WEST HIGHLAND WAY DISASTER! Glasgow to Ben Nevis stage 7/7: Fort William to Ben Nevis

  • DISASTER ! After walking 182km / 113 miles from Glasgow, a problem struck at the halfway point on the ascent.
I decided to walk the West Highland Way from Milngavie to Fort William. However, to up the ante a little, I made things more difficult, by starting the walk on the banks of the River Clyde and finishing on the summit of Ben Nevis.
Along the way witnessed some of the most beautiful scenery Scotland has to offer, including lochs, moors, rugged mountains and glacial valleys. The route passes Conic Hill, Loch lomond, Inverarnan, Crianlarich, Tyndrum, Bridge of Orchy, Rannoch Moor, Glencoe, the Devil's Staircase, Kinlochleven and Fort William.
The West Highland Way can be completed in 5 stages, so my little Glasgow to Ben Nevis hike would be covered over 7 stages. I ain't no spring chicken any more, so how would I cope with days of punishment? What could possibly go wrong?

It was a fabulous 7 stage journey, loved every minute. Nothing I say will diminish your disappointment but I wanted to say you are a truly admirable person. You allowed common sense to dictate your decision to quit while you were still winning. I know you will continue to educate and entertain us for a long while yet. Love your videos Scott, please keep them coming.

Respect for doing as much as you did. I couldn'tdo 10% of it and I'm about 25 years younger than you! Thanks for sharing your journey with us you deserve a good 10X more views.

Thanks for your kind comments. I appreciate I'm not in the same age category as your average UA-camr, so I have to be realistic about how many views and subs I can achieve. My goal is to reach 100,000 subs, not because I need a UA-cam silver plaque, but because it would impress my son so much (very much part of the UA-cam generation).

Scott, no need to be gutted after all, you walked 6 full days and that took quite a bit out of you and your legs.
I once tried going up Ben Nevis when my son and I were camping at Glen Nevis campsite. It was a hot sunny day and we made it roughly half way up when I decided to turn back. My son, he was 11 at the time, moaned but I told him that going downhill can often be harder than going uphill, an experience I made in the Austrian mountains. I made the right decision that day because my son was on the brink of collapse when we got down to some pub not far from the campsite.
    You've done great, mate

I’ve enjoyed all parts of this series. I think you’re a very wise man for knowing when to say when but I get you feel gutted. Still, you’re awesome for doing all you did…in the heat of summer to boot!

I’m absolutely gutted for you too, Scott. I have enjoyed every stage of this series and hope to walk the WHW myself at some point. Needless to say, you did exactly the right thing in turning back, but it must have been an agonising decision. All the best and huge congratulations for the achievement.

It's been very entertaining following your entire seven-stage journey, showcasing some breath-taking Scottish scenery👍
Just wondering, do you think trekking poles would have helped to take some strain off your knees and legs?🤔

Don't be gutted. You have done amazingly well on your West Highland Way journey. You did the correct thing in knowing when to listen to what your body was telling you. This is not a failure, you should be proud of the attempt. It's been fantastic being able to share it with you through this series.

When I climbed Ben Nevis in the 70's, there was zero visibility from half way up. The ascent and descent took a full day and I was young and fit back then. A stroke 5 years ago makes a repeat impossible even allowing for the fact that I'll soon be 67

Just discovered your channel Scott and have subscribed. Kudos in listening to logic and your body and yes there is always another angle and chance in completing your goal. I so have enjoyed your wealth of knowledge of not only Scotland, presenting it in such a unique way that I will have to revisit it again crossing the very Big Pond. Looking forward for future videos....Take care ☕

Well done you, in going as far as you did, which is a lot more than most folks would be willing to do.
Have enjoyed the series, with the scenery and the narrative, along the way.
Take care & Best of Luck, in your future journeys, which I trust, will be injury free.
    Namaste 🙏 💟

I’ve just binge-watched (as a fairly new subscriber) all seven parts of your epic adventure, and I have to say that I feel so disappointed for you, especially after all the physical effort that you put in (as well as the planning and organisational side of it too). So close but so far. You did the right thing in bailing out, rather than risk adding a knackered back to the fractured skull and torn knee ligament injuries from your previous WHW walks. I hope that you had a nice long soak in a hot bath after you got home, and a few cold beers too, as you definitely deserved it all. I’m almost 64 and would love to try something similar, but on a smaller scale as I’m not as young and fit as I used to be. Please take care, and wishing you the best of luck on your next hike and ascent of Ben Nevis, should you ever attempt it.

Well done Scott, atleast you had the sens to turn around and didn't push on, the outcome could have been a lot worse.
I finished a walk in Fort William with the intention of going up the Ben the next day. Cover in mist, but some people did an ended up in one of the five finger gulleys,

That was stairs all the way! No wonder after all the other hikes to get there your knees gave up. We bought new hiking boots in Austria and rode cable up the mountain and “ hiked” down, 3/4 down my husband walked backwards from tree to tree. His knees had given out! And he had to walk backwards down stairs in hotel from 2 nd floor!he was 41 and ran every day at home so thought he was in better shape than we were and we hiked in B.C.

Just finished the series and enjoyed every part. Quite effortless for me! With your level of activity Scott, you should not be experiencing those leg and back issues. I know everyone says it's just age and you have to expect it. Even your NHS doctor probably says the same. They are wrong though. You can do a lot about those issues and it is all down to your diet. On other (always enjoyable) journeys you've documented I have seen your diet and it is almost guaranteed to give you low level, chronic inflammatory changes, advancing cardio-vascular pathology and the very problems you document. Do some research into very low carb and ketogenic eating. Changing your diet may just save your life and keep you travelling for a long time to come. Best wishes.

Don't be disheartened. Many munroes in Scotland are very nearly as big, but with a gentle or slower ascent on grass. I don't know how many days you had rested before starting the climb but after 3 days of 40km hiking and one munro I literally could not move at all.

To be fair mate you done better than I thought, and you definitely done the right thing as walking down hill is a total knee killer that’s what causes injuries you probably wouldn’t of made it down to the bottom another day Scott it still counts 👍🏼
