Consecutive losses can be tough on us goalies mentally. Some nights, we just get shellled. Doesn't matter how good we felt or how confident you are going in, it just happens some times. One of a goalies hardest jobs is to quickly refocus after a goal or even multiple goals. You played hard, didn't give up, and kept fighting to keep your team in it. Everyone on the team had a rough night. Teams win together and lose together. You will bounce back, no doubt about it. Just keep reinforcing good habits and muscle memory. Way to pay real respect to the tendy across the ice from you that night. Nice of you to highlight him. Enjoyed the video.
I’ve been working so hard on the physical side of things but having this channel really made me realize how mentally challenge things can be. Appreciate the advice! That other goalie always stands on his head against us!
I have the same problem with allowing 5 hole goals in while getting into my butterfly. What I found was I wasn't keeping my stick on the ice and center once I go down into the butterfly. Now that I figured that out, most of those shots become stick saves and never actually make it to my pads.
I keep lifting my stick or popping backwards when I drop - usually when a shot is taken and i'm not properly set (ie on a turn over etc) Guess ya gotta be ready for anything to happen at any given time!
Nice, I've been adapting my Hybrid style into butteryfly style with modern pads, I last played high level in 2005, so its been an interesting transition but far more effective in a mens league where the majority of shots are mid-low, not to many snipers haha. I notice that you go down with your weight a little far back, this creates gaps in your pad seal and will be hard on your knees. I would recommend a simple fix; when in your standing stance, keep the gloves at the same height and push them forward, towards the shooter by 6-10 inches. This will do a few things, it will bring your weight forward so that when you go down, you'll have a better seal and it will be more comfortable so you will be confident in dropping faster. It will also get your stick out of the way of your pads and it will be easier to track the puck into the glove or onto the blocker. Let me know how it goes, good luck!
Thanks for the feedback! I used to really exaggerate my hands forward but for some reason I've been tucking them back a bit more recently - I'll take your advice and get them back out there again. I think what happens is my hands are good up until the shot gets taken, then it just all goes to shit lol
@@ovr40goalie 100% understand, you're playing with less confidence, I also find myself getting conservative with my hands, bringing them near the body to "close" the holes, but I would highly recommend keeping them out and playing aggressive towards the shooter, from the pucks "view", they gloves are bigger and the gaps are actually smaller, plus all the benefits mentioned before.
@@ovr40goalie After seeing that first goal against, I wandered into the comment section to give this same feedback: 6" more of glove projection is going to cut a lot of pucks down and, as a bonus, help eliminate the butt sag when you're dropping into the butterfly. It always feels like I'm opening a huge 7-hole gap when I'm projecting properly, but it works. As a bonus, the effect of glove projection is extra exaggerated when the shooter is shooting across their body to the far side like in that first goal. Once you're down in the butterfly, your slides look great! Summer conditioning paying off.
Nice to see all the support from all the fellow tendies. Regarding your sharp, no right or wrong here, as hollow is personal preference. Just keep in mind ice density will be different according to the seasons.
I definitely feel like a Hybrid goalie sometimes. I say at our level you just got to play with what you are comfortable with. I had a recent game that I felt like I was a step behind, and we lost 9-1, but the following game against a team that has similar talent I posted a shut out and we won 2-0. Sometimes no matter the technique or your readiness you just have a bad game. You just have to move on and learn from your previous game. I love looking over the footage to see what I need to work on and what I could have done better and try and implement it into the next game. As for the Shinny vs League mentality. It can really effect league games. There are so many times I don't smother the puck and just poke it to the corner because of shinny. Its hard to get away from that mindset sometimes. I've pretty much started playing shinny closer to how I play League so that I stay in a more competitive mindset.
Looking at the vids on glove side goals. It looks like you are matching up with the player not the puck and leaving more open than need be. Keep up the great work though man. Love your content.
Hey man thanks for great videos! I bought a go pro holder like you have so I can record my self but it kept falling of all the time in the warmup. Everytime they shoot in the board it feel off. What do you do to keep it in place place?
