  • Bruce Zawalsky, Author of Canadian Wilderness Survival, focuses on one important type of survival gear, Cold Weather and Winter Gloves. Proper insulated Cold Weather Gloves and Winter Gloves are essential pieces of extreme cold weather survival gear. Bruce explains why Gloves are an essential Survival Item that you need to carry with you to survive while stranded in the northern forest or mountains in cold weather. He covers types of insulation including synthetic, fleece, wool, and Thinsulate. Bruce talks about the types of gloves that are designed for survival in cold and extreme weather. He focuses on the differences between leather, suede, packcloth and nylon shells on gloves and why waterproofness and dexterity are important for gloves. Gloves are a massively underestimated part of any kit setup, regardless of the weather.
I have various mitt setups ranging from the issued kit we had in the British Army (all synthetic, not great quality) to a US pair that have woollen inners, with a canvas outer that had leather palms & thumbs. Very handy.
US Aircrew Winter Gloves are handy for light work in very cold temps but as you say, not waterproof at all, even if the palms & fingertips have light leather (or leather-like) covering.
Thinner leather working gloves are always on my belt but even a lighter civilian mitt can be useful albeit I tend to change out the flimsy nylon inners for a pair of good old fashioned woollen gloves.
In the temps here, I find that a good overall combination is the US Mitts, the woollen inners & keep the leather working gloves handy. It gives me enough warmth, dexterity & waterproofing for most conditions here - but as you said, without the ability to continue using your hands, then it turns into a pretty crappy day really quickly... 🖐🖐🖐👍

    Good stuff Bruce!
Do you see any use (or benefit) in wearing a thin merino wool base layer glove inside of one of those leather gloves?
If layering gloves, do you recommend the outer most glove/mitt being one size larger to allow enough space between layers to add warmth?
