People who've never lived there have no idea how important the train was. Anyone who says "just maintain the roads and take your car" has never tried to drive in the north in the winter, let alone live there.

I think about home too..its our history there that the gov got rid of. Then started tearing down stations that was our heritage as well. Ive nevwr understood them doing that! I cried in my home town qhen they dud that and we had one of the biggest stations, a restaurant and round table and shops to fix engines. .those big steam engines going in and out of the round house left a mark in a childs heart forever.

Its hard to bring a cancelled provincial rail service cancelled by the Liberals-NDP Coalition (Ontario) in 2010s. Since you need to negotiate with CN/CP and federal government for signal priority and operating agreements.

just take it this is the aftermath of selling CN. CN used to have rails cover remote areas similar with what Air Canada did before privatization.
After privatization they all cut those remote services that can't generate profits. And taxpayers just pay extra to maintain the service.

I thought the line from North Bay to Cochrane (and Moosonee) is owned by ONR not CN.

I took it once. It was horrible. It was like I got teleported to 1980s Romania (where I was born and grew up). I could not believe this was Canada in the 2000s but with all that said, at least there was a train. Now, there's @#$% all. We are absolutely terrible in this country with infrastructure. I want to go do a trail in Northwest Territories and I gotta get to Norman Wells from Toronto. So, good @#$%ing luck to me getting there! We're so behind in infrastructure compared to other "1st world countries" that it is really shameful.

It's embarrassing, really. We call ourselves a 'developed' nation here, but we don't even have sufficient inter-city transit across Canada in general - let alone trains.

I rode the Northlander (Toronto to Cochrane) and the Polar Bear Express (Cochrane to Moosonee) in 2010. I am a Brit living in London England. I was told the anti-rail, anti-subsidy Ontario Government made the decision to withdraw the Northlander because "we are not in the business of funding tourism" !!! Their decision failed to take into account the needs of the local people. The Polar Bear Express was only retained because there is no road access from Fraserdale to Moosonee (250 miles). However, because there is a road on the southern section, they withdraw the Northlander and made everyone go by bus. The Northlander used to take 12 hours. It was safe, comfy, reliable, and had a dining car. The bus takes 15-16 hours subject to snow. It is less safe, less environmentally friendly, less comfy, less reliable has no dining car. You get the picture.
I think the chap who said one train a day is hardly a luxury, but the nail on the head. Well said.
    Canadians deserve better !

I mean, yes, inter city train travel in my country Croatia isn't good enough, some part of the tracks are in bad shape and you ride about 2 hours longer than if you'd take car through the highway. VIA looks superficially better, because you can reach Toronto from Montreal in a less time than if you would drive. But at least we have railway tracks to many rural and remote areas and inland towns. On the other hand, bigger cities in Quebec and Ontario like Trois Riviers, Sherbrooke, Granby, St Thomas and so on don't have railway option at all. Now when I put it all together, I think this is way more important.

It's tough because the further away from a city the less return on investment you get on road maintenance. Suburbs are already a massive drain since there's nothing generated from their existence.

These Nick Purdon pieces are such sappy factually-vacuous waste. Why was the line taken away? How much does it cost to operate. How many people did it service? You can interview somr people too but what the hell is this car accident counter-factual nonsense. Highschool newspaper level garbage.

Transportation is like education and healthcare, the benefits are to the whole community and the economy. It's hard to understand this if you look only at the costs of the services themselves. If the people interviewed here were the only people affected, you might have a point, but they're just a couple examples of a much bigger systemic problem. This topic is not covered in very many high school newspapers or classes, but it should be.
