In Spain they have the La Tomatina Festival where they throw tomatos at each other, well this is a good thing. If The Brits toss cheese in there and the French toss their delicious bread in there, maybe the Germans can toss Wurst and then bake it all to make Pizzas. The Americans can deliver them during halftime of the Super bowl. Everyone wins.
@@michaelcrummy8397 it's wrapped up all nice and cozy by traditional aspects But they are not allowed the roll real cheese anymore the rubber foam cheese get swapped for a wheel of cheese with the first one down Can hit 75mph
Yes, they’re crazy. Some of us Brits are just insane. This is a very unexpected reaction video, Marie! I laughed when I saw the title. I’ve never been to see it in real life. I hope you had a wonderful birthday!
😂😂At near both 4:00 and 6:45. FrenchTastic girl Marie becomes an outspoken advocate activist for the benefit of every precious cheese! I LOVE it! You always surprise and entertain, Marie! Big 👍 😂😄🙂 ✌😷
This is awesome! Bring it to the States! Just make sure everyone signs a waiver, we are quite the litigious country. Marie is more worried about cheese abuse! Lol
I lived in Brockworth in Gloucester for 10 years and could see the hill out of my window. I went to it a few times. A friend of mine used to have a house at the bottom and they used to crash into his fence if they didn't stop in time or get caught by someone. There's a pub nearby called The Cheese Rollers 😋 I find it crazy how our local tradition/competition, which I've always taken 'as is' and not really thought much about, is known around the world and people find it so shocking/amusing 😂
Love the story of the woman that won the cheese even though she finished the race unconcious. She only found out later that she won in the medical tent after waking up.
I thought the cheese heads in Wisconsin were crazy with their zeal for the Green Bay Packers, but this is absolutely bonkers!!! Still it’s hilarious to watch. This may be what the soccer fans do in the off season!!!😂😂😂. After all these years of doing this,I imagine one could construct a pretty complete human skeleton from all the broken bones.😂😂😂.I hope no one has ever died from this,.after all that , the cheese had better be the best tasting in the world!!!😂😂😂. Your usual great job Marie . Looking forward to your next.😎👍👍👍
Great reaction Marie but at the risk of sounding cheesy, that's a pretty sharp hill they roll down 😊 Great video as usual and I hope you had a wonderful Birthday 🎂 🥳 🎉 and ate lots of great food. Best wishes 🥰 take care and be safe 🙏
So marie, what you do this weekend.... Well I chased a roll of cheese 🧀 down a steep hill..🤣🤣🤣 Human's aren't the smartest on earth as we clearly see🤣🤣 Happy birthday marie 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
OMG this is so dangerous, Are they crazy? oh OK they are competing for cheese................... LOL I guess that makes it OK then LOL Loved the reaction.
Yes the English are crazy and we love it. Check out Atherstone Ball game, also in England. The only rule is to not kill anyone, brawls and blood is fine
Happy 23rd Birthday Mademoiselle Marie! I saw something similar years ago on The Amazing Race. Seems like it was in some Scandavian country that time though, and not England. It looks ridiculous, hilarious, painful, and fun. Edited to add: Amazing Race Season 14 in 2009, the cheese wheels each weighed around 50 lbs (22.7kg) and it does appear to have been in Switzerland. Bonne Anniversaire! ~Be Blessed
Dear lady, we do it for three reasons, if you win you get the cheese, even if you do not win you get the glory of taking part in an ancient tradition and finally, and most importantly, we do it because we are English and insane by birth. In the words of Asterix and Obelix "Ces anglais sont foux!" Et c'est vrai!
It's one of those activities, that someone started and it just grew and it became interwoven into the psyche of the people, there is no reason for it other than the joy of throwing yourself down a steep hill in pursuit of a cheese - pour l'amour de la vie
Happy birthday young lady. Some if the people saying this is crazy and dangerous probably skydive and think it's fun. It's a matter of perspective. I was fishing in a fliat tube by our airport and a skydiver came down to talk. He asked mw if that tube was for keeping me from falling down in the water. His faced turned very pale when I told him that it does help especially in 20-30 feet of water. He said I was crazy for going out over my head. He showed me the water wings he had attached in case he landed in the lake. I pointed out that if my tube gets a keak I can swim to shore but if his parachute fails, he can't fky. Our perspective of what's crazy are just different.
I guess that it has been going on for so long that it has become a tradition. Each country has its own traditions, where I come from its an annual "Rattle Snake" hunt ......🙂
