I bought my first Rolex, a 2006 platinum Yachtmaster, in 2014 as a divorce anniversary gift to myself. I love the watch, it’s simplicity, elegant practicality, quality, value. I sailed 3500 nm from West Palm Beach to Mt Dessert Isle in ME and back to Annapolis (mostly solo) with this watch keeping my time the entire trip. It is one my few possessions and I cherish as well as my opportunity to pass it along to one of sons one day.

I own a 1976 Rolex Oyster Perpetual (no date) that keeps chronometer certified time which was plus or minus 4 seconds per day back in 1976. That outstanding accuracy gives me a huge feeling of satisfaction from a 46 year old timepiece!

  • @daveh9803

There are some amazingly accurate replicas out there. Rolex can always distinguish what isn’t theirs because they have their own foundry producing parts, using proprietary formulas. Broad spectrum photometry is like a fingerprint of metal composition. They can detect when an alloy isn’t meeting their secret specifications.

For those wondering what's with the re-upload:
Our original video had a small piece of content that went against UA-cam policies so we had to take it down. We worked really hard on making the best video we could and it would've been a shame if we were to not publish it again. We took the small part that was the problem out, solved the issue and now the video is back on our channel! The only think is, we had to re-upload!

My favorite is definitely the submariner. I bought the no-date submariner 2-1/2 years ago and its already selling for more than I paid for it. From what I understand that model is hard to come by, more demand than supply. No regrets. Such a great investment. I had always wanted one, ever since my dad got one in the late 60's. He probably paid around 3 or 4 hundred back then.

I paid only $1,600 about 8 years ago. I read that in that period, Rolex used 14 carat gold. Perhaps there was a recession. As you would know, on the face it is stated, "Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified."

I have been doing clocks and pocket watches for quite some time and started on the wrist watches two years ago. Didn't take long for word to spread and people with higher end non-working prizes called on me. I must say.......utterly AMAZED at the level of quality and detail inside one of these! Anyone who actually does service work would have no trouble spotting a fake if open the back. Thanks so much for sharing! These are cool facts to pass along to those I know. Thanks for sharing!

The first waterproof watch was exhibited at the Great Exhibition in London in 1851 by W. Pettit & Co. There are several patents from the 1800’s about water proof watches and screw down crowns. The early ones are of course pocket watches but there are advertisements of ”submarine” wrist watches that are waterproof in newspapers dating back as early as 1916.

how many watches do you need? get one and wear it daily. I prefer my rolex to an apple watch (received as a gift) but the things a smart watch can do is truly inspiring. though I enjoy my water proof sub mariner, the rolex takes 'licking and keeps on ticking"- oh yeah that's another 5 letter brand of watch .the apple watch did mot last as long. with the face seem to disconnect from the watch band - hanging by a cable? no desire yet to replace it- was a gift and happy with my Rolex. which does turn some heads- which is fine, by me and opens some doors. to conversation. I recall a couple of doctors thought it wasn't real.

    My favorite Rolex is mine.
GMT Master ll Black & Maroon, nicknamed the Coca-Cola.
Purchased new in December 1987 for the crazy prize of $1,200.
This video mentions price, but does not take into consideration the fluctuations in Exchange Rates from U.S Dollars and Swiss Francs. A weak Dollar means you need more of them to buy a Rolex.
One problem with my Rolex, it sat in a Safety Deposit Box for 10 years and the Luminous Dial no longer glows.

What fun. Beat this: in 1952 I bought a new Rolex Oyster at a U.S. Air Force PX in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, for $38. (At the same time, two friends of mine bought automatic Omega Seamasters for $65 as I recall.) My Oyster is no-date, manual wind. On the face it says on three lines, Rolex / Oyster / Shock Resisting. Even when new, a sort of patina was starting to spread from the center of the face. That has continued with a random pattern out to the gold number sticks. It looks much better than I make it sound. It had a leather strap. A few years later I bought a pre-owned period-correct bracelet for it, with a straight line where it joined the case, as opposed to curved. Right now it is being serviced, as I recall, for the first time. It was running fine, but my watchmaker friend says he is having to replace the pallet bridge (I think he called it), and must make a tiny correction to a generic one. I also have a pre-owned mid-seventies two-tone Datejust with Champagne face, gold stick numbers, serrated gold bezel, gold crown, and Jubilee bracelet, of 14 carat gold in that era as I understand. I gave my granddaughter the same in the Ladies model, a 2006 or so. Last, I bought a new no-date steel Submariner from an AD in about 2016. I have friends with many more and more costly Rolexes, but I am so happy to have the ones I have.
I have to Edit because I totally forgot that I received as a 30-year award from the same Arabian-American company an 18 c Day-Date with leather strap (it came with two). For a 35-year award, I was eligible for another with a gold bracelet, but I was in a period of depression, had no interest, and took instead a ridiculously small dollar alternative. I'm too embarrassed to tell you how little. There's no happy ending regarding this watch; I sold it for a stupidly small amount about ten years ago, why, I don't know as I didn't need the money.
If all this sounds like too much, I am 97 years old, and transferred to Arabia in 1952 already with 5 years service with an affiliate under my belt.
