In case you're unaware, this is a full blown sequel. No, you cannot comfortably play this without playing Trails from Zero as this is literally part 2 of the Crossbell arc.
That said, Azure is the 5th game in the Trails story. Yes, they are all connected and are part of a continuous epic, split into arcs. You should play the first 3 games of Sky/SC/The 3rd before starting this arc.
I beated the sky trilogy,zero,and all 4 cold steel series not yet hajimari and the 2 kuro games

As crossbell tells a totally different story with a new cast
@@yass3425 You are wrong, as it takes place after the original trilogy but continues the overarching plot. Again, Crossbell focuses on a different set of characters because it is a different arc, but it is still the same story. If you want the whole story, it is mandatory.
So much so in fact, let's not forget who shows up in Crossbell, what they're looking for, and what comes of it. Things you'd only understand if you play the first three games. Not to mention characters from both arcs show up later arcs, expecting you to have knowledge of what happened in earlier arcs.
thanks for the headsup. this game has my full interest on trying. I love me some good jrpgs as of recent. right now thanks to a friend I'm going through the grandia series for my first time and loving it so far. this series is definitely going ot be added to my list.

Really though, what a massive disservice to yourself to skip so much of the story. You wouldn't start a Netflix show on season 2, you know?
As for starting on Cold Steel, it seems a lot of the western audience started there. Makes sense. Still, Imagine starting CS1 and not knowing what's happening in Crossbell. Having that frame of reference made starting CS1 hype.
Best game in the Trails series. If you've only got a Nintendo Switch you can still play the first 3 games (Trails in the Sky 1-3) on literally any PC that can run windows and then play the 4th game Zero on the switch before this. Jealous of everyone playing this for the first time it's a masterpiece.
I've been going reaaaally slowly through Trails in the Sky 1 for the 1st time (talking to every NPC every time). It's just ok so far, but the high expectations for future games keep me going.
@@cuac232 Its slow at the start because all the npcs have something to stay, but it just keeps building and building. Sky 1 and 2 collectively is one of my favorite rpg's, and all the sequels following games are amazing.
I didn't start playing Zero until last week just because I wanted to sort of have this seamless experience because I do dumb things

Got this game a day early yesterday... Yall before you say "ugh another jrpg" Trails to Azure (and its prequel Trails from Zero) are some of the best written jrpgs ive played. Please, even on sale, give them a try!

It really is. Its entry 5 in the series of one the best, most engaging rpg's ever made.
Trails in the Sky 1 and 2 is one of the best rpgs ever, and they continue very well with Sky 3, Zero and Azure.
After Azure is the Trails of Cold Steel series, 1-4.
Trails of the Sky series is on Steam and the PSP/Vita, and now, all the others are on main consoles.

@@dustingonzalez8080 Falcom is hinting of a Sky remake (not remaster like zero & azure) in the future so we don't need to get XSeed's permission when that happens

The game is incredible. I haven’t played Suikoden so I can’t comment there but I can say you shouldn’t start with this game, as it’s the direct sequel to the game Trails from Zero, so if you don’t play that, you will be incredibly lost
Zero and Azure collectively are also the second arc in the series after the Trails in the Sky trilogy, so it’s usually recommended to play that trilogy first
Trails of Cold Steel 4 and Trails into Reverie has a character roster that gives Suikoden a run for its money.
The cast isn't quite as bloated as Suikoden, although if you play the entire series it gets like that, difference being all of the characters have a backstory

Because there might be some people who haven't played Zero (or cold steel 2) yet.
If I hadn't played Zero Evo years ago, or Cold steel 2, then that Would've been a spoiler for myself.
Best Arc and Game in the series

no. But you should not start with this one either, since it's a direct sequel from zero. Either start at Sky FC and go Sky FC -> Sky SC -> Sky 3rd -> Zero ->Azure -> then Cold Steel 1->4 -> Reverie, or skip the first part and start at Zero-> Azure-> same order. There's no point in waiting the other games as they'll be released before you're done with what is already out.

@@MrKittyhead Falcom didn't communicate about abaout releasing the other older games on switch. And Sky was translated by XSEED, which no longer do trail games, so I doubt they would come back just for switch versions.
So sky probably will need a PC to play no matter how long you wait. Even a potato is enough for them though.

