With Opeth , and Mikael's harsh vocals, treat them like opera. Each voice is a character , and the harsh vocals as the antagonist. This song is part of a story ( almost all Opeth songs are stories) as the songs before it set it up lyrically ,and thematically. What's so amazing is it's the same singer ,and yes he does it live . Beautifully.

I find it weird how this song is 50% beautiful instrumentals, 40% clean singing and only 10% growling, and everything that woman commented on was just the growling. 🤦♂️
The album is a story about where a man's soul goes after murdering his mother and the devil having a part in it... demonic possession, regret, remorse and suicidal thoughts. You almost have to listen to it in its entirety - its dark subject matter but a worthwhile musical journey, you just have to listen to it all ❤️
I've heard growling bands before, but Opeth is something else. Definitely my all time favourite. The easiness of changing pace and structure of the song is unbeatable.
Opeth is when you graduate of years of metal. When you are just getting your feet wet with metal, Opeth can be a jump for most. That being said, after you tasted all spices of different metal and want something complex, smooth, interesting, and epic, then Opeth is your dish. They are progressive, jazzy, heavy at times, and very melodic. A lot of their songs have enough interesting riffs to make an album for most artists. They are also the kings of demon/angel voice dynamic (jinjer is the modern version now of that dynamic), and transitions and transpositions.
They’re grown-up. They make serious, clever music for smart people. And as many reaction videos like this one prove, even people who don’t like the some of the details of it realise that they’re listening to a substantial, mature, consequential piece of art.
Its not about depresion. You must know the album is a concept one and has a whole chronological order, like a movie. Harlequin Forest is in the middle of the story, so to get it from scratch in order: The first song is called, “Ghost of Perdition”. The story start in a small cottage where a young man is actually witnessing his mother who struggles with her sanity become possessed. The young man is tempted by the devil to surrender his soul, but because he is seeing her become possessed the young man refuses. The possession takes the mother so badly that the son murders her to release her from the grasp of the demon… The second song is called, “ The Baying of The Hounds”. The young man is condemned for murdering his mother by the town’s people and they release the town dogs to track him. Occasionally through this song the devil speaks to the young man attempting to torment him for murdering his own mother. He slips in and out of what appears to be a dream like state feeling that maybe he is dead… The third song is called, “Beneath the Mire”. The devil speaks louder now. He flees into a mire(HE DID WHAT?!) and hides from the hounds. Townspeople die by sinking in the mire while searching for him and he begins to feel more powerful. The young man begins to feel that he might be possessed himself… The fourth song is called, “Atonement”. Here the man is able to clear his head and he repents for what he has done. He feels that he has received forgiveness for what he has done, but he knows that he will never be able to justify it… The fifth song is called, “Reverie/Harlequin Forest”. The townspeople have picked up the young man’s trail again and are now fully chasing him. He flees into a forest(NO WAY!) and while hiding he finds himself in a situation where he has to murder one of the people to keep from being discovered. The young man suddenly feels the power again. He begins to see that he has no way of life other than running and murdering to survive. The young man sets fire to the forest and kills not only all the trees, but all the townspeople as well… The sixth song is called, “Hours of Wealth”. The young man has found a home in a new town, but feels like a stranger and alone at all times. The longer that he’s there, the more that he doesn’t speak to anyone. He retreats into his mind and slowly starts to feel insane. It is revealed that the devil is biding his time with the man… The seventh song is called, The Grand Conjuration”. The young man, feeling completely alone, turns to the devil and surrenders his soul. The man goes on a murdering spree and destroys everyone around him to build the army of satan stronger… The eight and final song is called, “Isolation Years”. A letter is discovered that was written by the mother, who is revealed to be a woman named Rosemary. The letter states that she will die alone and seems to be coherently written. The letter details that Rosemary knew her son was gone, even though his physical body was still there. It is discovered that the letter was written while she was murdered by her son due to stains of blood, which are essentially right where his name is written on the letter. This all reveals that the young man was actually the one struggling with a demon, while his mother was documenting it while also knowing that she would end up losing her life.
