- Attitude sent Ola Awosika to meet Wolf Pack Executive Producer, star, and bona fide gay icon, Sarah Michelle Gellar, to speak on the similarities between a pack and a chosen family, why the supernatural genre is the perfect place for authentic storytelling, and Sarah's relationship with the LGBTQ community.
Based on the book series by Edo Van Belkom, Wolf Pack follows a teenage boy and girl whose lives are changed forever when a California wildfire awakens a terrifying supernatural creature and drives it to attack a highway traffic jam beneath the burning hills. Wounded in the chaos, the boy and girl are inexplicably drawn to each other and to two other teenagers who were adopted sixteen years earlier by a park ranger after another mysterious wildfire. As the full moon rises, all four teens come together to unravel the secret that connects them - the bite and blood of a werewolf.

How do you NOT love Sarah Michelle Gellar...like, HOW?!
To me Buffy was not a gay icon because of the "coming out as a slayer" phase but because of her character. She was different than the "normal" girls. She was strong, smart, funny, a bit of weirdo and very attractive. I wanted to be like her. I was 10 and she was my first girl crush. I didn't know I was a lesbian, I realized that many years later.
AW I wish this was longer. What she said about our mental health issues being superpowers if we know how to harness them is EXACTLY what I've been saying for years!!
When I watched her in Cruel Intentions as a young kid, I always thought she's that evil. But watching her interviews, she's the opposite of her character. Kind and respectful. Love Sarah.
I mean, acting in a nutshell no ?! Nicole Kidman is my ultimate ACTING icon but she has apparently been an absolute Bitch down through the years,that's just how it goes. And yet played so many nice or very noble women. Then again ,people have called Keira knightly and also Anne Hathaway 'rude' and 'basic' and from what we hear now both are sincerely lovely actors.

Yes, we have loved her for all these roles, but I first became enamored by her in the teen soap Swan's Crossing circa 1991-1992. She was electrifying! Glad she's still slaying.
Didn't check out Swan's Crossing, but she was amazing on All My Children in another absolutely iconic role. Scooped herself up at least one Emmy for it too!

Thank you @attitudemag and Ola Awosika for this interview. I’ve seen Sarah Michelle Gellar give quite a few interviews in these clothes and probably on the very day you spoke to her. This is the only interview I’ve seen that shows a broader scope of her potential. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed watching the other interviews about Daphne’s wardrobe. But you gave her the opportunity to be her authentic self in stead of letting her sell a product or jump through the hoops of a formatted questionnaire. And that hits different.

THIS is what makes her a queer icon. That during an interview to promote her new show, she can get her interviewer to squeal from a compliment and ask THEM practical questions like how the nails work with buttons.

She is just so wonderful and coherent. I grew up watching Buffy and would run home in time to watch it. I really gravitated to the show a gay teen. There was just something comforting in it. Plus, it was so huge when we got to see Willow/Tara kiss as it was something we never really saw on TV then. It felt like a little victory for all the LGBT kids at the time. I also love her in Cruel Intentions, I just love the film as a whole as well.

And not only that but Buffy had to go on a Journey of what it means to be a slayer, and not all slayers were the same, and she had to take care of herself as a person first and fully accept who she was, slayer and all, before she could really stand in it, find her people, and change the game.
When I saw the trailer for wolf pack, I’ll admit I thought “wow, a movie for an Oz back story!” Lol he Seth Green should have totally been cast.

The queer metaphor in s2 was very heavy handed (which was def understandable and likely very groundbreaking for the time), so it's really cool to hear smg kinda be a little more subtle.

Im thinking of it more retroactively, but I just think the heavyhandedness comes from the fact that you can replace slayer with gay or trans and it's the same convo basically. Not in spirit but in word choice. The dialogue is just a bit on the nose for me. Not nearly a problem but just how it comes off imo.

And you can see the relief on her face when it was not what she thought it was. xD
It's strange but as a gay, I didn't care about the Willow and Tara relationship. I was hoping that Buffy and Faith will have a thing 😂 Especially the episode where they had their bodies switched 🙈😄 That messed up with my head 😅 Because both characters were strong, hot and we're kicking the asses of the bad guys.