This game actually takes place before Cold Steel 3 and 4 (more specifically it takes place around the same time as cold steel 2) and yes, Campanella does appear
It takes place during the latter half of Cold Steel 1 then the final chapter takes place during Cold Steel 2 and ends at the same time as Cold steel 2

as difficult and expensive as i know it is, i still wish they gave this duology an english dub. i mean they have actors for these characters cast in cs and reverie and the dubs for the trails games are so good
Budget is probably the reason as to why no dub.
Since the Japanese dub in this game is NOT representative of the original version of this, but the EVO version which i think Kadokawa was main publisher of, licensing that was probably expensive and ate most of the VO budget. So it probably came to an executive decision of remove the jpn VO for an English only, go mainly English while retaining the original PSP voicelines (which was character introductions and battle lines only, iirc, not the whole main story), or JPN only.
Do I have to play other games to understand this?
Yes this is a sequel to Trails from Zero. I recommend playing Trails in the Sky Trilogy before these two games but if you don't wanna spend hundreds of hours playing them you can watch story summary videos
Just play the previous game: Trails from Zero.
Azure is a direct sequel and it makes no sense to start here.

Can anyone play this one as their first entry to this series? Or should I play some other multitude of games before picking this one?
This is a sequel to Trails from Zero so I recommend you at least start from that game. But if you are really interested the best experience is playing Trails in the Sky Trilogy on PC first before Trails from Zero. Potatoes can run them and they are also considered great JRPGs out there. It's a slow burn though so a patient mindset is required
Not even close to being a good entry point lol this is a direct sequel to Trails from Zero so start there then play this one.
And just like Trails From Zero, the Switch version is notably superior to the PS version. Better textures, more features and QoL improvements, and of course, with the hybrid advantage

If you like adventure and Rpg's, I would HIGHLY recommend the series, starting with the most legendary entries Trails in the Sky 1 and 2 on Steam/PSP/Vita.
It is more engaging then almost any rpg/adventure game I've ever played, and I've played countless.
The first 5 games are Trails in the Sky 1, 2, 3, Trails in Zero and Trails in Azure.
Sweet, another game I will never play in my life!

And it used to have the most generic games ever....until a new story started with "Trails in the Sky" 1 and 2 came out, with a perfect 100/100.
And every game after that has been pure gold.

@@zucumberzeez I highly recommend it. I was blown away by the quality of the games. I had never heard of the Trails series before I played it, it wasn't well known even in Japan for a long time, the company that made it was most famous for the YS franchise, while the Legend of Heroes games unrelated to the current ones were mostly subpar.
Then suddenly Trails in the Sky 1 and 2 come out and WHAM, suddenly an rpg game comes out with a combination of some of the best elements of chrono trigger, ff7 and the best tales games. Its starts out slow as many rpgs do but then you become more and more engrossed in the giant world and amazing characters. And games never drop in quality, its a grand scale story.
What's generic in English is really cool in Japanese (maybe).
Eiyuu Densetsu: Ao No Kiseki.
It's been around since the late 80's though so it probably wasn't so generic back then.
@@9751matt I've heard different. I heard that the 3 legend of Heroes games before Sky (White witch, tear of vermillion, song of the ocean) were actually very well written, in Japanese. But the western localization was bad. Very bad.

I know right? Its the exact opposite, but it tricks you because it has retro graphics and old Heroes games WERE boring...
... but Trails in the Sky 1, 2, 3, Zero, and Azure suddenly came out with a 10/10 without a single moment of boredom.
It feels like a hybrid of Chronotrigger and FF7 at times.
If I played zero can I play this without playing the sky trilogy? I have really bad scoliosis so I can’t play games comfortably on my pc so I can’t play sky trilogy until I can afford steam deck.
it's not ideal but yes you can
You can play in the TV streaming from the PC (Steam link if you want to use a steam solution) and even use a joystick, i have a similiar problem and do this some times.
It's fine for the most part but you won't enjoy Sky trilogy as much once you go back to it, I still recommend starting there and like the other dude said, just steam link the sky games to your tv/phone.
If you played Zero, yes its fine to play this
If you have a laptop, you could run the Sky games well enough on them. Any laptop from 2010 onward would be able to play the Sky games easily. Any laptop from 2005 onward would likewise be decent.
Story is basic and long winded for anyone who is on the fence
There's a reason it's called a Story RPG (and advertised as such)
If you don't like reading that fleshes out characters and World Building, you won't like these games.
