And, with Cate in the role, it good box office. That's what its about. I totally get Marin Alsop frustration with the film. And, BTW, Carol was not the first lesbian film. Read Highsmith's books its 1000% better than the film. Things are a bit better today, but try being a gay teen in small town USA and you might not feel the same way ...

Must say I was revolted by this movie. I am an orchestral musician living in Berlin. This is all just so wrong on many levels including the pat, and hollow put down of "cancel culture", the power hungry predator lesbian who is emotionally and mentally unstable, the abominable attempt to look like a conductor conducting, the nonsense about choosing a soloist to perform Elgar(it is never done remotely anything like that), the endless nonsense coming out of the conductors mouth, the ridiculous and unrealistic way the musicians are treated. I wish I hadn't seen this movie and the sold out theatre last night seemed to be very happy when it finally ended.

Is she really heteronormative? Her fashion style is quite androgynous, she always makes flirty jokes with her female colleagues and she doesn't mind playing lesbian roles. Also recently she made a donation for female, trans and nonbinary directors to finish their projects this year or something like that. She is not active in the community because, well, she's an old lady, but she has shown her support multiple times. More than enough to be a lesbian icon. There's other straight women who have done less for us but ppl in the community consider them gay icons anyway, so I don't see the problem with Cate

Interesting that the actress who said that because she's an actress she should be allowed to play a queer character and thus doesn't seem to understand the actual problem of equality for queers actors is a lesbian icon. Hmmm interesting.

Actually it is not about a lesbian predator, but about a person in a position of great power who abuses this. And originally the director wrote the script for a male role, but felt that the perspective needed to be broadened. I don't think that this film discredits lesbians, unlike the film 'notes on a scandal' where Judy Dench played the lesbian predator (and Blancher the victim!) - THAT definitely served the old chliche
