I will turn it off and save electric but it most definitely has helped.
    You can get disposable dehumidifier boxes that you throw away or empty and recycle once full , that take the moisture out the air

My greenhouse has been up for about a month, but nothing in it so far, trying to seal it all before putting things in, you mentioned water coming under the frame?, I have sealed my frame to the paving slabs with a good quality silicon sealer, but there was still water ingress, turned out it was coming from the top corners at the roof and running down, now sealed too. I have plastic greenhouse with no heat and using fan to protect against frost and dampness as current experiment. I get 28-110F or -2-43C temps in my area in Northern California USA. Keep those videos coming and take care!

      Hey James
      We usually get down to about -7c so not cold in terms of places like Canada but it’s a wet cold here. We see humidity levels above 85% through winter so that cold bring list of ice and hard frosts
      I don’t heat the greenhouse over winter, although in late, spring when I’ve got large plants like tomatoes and peppers. So usually end of April I will heat the greenhouse to about 10c just to keep those plants happy.

    I think you should try the winter sowing method on bottles or what I have done on just a low tunner (just a a low hoop covered in plastic I use to keep the squirlies from digging) Even with the frost there's a lot of plants that can be started. My outdoor seedlings are doing fab with this method this year. I was so amazed that 90% of my sweetpeas have germinated outside in toilet rools and trays inside a plastic tub from home bargains haha.

    • @eliandkate
      @eliandkate  3 роки тому

      :D
      it's funny - as far as I can see, the winter sowing thing is just planting in propagators but using household rubbish (old pop bottles, milk cartons etc) instead of proper propagators. I need to be honest, I'm not sure what's so special or different about it?

    • @mumuma8450
      @mumuma8450 3 роки тому

      @@eliandkate You're right. In my opinion it's something that's good depending on your situation. Like if you start gardening and don't want to invest a lot of money, it's a good way to get your foot in the water. For me, I really don't like gardening during winter, even when I start getting excited around this time, I go out and it just puts me off and taks don't get done and seeds don't get started, so I can just pop something outside (before having polytunnel) and forget about it until spring since it didn't even need water. It also saves space under the lights if you don't have a protected garden set up.

    • @mumuma8450
      @mumuma8450 3 роки тому

      We don't buy a lot of things that I could use, so I would get next doors large water bottles. Now even though I use that for flowers, I just collect the family's newspapers and toilet paper rolls and shove them in a plastic tub and leave my seeds outside, that way I don't have to prick anything out and repot and still not bought any propagator type thing from a shop. I think if it works and it benefits you in some way, use whatever you have at home before spending money. Save the money for more seeds and other garden stuff.

    • @eliandkate
      @eliandkate  3 роки тому

      yeah I think that's exactly right. Where it's a good thing, using what you have instead of buying fancy bits and bobs. It gives me a bit of a chuckle that it's just been the way things have been done in the garden forever (well for a long time - you know what I mean). Putting seeds out when there might be a frost, make sure you cover them for some protection, but somebody online named it winter sowing and suddenly it's a craze.
      Wish I could come up with a clever thing to make a crave and get more folk gardening 😂 Could we be onto something?

    I truly enjoy you input and love your channel. I wonder what would happen to the temperature if you ran an extension cord to the greenhouse and put a small heater in it while you still have the bubble wrap on it? I live in Arizona, US. I have a small greenhouse made with large coroplast sheets ( they provide insulation like your bubble wrap). I am able to heat my greenhouse and keep it well above freezing - close to 60 degrees on our coldest nights. We don’t get as cold as you get so it might not work for you. My biggest problem is keeping the greenhouse cool during the day. I have a device that raises the roof to let the heat out but it’s not enough. We are going to install a temperature controlled vent when the snow melts.

    Just had a giggle over what is considered proper winter temperatures in your part of the world. Here in Canada, we would use the phrase "It's only -6 degrees." Everything is relative I guess. We get colder winters but the coldest days are usually clear and sunny so temperatures can get up to 30 degrees inside the greenhouse. For us, it is trying to keep the temperatures at a more even level because at night without insulation the greenhouse gets down to outside temperatures (as low as -40 but averaging in the negative teens). Insulation and some form of heating or heat storage are essential if we want to use the greenhouse for anything other than storage in the winter.

    • @eliandkate
      @eliandkate  11 місяців тому

      Wow this is a stark reminder of how much things have changed over the last few years. This video was only a few years ago but even in that time there have been changes in average temperature… we now see -8c as much more of an average and spells below that are happening much more regularly. Summer too we’re seeing warmer temperatures. Lots of change.
      It is all relevant yeah, just on how it feels (regardless of actual temperatures) can be so different between us all because of the different levels of moisture. I’m loving learning about all the different gardening folk all over the world and their garden experiences.

I had/have a problem with my greenhouse being too wet/humid, so my beans and peas got the mould and nearly all dead now 😢 I am very very beginner at the gardening, so these beans and peas were just an experiment to see if they survive through the winter (as it said on the packet that I can plant them in Sep) My greenhouse only 6x8ft and it’s polycarbonate, so I wonder if it being glass rather than polycarbonate would have been less humid. Anyways, thank you for great tips that I have seen so far 👍

      I can tell you from experience Vilma that humid greenhouses happen regardless of glass or poly. Mine is very humid too.
      It sounds to me like you need to focus on how much you are watering. In the colder months you need to water less and less
      Too much watering can cause mould and fungus.

    I was thinking if you took off all the plastic and started with just the frame: then put a layer of bubble wrap over the frame (with bubbles facing out) and then a layer of poly straight on top of the bubble wrap, that would give you a nice layer of air between the poly and the bubble layer (because the bubbles are holding up the poly). If you do it my way then you don't have to be so fiddly with wrapping the bubble wrap around all the bits and pieces you've got inside the frame area.

      I actually spoke about seed starting needs in the video a few weeks ago but to be honest I wouldn't recommend it. Firstly, seeds don't need anything except very fine and lightweight. So I'm sing your good potting mix is a waste. I'd save it for when the seedlings become little plants. But also, seedlings are super delicate and can easily be damaged by fertilisers and things added to the mix.
      Without knowing your mix and what's in it, it's hard to say but my preference is cheap compost from the garden store, sieved to be as fine as possible... Nothing else.
