I had no idea this existed and thought it may be a 1993-95 release date with a single speed CD ROM drive, but 2006? This is crazy for its release date. Who thought it would be a big hit? They may as well have released an Intellivision 3 instead.
"This came out in 2006, when people still used CDs" Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't people still using CDs in 2021? I mean, we even still have vinyl and cassettes have been making a comeback in recent years.
Sega United I had edited my reply a few times last night but maybe somebody somewhere still cares about this thing. Who knows who’s watching? I’m probably one of the last game developers around that knows anything about the underlying architecture even 13 years on. I didn’t design this hardware, so I cannot speak for Mattel’s decisions, but I oversaw development of our studio’s own game engine (which we ported to this chip) and on many 2D platforms of that era. I could speak to the challenges presented abstractly without revealing too many specifics but this isn’t the right forum. 😉
10:54 DANGER ROOM!!! haha. Great vids. ;) P.S. Can I please have a job there? lol I have board-level repair experience with TV, VCR, CD, DVD, Blu Ray, and retro computers / consoles, and would be willing to move nearer the museum. It would be a dream job for me I reckon. I have a fair bit of experience with the good old Quantel Painbox too, and love machines like the Speccy, Beeb, Archie, Amiga, C64, SGI etc.
Thanks! Of course you can have a job here!! The salary is quite low though - Adrian gets paid around £8 a month, and Phil gets substantially less ! In fact he pays us!! :) But in all seriousness, we are a charity with very limited funds so we ave to rely on people volunteering to help repair our machines.
Haha. Yeah, I thought that might be the case tbh. Jason mentioned it a few times, and I realise that most of it is volunteer work. It's nice to have a dream, though. lol :p I would even happily volunteer if I had a way to stay / live nearer.
No, that’s “Intellivision” that has the new console coming out (the Amico). Mattel and Intellivision have had no affiliation with each other since the mid 1980’s.
@@OriginalGrasshopper fab thanks for the reply. that hyperscan thing looked like a total piece of ****. I am looking forward to the Amico but think it is a bit pricey at launch.
Well you lasted longer playing it than I did. You can see what they were aiming for just a shame they missed the mark big time. Only a few years later we get sky landers a similar concept but a lot more fun.
Sorry bout the console lads; but I've been checking the web. Knowing as these consoles break like a window made of thin ice against the hulk, your fists or the car door as I'm guessthing that's what you did with the console after this video was made years ago, I got to ask; has anyone attempted to tear the system apart for kicks? Maybe show off why it's so bad such as the processor, graphics card or the type of RFID reader it's using the swap data with it's cards?
This came out when the Xbox 360 and PS3 had just started. So yeah, clearly the Hyperscane clearly won. Nope, it clearly lost. I agree with that one guy and in saying that the Hyperscane needed to be in the trash. :)
I have heard that there is no copy protection or lockout feature on the system which means that you can code a game and burn it on a CD and play it. LOL They didn't even care to protect the games or console in any way to prevent unlicensed software from playing on the device.
I remember Hyperscan the first time it was at the toy store so it is made for children there was also Spiderman handheld Something like Tiger Electronics. So they are made for should therefore they were cheap.😅
The whole idea of the cards is a scam. All of the characters are actually present on the disk for the game, but they are locked until you unlock them with the paid cards. So it's a paid early version of dlc.
Spent endless hours playing this console with my nephew's. We never realized it sucked.
Is your nephew in rehab now?
You ruined his childhood.
Poor bastard
Mattel also made the Intellivision, so there's that at least.
And also the Power Glove for the NES and like the Hyperscan it discontinued less than a year
Doesn't that make it worse? They made something better DECADES before that book with readable cards.
I think this would've been cool to give to a kid that didn't have a console for Christmas in 2006

it's like a bad early ps1 game meets the barcode battler. It could have been a decent idea a few years earlier, if the implementation wasn't so bad.
The collecting aspect was pretty fun when boosters were marked down and everywhere.
Exact same thing happened with me and Crazy Bones
"It's loading" - the most common phrase of the video.
Mattel why? I really want a documentary to explain how this thing was concieved!!!
Mattel hate Marvel I guess.

You speak the truth.
If you think playing it is painful I had to develop on this monstrosity. We pulled the plug on our project early.
Why exactly did Mattel develop and make this poor excuse of a half baked toy sold and passed off as a Console?
Looks like you deleted your response.
Are you STiLL under NDA after 13 years?

Do you take requests? How about that Elite game sitting behind you! :D
Thanks for the review. So interesting to see. Plus they have a new console out in October. It promises to bring people back together. Hmmm

For £60 at the time you probably could have bought a second hand GameCube. I know which one I'd prefer
yeah
mario is lame!
The Mattel HyperScan or the second hand GameCube and, if possible, why?

Another excellent video - I continue to like and subscribe.
This machine looks just a little tedious to use.
Just a little? I'm not convinced.