It happens! So first thing is test it out at home first you really gotta push the suction down hard then lock it in place Other thing is make sure the surface is clean , I recently had mine fall down due to the glass being extremely dirty. It should be suctioned enough that you can’t even take it off with force
Hybrid goalie here. I play and old school style and I am trying to play a certain way to improve my percentages as I get older. I have some video of my style. Last time I played it went a bit better lol.
Good effort though! Yes, work on your stance and square/set to the puck. Challenge the shooter when the situation calls for it. It is sometimes hard to just focus on the puck, rather than the shooter, but practice makes perfect. Also, track the puck (with your eyes/head), move and project your hands towards the shooter (to cut down on the amount of gaps from the puck's perspective). Your torso and feet will follow your hands. Essentially, lead with your eyes/head, then hands and then your torso/feet. Good luck!
I always put in my best effort every game. Unfortunately my best effort only lasts for about 20-25 minutes before my legs feel like they’re going to explode lol.
Hhaah i hear ya. The effort level unfortunately diminishes as soon as you get fatigued. I've recently started stationary bike and it's been a huge difference maker!
There is only one guy in my league that plays a true Kirk McLean/Billy Ranford standup style, amazing reflexes but like all of us, get us moving side to side and holes open up I get beat on that crossing shot a lot, if I hold my feet I can stop them, if I drop it always goes over top of glove its a work in progress We only want 10 guys, 2 lines 4 D
Never really worried about standup vs butterfly. All I worry about is whether my technique looks beautiful when I play. What’s funny is that with other recreational goalies I watch, I’m only concerned with how many were saved and not so much their style. With professionals I only care about style.
Great question. I play at a skate club and a lot of the goalies are around 60 and up, and physically cant or wont go into the butterfly. I can tell you from many games (I'm a butterfly style guy still in good shape) that it depends on the skill of the guys shooting at them. I've seen guys in front of me just shot after shot shoot it right into the middle of them - while I'm cursing at them and saying why the FUCK are you not shooting low or around them???? The higher the skill of the skaters the less effective the stand up guys are vs butterfly. They're literally useless in A or B games for the most part though.
I totally agree the old school works with lower div guys once ya move up you get sniped from standing around. With that said I almost ALWAYS get beat when there’s a standup guy on the other end lol
fix the stance and ur bfly will be fix. the problem is ur upper body should be square to the puck ( track down) chest logo to puck not players chest. also u need a shorter stick which looks like is throwing u off balance (turn it in ) . work on stopping the puck in front of you and down. u dont need to swing ur arm if it goes catch side, just let it it u , assuming u stay square and out.
he’s a hybrid not standup by the highlights - keep plugging - I’m up & done like toilet seat but my coach has been terrific in getting my head straight & realizing that the other guys in front of you don’t care that you feel bad on a goal that is their fault - stop the next one cause you really are on your own - I,m 75 , 5 years in goal love it hate it love it - no goalie no game or no goalie tooter shooter comes out - bad games i’m finding allow me time to review & TRY BASICS AGAIN AFTER GOALS _ GREAT VIDEOS
I’ve see a couple of old time stand up guys, play amazing! Crazy! Stopping everything.
Attendance is low? Ten guys on the bench. My brother if only I were so lucky😅😅😅😅
Hahaha, I laughed so fucking hard when he followed that up with “only 10 guys on bench”
That looked like my last game. 5 crap goals followed by 3 unreal saves! 😂😂
Happens to everyone !

@@ovr40goalie one of the toughest mental positions in sports, in my humble opinion. You are doing great work!! Keep it up!
Lol not flat to puck on shot one! Happens to me too🤦🏽♂️👊🏾
From what little I saw of the other goalie, I have to say he's not playing stand up. He's playing 90's style butterfly.
I did notice he was dropping down a lot more than usual. Classic 90s fly
You are correct. Stand-up goalies wouldn't utilize the butterfly. He's playing a style that is hard to define.

I'm 8 losses in, running barely over 80% in inline hockey, and questioning my sanity! Your video helped
I recall when I was doing inline anything over 80% was considered good! All that open space and offence
At least I'm getting better at 2-on-nones :D
