  • During a 2002 week 2 NFL game between the Denver Broncos and San Francisco 49ers, the FOX affiliate in Rapid City, South Dakota, KEVN, was bombarded with complaints after they promised and ended up not showing the game. What followed was one of the dumbest television controversies in the history of the NFL on FOX

That newspaper got then-KEVN a ton of unnecessary phone calls. If I were that station's PD, I would've been pissed off. The person doing the paper's sports TV listings should've had a basic grasp on the NFL's TV rules of that era.

  • @BillGraper

I've always known the network rights, until it changed. CBS always had the AFC games, and FOX always had the NFC games. The interconference games went to the network whose team was AWAW, meaning if an AFC team was playing at an NFC team, CBS would have the rights. When that changed in recent times, I questioned it right away. They started a "cross-flex" system, which allows an away team to be flexed to the other network, so the two networks can have an equal amount of games. I noticed this immediately, and questioned it right away. I still remember saying, "Hey! Why is this game on FOX? The away team is an AFC team, so it should be on CBS!" I looked into it & found my answer.
In short, people generally aren't that observant. In 2002, if I had seen that game listed on FOX in the local paper, I would've questioned it immediately. It's funny how SO MANY people didn't know about the home/away rule, despite it being listed incorrectly in the paper. I guess a larger percentage of people don't pay attention to details like that.

    • @leogetz3570
      @leogetz3570 2 роки тому +2

Passive fans don't really know it, but us die hards would've know right away!! Also, I think the "cross-flex" thing was because networks would get the shaft some seasons, say if the NFC sucked one year and the best games were the AFC games, or vice versa. Basically, networks want an equal amount of competitive games.

I've actually noticed, over the last few seasons, that there have been lots of cases, in the regular season, of games that SHOULD be AFC games (for example games where the Chargers are the road team, being aired on FOX, and THE SAME DAY, a game where the Cowboys are the road team being aired on CBS. this is backwards, and seems to be happening on the regular. WTF?

I grew up in Chadron, Nebraska, 90 minutes south of Rapid City. A little further background that might help explain some of the outrage over this situation: KEVN was previously the NBC affiliate for Rapid City from the early 80s until the middle of 1996, when they announced that they were switching their affiliation to Fox. The announcement was made just a few weeks in advance, and the area was nearly left without an NBC affiliate heading into the fall. At the time NBC still held the rights to the AFC package, which meant that Rapid City was looking at not having an option to view the majority of Broncos games. A new station, KNBN, was founded just in time to pick up the NBC affiliation, though it had a lower-powered signal and didn't reach as far (certainly not the ~100 miles to Chadron). My guess is that on top of the error in the newspaper, a significant portion of the offended viewers had that change in the back of their minds as well.

It was shown later the defense the Pats had set up would have had running Marshawn Lynch shut down at the goal line. That's why they didn't do it.
In addition, there was at the time stories going around that if Lynch had scored the game winning touchdown, the NFL was going to heavily fine the Seahawks and take away draft picks because advertisers allegedly did not want Lynch winding up as Super Bowl MVP and trainwrecking post Super-Bowl advertising. While those were proven fans and were easily debunked, some actually believed that.

It used to be set up that way mainly so whoever (CBS/NBC, FOX/NBC, then CBS/FOX) would get a game from every stadium.
Then the Falcons had both their interconference home games (vs Patriots and Jets) in 2013 on in primetime so they didn't have a game on CBS that year, though they did have the first CBS cross-flex in 2014 against the Bengals
So now it's once again possible for both CBS and FOX to have a game from every stadium, especially with NFC/AFC designations going away next year

South Dakota is kinda divided evenly East and West by the Missouri River. Western SoDak, Wyoming, Utah, Western North Dakota, Southeast Idaho, and Eastern Montana tend to lean toward Denver teams. The rest of their states are a mishmash of Seattle, Minnesota, Vegas, and even Portland teams for sports some of those places only have a couple of teams of. Rapid City being in the Black Hills Region is 100% no matter how bad their teams. That is why the Rockies drew so many fans in 1993 and the shortened 1994 Seasons. Denver teams are truly the Rocky Mountain’s teams (well except for Utah in Basketball). Been that way for generations.

Interesting about 10:22, it was actually Broncos/Vikings in 2011 that was emergency flexed to FOX because they only had two games in the 1:00 slot otherwise after Lions/Saints went to SNF.
It was also Chiefs/Broncos in 2013, with a mega assist to injured Aaron Rodgers, that was flexed to SNF or else would have a stayed a 4:05 regional CBS game.
And tying the Niners back in here, Chiefs/Niners week seven will be the first AFC-designated 4:25 game on FOX
So you could say in a span of over ten years, we just had the four teams that changed NFL TV.

Sometimes ACTUALLY AIRING the "local" team can be just as infuriating, but not the network or affiliate's fault. Sometimes, it's the league itself. Case in point: December 2013. I live in Rochester, NY - Buffalo Bills Country. Because the Bills are an AFC Team, most of their games are shown on our CBS affiliate WROC-TV. Occasionally, a Bills game would be shown on the FOX affiliate WUHF-TV, but that's usually if a prominent NFC Team is the visiting team. Due in part to the NFL's Regional Action Broadcast rules, when FOX doesn't have a double-header that week, WUHF is almost always stuck showing the New York Giants game (or an NFC East rival's game if the Giants are on the road against an AFC opponent and CBS has the rights to it.
So why am I bringing up December 2013? Well, it was Week 16 of the regular season where games with playoff implications abounded - except for the aforementioned New York Giants who were dead last in the NFC East. As hard luck would have it, all the games on FOX with massive playoff implications were slated for the 1:00 pm window, whereas the Giants were set to face the also-eliminated Rams at 4:05 pm. Of course, WUHF's hands were tied; they were stuck airing the blandest, most meaningless game of the week. Unlike Rapid City, there is no alternative in Rochester. As is the case with most cities in America, some people who live here loathe the Bills and are into other teams - like the Giants, Jets, Patriots, Browns, or like myself, the Raiders. However, as I said before, THIS IS BILLS COUNTRY - hell, we even host Bills Training Camp every summer (except for recently due to COVID) - so trying to push the Giants as hard as the NFL insists on doing doesn't really make a lot of sense. One would think that given the marketing prowess of the NFL, the league would pick up on this detail after a decade or three, but nope. They keep trying to make The Giants happen around here - popularity, playoff implications, or sheer common sense be damned.
