    This project was in my mind since I saw sooo many complaining about Barad-Dur (of the Third Age), stating how underwhelming is its representation in The Lord of the Rings Online, someone even saying that Isengard seemed taller. Verily, the size is not what's wrong with the Dark Tower(s).
    The Dor Amarth area in Gorgoroth bases all its charm and atmosphere around the menacing tower (or ruins of it) at its eastern end, tower that was supposed to watch over the player wherever he was in the barren landscape. Sadly, even if the area is actually designed so, the limitations built into the client make the Dark Tower spawn only when the player is so near to it (in relation to the Tower'size) that it is impossible to appreciate this almost unique area design, for LOTRO.

      I was on the player council and visited Turbine HQ back when Minis Tirith was being concepted/planned - and they were very aware that the measurements they were using were very different than what was described in the books. They felt the book described something underwhelming, and also something that would go against player expectations given how it was presented in the ROTK film adaptation.

    That was a fascinating video, thank you for taking the time to make that! With so much of the world having been created over the years, the game could even offer a tourist mode similar to the Discovery modes in the last couple of Assassin's Creed games. The extent to which the devs have now fleshed out their version of Middle Earth is really quite impressive.

  • @holthrain3985

    Great job, amazing video !
    On the technical side, I can't even imagine the work it must have been if you had to fix all the captured 3d scenes and if you had to correct all the textures. (I'm guessing you had to do it since capture tools usually require reapplying all textures and you said so in an anwser to another comment).
    Now for a lotro-related comment : I used to hate Minas Tirith. Lags, crashes, loading times all around... It was a place I avoided at all cost. Now with the 64 client, I went back to finish all the exploring deeds in town (all statues, inns, guest-houses...) and now I'm very sad it's not used more. The work put into crafting a believable, living city is amazing ! There are inns and taverns for all the tastes, I took a real joy to visit them all (with some surprises hidden !).
    Thank you for your hard work.
    If you wanted to do a 2nd video on this topic, I would suggest doing Annuminas, so we can see what it would look like if not flooded :)

    • @MiniExpBounder
      @MiniExpBounder  4 роки тому +5

      Thanks! The whole project ended having more than 5,5 Million vertex, so my PC was constantly on the verge of crash. Anyway nothing that wasn't worth fight against.
      Minas Tirith is one of my favourite places, and I think the way it is done makes it one of the most detailed, realistic and beautiful cities in the gaming history.
      I am thinking about a second round, but I'm still pondering what could make into the new list...guess we could have Annuminas along with the Endless Stair and maybe the Caradhras as special guest, who knows.
      About this video, I am still waiting for someone to point out a peculiar thing about the Cuthstan.

    How did you pull the data from the client to put this all together? I wonder....there are seemingly unreachable areas in the game that might using your process show routes into them? For example how to get into the unnamed ruins across from Galtrev in Pren Gwydh at 78.5S, 18.5W or, more interestingly when one is in Enedwaith at 74S, 20.3W looking West there's a pathway leading up into trees. But Elendil was like 2.5m isn't he? Though the video is cool

      He was, but for this video I measured the model that appears in the game. It was a bit of criticism against the developers, to put that very model in the ranking.

    Did you get Elendil's height from the actor? In the books he is said to be over 2,4m/8ft iirc. Bigger than the Mountain in GoT.

      I do not know if they would fit in an height comparison, but they may fit a showcase comprising Moria, Erebor, Gundabad, Thorin's Hall and the Iron Hills.

    I think some of these structures weren't in the movies?

    • @MiniExpBounder
      @MiniExpBounder  4 роки тому +1

      Since my size comparison is based around the appearances in the Lord of the Rings Online, in the rankings there are several structures that do not appear in the movies.
      In general, the movies cover just a fraction of the places and characters that appear in the book, while the MMO covers almost all of the book appearances with many other structures that are outside the canon but still very lore-accurate, like the fortresses in Mordor.

    i think you got the decimals wrong. 1km is 1000m. I don't think Barad-dur is 121878m tall. THATS ALMOST 75 MILES TALL lol

      You read wrong, it's 1218,78 m. So 1,2 km

    I think the measurements should be in FEET not in METRES. Cuz 42k metres? Its gonna go through the atmosphere. Either way, good video!
