Call it a luck or whatever but I didn't pull a trigger on the TP version on Discogs and thank God for that. While I was eyeing one at $190, one seller there had an on-opened copy selling at over $340, which is absolutely crazy. Bought it 2 months ago from Blue Note direct, paid just shy of $39, glad I didn't jump on a silly aftermarket pricing. Thank you BN for restocking this and to re-set those pesky flippers and speculators.

Patience is the key with these Tone Poets. I know the hype can make us take rash decisions. I'm so glad you resisted and got it at a fair price. I noticed when updating my store listings that several Tone Poets are back after a long absence. The link is in every description or you can click here to browse!

Im sorry to hear that. I haven't heard of that being reported before. It's not especially demanding in that section, so it must have been a bad stamper? I'm sure you cleaned it, but did you try adjusting anti skate or tracking force? These settings can drift over time and a fresh look at them might do the trick. Hey Scott, where to start ? What else can be said ? I love your intro "Well, it's here". I've had the CD of C. Baker Sings on CD since 1998. I loved it. But now, I have a "grail" for me and sound like for you too ! It's so good, it's hard to describe, but you did it. When I received it, (I got it a couple of weeks ago, so happy I didn't have to wait until August 4th. I put the record on put my lamp on the low setting and let the music and his voice envelope me. I might have mentioned this before, I have my stereo in my bedroom. My turntable is on my night table next to my bed. It's very fitting, having my music with in reach whenever I want.
I have a thought: Have you ever considered doing a Desert Island Disc video(s) ? I think that would be a great way for us to know what your selections might be and for you to know what your viewers are. I'll bet you'd get a ton of comments of what your audience likes. Just a thought. Anywho, keep up the fine vids. Talk to you soon.....Johnny K.

That is the perfect way to listen to this. Late night, low light, in the sweet spot, and just letting this record unfold. No distractions, just you and Chet. It's really something special.
I have done a few videos I put into a series called Records To Die For. It's sort along the idea of desert island discs, but I covered each entry separately. The criteria there is great music, top notch sound and things I return to again and again, never failing to be impressed all over again. Perhaps I'll try a collection of titles for a future installment.
Thank you for this great comment and continuing to support and encourage me. I really appreciate that.

His vocal style is definitely polarizing - I always try to mention this and urge people to audition carefully. It really comes down to personal taste - there's no right or wrong. Many people rave about Nina Simone, and I'm still trying to appreciate her vocals. I'm sure that's surprising to many people. That's why I've held off on reviewing the two Acoustic Sounds releases. I'm hoping one day it will click with me, but as of yet, I just can't get into it. It's probably similar with Chet Baker. Im glad you took time to give your opinion on it.

@@ThePressingMatters In my older age, (I'm about your age), I think the sensible thing to do is to listen to more of your favorites. Albums that are merely good, take around 45 minutes of your time, at a time when you don't have as many 45 minute intervals as you had in your youth. If I have 20 or more years left, I'd like to spend my time playing predominantly recordings that I enjoy at a B- to A+ enjoyment level. I personally rarely bother with better pressings; unless it's one that is really lacking and really important to me. I do occasionally go back to records that I only played a few times and thought I liked, and thought there was potential for it to become a real favorite. I do think looking for new music should be part of the equation; but you waste a lot of time doing that.

Nice review and agree a great, great record. Have a semi rough OG copy, and a 2nd press King Record Japan pressing. Sonically the King blows away the OG. The King Records copy was the best I had heard until I got the tone poet copy. The Tone Poet does not blow away the King pressing but does edge it out on sonics. On this title and other Tone Poets, you can certainly hear the improvements in Kevin's recent upgrade to his mastering signal path. Much more of that tape type sound comes through to the vinyl on all the tone poets and other recent work he has been doing. Its too bad Sterling sound does not make a similar signal chain upgrade. This title and "Chet" are two titles I have never tired of listening to.

@@ThePressingMatters No problem. Pacific Jazz titles were pressed for the UK market by Decca Records in England. Not sure how King Records ended up with the pressing contract but my guess is Decca in England had some good things to say about them. Pacific Jazz was already working with Decca UK to cut and press Pacific Jazz titles for the English market. Decca was also working with King Records to issue the Decca Classical catalog for the Japan market. When Pacific Jazz went to King, the very first JPN releases had lacquers cut by Decca in England. The lacquers were plated and pressed by King in Japan. The first few Japan issued Pacific Jazz releases were done with a London label artwork. by the early 1970s King was quite expert at lacquer cutting so they sourced the artwork for the Pacific Jazz labels and re-issued these several times. After Pacific Jazz was absorbed in the Capitol conglomerate, the pressing contract was moved from King Records to Toshiba-EMI for the Japan market. But the King pressings usually sonically edge out the Toshiba-EMI pressings of the same title. I don't have a Toshiba-EMI pressing of Chet sings, so can't offer a direct comparison. In Japan both the King and Toshiba pressings are easier to find than the US OG pressing. Its also important to remember that US interests in Jazz music had really faded by the late 1960s and 1970s. Quite the reverse in Japan. Japan record buyers were crazy for US jazz releases. On many of the smaller US jazz labels, some of the pressing runs for the US market could not have been more than 1500 to 2500 copies. In Japan pressing runs of 5K and 10K were common on jazz titles. Another really good example is the Contemporary Jazz label. OGs are pretty tough to find. The titles released as OJC titles are much easier to locate. But King pressed tons and tons of Contemporary titles so they are: 1. not too tough to find, 2. their sonic qualities are usually quite good, 3. pretty easy to find in nice condition, and 4 they are usually pretty inexpensive.