Did it once not too long after moving to the SW of England. About 20 years ago. Thought I was going to die lol. Wont do it again at my age now - will die internally of my daughter tries it - but have no regrets.
Being the home of some silly games like this, I think the object isn't to catch the cheese. It is to chase the cheese & be the first human at the bottom. Maybe someone familiar with this will know for sure. Something like this (but even more silly) is Barbie Jeep Racing in the US.
Cheese! Ranks right up there with bacon! Love me some bacon and love me some cheese. I've got an idea for a video for you to react to. It's called "Big Nasty Hill Climb." It's held in New Plymouth, Idaho. It;s climbing with motorcycles. You won't be disappointed! Hugs from Idaho...
The first written evidence of cheese rolling is found from a message written to the Gloucester town crier in 1826; even then it was apparent the event was an old tradition, and is believed to be at least six hundred years old. (from wikipedia) Two possible origins have been proposed for the ceremony. The first is said that it evolved from a requirement for maintaining grazing rights on the common. The second is pagan origins for the custom of rolling objects down the hill. It is thought that bundles of burning brushwood were rolled down the hill to represent the birth of the New Year after winter. Connected with this belief is the traditional scattering of buns, biscuits and sweets at the top of the hill by the Master of Ceremonies. This is said to be a fertility rite to encourage the fruits of harvest.
The racers going uphill are the under 16's, though some are A LOT younger. But then in France, you have motorcycles charging uphill climbs, {the arretes?}.
well its a fun tradition, some say it started as a pagan ritual, some say it started to settle disputes over land rights to the hill, and some say it was a tradition for a good harvest, in any case its a nice bit of fun. and two things, each winner gets to take their cheese home and no one has every died from doing this dont worry.
Nobody here outside of the South West of England understands it either. They are pretty much rural farm folk with strange voices & customs. I am in the South East, my uncle speaks with their accent & I have never been able to understand 90% of what he says.
What you do not see is there is a giant fondue pot at the bottom of the hill, if that would have been in USA then they would be tossing canned cheese at Natchos and Jalapenos. Happy birthday Miss Marie, you don't look 23, you could easily pass for 21, how do you do it? :) :) :) :)
Its not as mad as seeing a snail and thinking mmmmm that looks tasty. and dont even start on frogs legs. It goes back so far in time, a time when 8lbs of cheese cost an arm and a leg.,
Just so you know currently the cheese wheel is not real cheese anymore the police department in Gloucestershire visited the manufacturer and told them they can’t supply cheese for the cheese rolling events anymore due to health and safety concerns so the cheese roll was replaced by a rubber cheese wheel which the winner swops for the real cheese later on
This is crazy. For once it's not us Americans doing the crazy activity. But America still has bull ridding, demolition derbies and professional wrestling. I hope no one got hurt. But does look fun to watch. Happy Birthday. BTW: How soon is your Holiday request list coming out?
Marie loads of sports are dangerous (Rugby, Cricket, Football, Motor Racing, Horse Racing). I'm sure there must be French sports where you can be hurt (Snail Hunting maybe or the Tour de France or......well that's all I've got on French sports I'm afraid 🙄). If you think this is wild might I suggest you check out the Isle of Man TT Races. The guys who race there really are crazy.
I must correct you about something. At the end you mentioned your other channel and said you put some good stuff on there. That is not correct. You put some GREAT stuff on there! 😁
I am with you Marie, it is pointlessly crazy but so are many other things that humans do. I would rather spend an afternoon eating Roquefort, Comte, Cantal and Saint Maure accompanied with a bottle of rose and some charcuterie.
Bonjour, British eccentricity at it's weirdest , I've never witnessed it myself,it seems there's a thin line between courage & stupidity , surely nobody' s gonna eat that cheese are they 🤭 Britain has its fair share of such traditions, snokering in the mud ,they probably go back centuries when people had to think up ways to entertain themselves, but Gloucestershire does have beautiful countryside & villages, you might also be interested in warrior Princess jousting challenges , they also take place on rivers in France. Thanks again until next time 🧀 💜 🇬🇧
Tbh we played rougher games than this as kids 🤷♀️ if brits get hurt we just kind of get on with it. I don't like cheese myself so I wouldn't run down the hill except of it was for fun with the family
i feel sorry for the beautiful cheese. pray no cheese get hurt.
Looks like that would be some muddy cheese by the time it stopped rolling.

