I love how so many stories can be interpreted from the lyrics. Is it about a man who's come face to face with an actual Grim Reaper and is trying to beg for or buy his life back? About someone confronted by a debt collector or the yakuza, pleading with them not to kill him because he has a wife and kids? About a guy begging his mistress or an escort he had just paid for sex not to go away, because he is alone and miserable in his marriage? The lyrics are also vague in some parts, which, I think, is on purpose - like, for example, the line about the wife and kids, in original Japanese, could be interpreted as the POV character having a wife and kids, or whoever he's speaking to having a wife and kids, which paints the ""Where are you going?" line differently as a result ("Don't leave me to die, I have a family to take care of" or "Don't go away, you are abandoning your family"). It's a great song, the lyrics are unclear on what's going on, exactly, but the feelings of despair, abandonment and plea for life with a bleak outcome are very clear. Very poetic.
I think the lyrics are strongly based off of the rakugo story by the same name, it could be interpreted similar to the original rakugo but I also love that the lyrics allow it more interpretations as it never explicitly mentions too much regarding the original story. The lyrics definitely take inspiration but they're not too confined to the original so the interpretations of the meaning or narrative can be a lot looser which makes it a lot more interesting.