@@mcgjohn22Excellent information. It's interesting how Japan picked up on jazz from this period and were so immersed in what was an American art form. Like a lot of American vintage hifi gear, original US pressings of jazz records also were highly in demand in Japan. It's not surprising than King took on jazz titles for that market.

Great Insights Scott. I've held off on purchasing the record being that I don't possess a mono cartridge. I've never had great experiences playing my mono records on my system. What are your thoughts on playing mono records ( Chet Baker Sings specially) with a stereo cartridge?

I'm my current system (listed in the description) I feel no need for a mono cartridge. It would be difficult to switch out for me anyway. But I'm getting great results with the mono setting on my phono preamp. This record sounds beautiful with the Hana ML and mono switch.

      Robert,
Do you have a mono switch on your preamp or phono preamp? If not, that may be why the results are not optimal. I think a mono cartridge would be desirable if one had a large collection of original mono records. For modern mono reissues, a stereo stylus and a mono switch should be fine. If you do not have a mono switch there is an inexpensive way to add a splitter involving two Y cables with RCA ends. I'll have to check exactly how it's done but I believe it's summing the two leads from your turntable to mono with a simple Y adaptor and then back out from mono to both leads with the opposite Y adaptor. If interested I'll try and locate the info and post it.

@@ThePressingMatters I did find the Y Cable formula yesterday while searching for a switcher. I have the Decware SE84UFO2.1 Zen Triode Amp. Decware does make a switcher with a mono function but after waiting nearly two years for my amp, which is outstanding btw, I decided to pass. I discovered another switcher, the Beresford TC-7240. I read a review by a customer that when into great detail using that box and the y cable splitter for mono. I ordered the box yesterday. Thanks for your attention on the subject. I'm sure its a common issue.

I play mono records all the time with my stereo cartridge (a Linn Troika on a Linn LP-12) and have great results. I have a mono switch accessible from the remote of my amplifier and I really don’t hear the difference whether the switch is engaged or not, except on noisy, worn pressings. As these reissues were cut with a stereo cutting head, I think your issues with mono pressings might have to do with cartridge alignment, especially azimuth. Have a pro check that before spending any money on new or additional gear.

I ordered this but I have the import version from Panam. This is a low cost reissue like Waxtime but sounds terrific. In fact, this version is on THE ABSOLUTE SOUND list. I have quite a few of these imports and most sound excellent. And the pressings are flat and quiet. Yes, they are from digital sources but who cares if they sound great. I think these imports have been unfairly maligned by those who have never tried them or just sampled one or two. Too many snobs in this hobby.

      Hi Eric,
Some people take to his vocals right away. I know I was immediately intrigued with them when I first heard them years ago. For me it was never a case of getting used to it or learning to appreciate it. I don't think they have come across better than what is heard here. I haven't yet explored the later era.

I think this is the perfect description of Chet’s voice, from a website that reviewed this release:
“Baker’s voice was unusual. Mellow, sonorous, and defined by a somnolent languidness, it also had a mysterious androgynous quality; those unaware of his singing style often thought Baker was female.”

    • @ThePressingMatters
      @ThePressingMatters  Рік тому

It is a perfect description of his voice. It's funny, just today I was talking about Chet's singing with my roommate and he had never heard it. He immediately was attracted to it and the one think he mentioned was that it sounded feminine. I don't hear it quite like that but androgynous might be a better description. I hear it as kind of a boyish charm. Love it.

Hi 👋 I like Chet Baker very much. I own a copy of it on cd. His trumpet playing is fantastic and his vocals are dreamy. I saw Miles Davis in concert in the 1980s. I personally think Chet was a far better trumpet player. You are right about his singing , he sang with emotion. I would have loved to have seen him in concert in the early 1950s. I saw the documentary about him titled Let's get Lost in the 1980s. I own a cd of the soundtrack. He was a very good looking guy too. Sad that he got addicted to heroin .

      Hi,
I recall reading that Chet was voted top trumpet player in Downbeat and other publications at the time. He had a lot of success at a very young age. Everything going for him, including his handsome appearance. I haven't gotten to much past the early 60's yet, but I look forward to exploring the later decades. His addiction issues are heartbreaking and I think knowing his life story makes this early record all the more poignant. Thanks so much for your observations on this unique artist.

@@ThePressingMatters Thanks for your reply. Everything you have said is true of Chet Baker. I went to a jazz gig here where i live here in New Zealand a few years ago. One member of the jazz group i saw told the audience he had met Chet in the 1970s. He knew of his drug addiction and said he looked ravaged by it. He still performed up to his death.