I think you would enjoy some new Opeth (from the last four albums)...all clean vocals, they transitioned away from death metal to more 70's inspired bluesy/folky/jazzy prog rock. Listen to "Eternal Rains Will Come", "Moon Above Sun Below", "Heart in Hand", "Universal Truth"
That video is needlessly flashy and it probably would have been a better introduction for her if it had been the live performance at Royal Albert Hall, where Mikael starts off with some joking around with the audience
when I first got into metal I couldn't listen to growls or screams in general because it's hard to like something you're not used to, it only took time for me to get into it. also that album is a concept album so that's part of a whole story.
I remembered how I used to be against growling/harsh vocals until I started watching reactions channels of people of different music preference and stereotypicial views on metal who wanna open their minds and explore new geners which usually is becomes focused on metal since it's the furtests from the music they enjoy. Through that I could relate to what they were saying, their prespectives been listening to different music and never given metal a chance. But as they were more open minded to it than I was I learned new perspectives. It was hard at first for both them and me, but they kept pushing, reacting to more requests and with time and extra help from the comments to understand the context and purpose of harsh vocals taking the theme of the song, the lyrics and vibe of the music itself I learned to appreciate it's use and effect. This was years ago. I now love it! Metal and especially death metal is my favorite genre. There are good and bad harsh vocals, I have my limits and preferences with that too. I prefer growl over screamo/screech, though there are exceptions to that too. But generally speaking. I rather hear a demon lord than a rabid zombie xD But context is everything to understand why things has it's place in whatever it is.
Enjoyed the reaction, though Opeth’s stuff is definitely much more heavier than bands such as Slip Knot and other screamo bands imo, especially songs such as Deliverencd
It's funny. I've been listening to metal for several decades and I almost had a "this is freaking me out but I like it" reaction to growling at the very beginning of my metal journey. Now, it is just apart of my everyday playlists. I have a friend that gets turned off to music when he hears singing. It will be screaming throughout and then a singing part comes in and he checks out. lol.
Chod, Can you please do a reaction to David Gates 1978 hit love song titled - Goodbye Girl since I know you and your wife will really enjoy listening and reacting to this great love song. David Gates voice sounds wonderful on this song and his voice goes well with the music. This song is from his solo career after the band Bread broke up. If you enjoy Bread's music then you will love this song also.
Operh songs are mostly stories with multiple characters, or at least multiple moods. Some of these are dark and even evil, and they require a vocal style that can communicate this. Akerfeldt’s notmal singing voice is too clean and pure, hence the need for his dark/growled persona.
Please stop caliing these vocals "screamo", as it is a sub-genre of emo (and almost an insult). Also most of the reactions to complicated prog-metal tracks in which the non-metalhead girlfriend/wife is a guest, the whole thing becomes cringe (I watch reactions to see someone else appreciate what I already like; if I wanted to watch someone suffer listening to it, I'd just play it for my 70 year old aunt). If you intend to react to such music with your partner, at least ask the community (that supports that specific band) for songs that can at least ease her into the experience! She'll be more likely to enjoy it and the video won't be cringe for her or the audience. Either way, thank you both for taking the time to react to this.
What would she say about greatest instrumental all time, well the lyrics are pretty weak .What there is something else going on. Oh,its music.Well thats not important.

I guess I'm just splitting hairs at that point. However, I would suggest they go to the beginning with Orchid, Morningrise, and My Arms Your Hearse before the others. Yes, the albums released directly after these three are what catapulted them into the limelight, but (personally) hearing the absolute best of a band upon jump....it's difficult to appreciate the "road less traveled" as much as you hoped you could. Sorry if that doesn't make sense. And I don't want to seem like I'm attacking you, just my personal opinion, my friend.