Yes, they’re crazy. Some of us Brits are just insane. This is a very unexpected reaction video, Marie! I laughed when I saw the title. I’ve never been to see it in real life. I hope you had a wonderful birthday!
What's insane is that the cheese hit 75mph
"Are they crazy?"
"No, they are just Briitsh."
"O, that makes sense."
I guess that is safer than running with the bulls in Spain lol.
It's one of our silly old traditions brits do anything for a laugh

Yep, 969. It should be made a legal bye law, everywhere in the whole world, forthwith.
Hello. Miss Marie !!!! Hail to the cheese yet After My Day I am Going to Fall down now !!! 😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄
What a friend we have in cheeses.

I’m from Birmingham Uk and Gloucestershire isn’t too far away. I have a friend that tried Coopers Hill in 2015 and he broke a leg!!! Mad english 😀😀
Love the story of the woman that won the cheese even though she finished the race unconcious. She only found out later that she won in the medical tent after waking up.
Happy birthday Marie! Hope it's a great one. Loved your reaction! "Just come to France and eat some cheese." 😆
Here in Holland and over there in France, we can just go to the store to get some cheese. Safely.
That's no fun 😂😂😂
In the UK if you see a strange tradition and ask "why?" there's a good chance that the answer is simply "Why not?"
One day this will be an Olympic event.
I thought I saw Raygun busting some moves halfway down!
Yes... it does appear that they ARE crazy!
Their parents must be very proud! 😂 Some crazy participants! I hope they heal quickly - god bless them. :0) 🐺

“It's wrong somehow.” Yes, it is. Your cheesy senses are keen. Never play with the cheese!
As a lover of cheese i find it completely acceptable to chase a wheel of cheese down a hill
If there’s one thing that cheeses me off, it’s wasted cheese.
I am Dutch, so you would think I would go after 15 kg of Gouda, but after a few beers I would go after a brown smelly Camambert actually....
they have a bottle of wine, but forgot to pickup some cheese...so of course, what else would you do when you absolutely need wine & cheese!
One of the things French people and British people agree on is: Cheese is fucking amazing, and do not waste it!!

The people in Wisconsin are really upset about this eh? The Wisconsin state motto is Eat Cheese or Die.
The French may enquire 'Pourquois?'
The English will respond: 'Pourquois pas?'
Hard to believe it is real. It looks like something from Monty Python.

Joyeux anniversaire! Yes, people are crazy, but it does look like fun in a strange way. Très bizarre.
I'd go for it if I lived in a place where the costs of potential injury were covered. In my good 'ol American home, though? No way 😅

That was funny and dangerous but the downhill portion of those videos were speeded up to make it look funnier. Stay well and be safe.
Why do they do it? Well I did it just for the bragging rights.
The slope is about 45°. The camera doesn't really show this.

There's no explanation it started years ago and just carried on
Coming from Quebec makes me sad to see this cheese wasted. Could make alot of poutine with that. Lol
Mate how is the cheese wasted, it can still be eaten after you've hunted it down 😜
Whoever makes it to the bottom first winds the cheese, so nothing's wasted 😛

It has been won by many nationalities but never a French person. We are un-surprised.
Why…because we're British!
