    Great review. For those of us trying to decide what to keep, what to replace, a review comparing the Canon 100-500, 100-400 and the Sony 200-600 would be awesome.

      Yes, please compare with the 100-400II. The 500 or 600mm f4s are way out of my price range.

      The choice is clear If you still shoot with a Canon dslr...
      Canon 100-400mm 5.6 II would be a wise choice if you want a low cost highly durable lens which can be used on ef dslr and rf mirrorless mount plus extended reach with Tele extenders farther than the rf 100-500mm lens can reach. With the ef 100-400mm you can use both the 1.4 iii and 2x III Tele extenders simultaneously for extreme reach. With all zoom ranges.
      The 100-500mm rf lens is limited to 300 to 500mm range with a Tele extender. So if you're planning on using Tele extenders you might consider other lens options.
      The 100-400mm ef ii is a rock solid all metal durable lens while the 100-500mm rf is although a lighter weight lens. It has a plastic exterior less durable plastic filter threads, it does have some metal on the inside and the mount of is metal.
      The 100-400mm ef II lens has instant one touch manual focus mechanical override.
      The 100-400mm ef II and the 100-500mm rf lens both are very sharp. The rf has a electronic focus override that is difficult to use.
      The i.s. for both lenses are excellent.
      The 100-400mm ef ii has a little lower cost but you have to factor in the cost and slight extra weight of the ef/rf adaptor. You can save cost buying a used Canon ef 100-400mm i.s. ii they have been around for quite some time and are readily available.

    Nikon 200-500 with his f5.6 and the Sony 200-600 with the internal zoom and the short throw are incredible lenses. (Both with better prices also)
    The 500/f7.1 of the Canon and his price made me still doubt to go with the R5. (I have the D500 and the A9)

    Great video. With the EF 100-400 IS II, I always set mode 3 for IS and “full” for focusing distance. I agree f7.1 at 500 is not very desirable. I wish it was 5.6. I also wish Canon could make a RF 600 mm f4 very soon. I can’t wait to see your review on 100-500 with 1.4x and 2x extender. Keep up your good work. Great shot on the Owl.

      @@whistlingwingsphotography There's no reason to get the RF 600mm, the EF 600 MK2 is more than sharp enough for the R5, the EF 600 MK2 is actually sharper than the RF 28-70, the RF will also cost around £15K.

It is getting harder and harder to lug the EF 600 f/4 around everywhere I go. Given that the EF 600 f/4 III is so much lighter than the Mk. Ron, Another great video, can't wait for my 100-500 to come! Nice Photos in the link. Can't wait to see you try some TC and produce a video on that. I have EF TC's and can use them with the adapter, want to see if the can use the RF TC and attach the adapter for EF and use the 100-400, 500 & 600mm or if that fails. Can you put a 1.4 RF adapter, attach you 600mm with EF 1.4 TC attached. Lots of interesting things we could do if that works. I don't like that Canon didn't make the RF TC handle the whole range of the 100-500, can't zoom all the way back. Not sure why they couldn't have made the TC body a little longer and then the lens out of the TC would have cleared (guessing there is a distance to lens ratio they have to maintain). Just for all us folks who used the EF TC's the RF TC's seem limited from the start on the zoom.

    • @whistlingwingsphotography
      @whistlingwingsphotography  3 роки тому

      I am not sure about all the different ways you could order the adapter and various TCs. I tend to stick with 600, 840, and 1200mm via the adapter, 600mm f/4 and one of the two EF TCs. This is basically all I have ever needed with regards to focal length and the performance is excellent. The RF TCs on the 100-500 work well, but of course the slow apertures come into play. The restriction on the zoom has not been limiting for me up to this point, but I am sure it will rise up as an issue at some point, but hopefully not too often.

  • @lexptr
    @lexptr 3 роки тому

    Thank you for the great review, Ron!
    Regarding the long zooming ring travel. Did you try loosening the friction ring and zooming by pulling the barrel? Or it is still too stiff with this lens, even on loose setting? Pulling works well on my 100-400 mk II. I don't really like that method and use the zooming ring, but if the 100-500 has so much ring travel for full zoom - I see a good point to try the pull-push again.

    • @whistlingwingsphotography
      @whistlingwingsphotography  3 роки тому

      You can push pull it but it is not something that works well for me. I will do what I can with the ring. Thanks for the comment.

    Nice review of this lens. I'm waiting for my copy to arrive. You mentioned about the effort to fully zoom the lens which concerns me but isn't a deal breaker. Have you tried it with the 1.4x and the 2x? If yes, I understand that you can't zoom back to 100mm, is that a frustrating?

    • @whistlingwingsphotography
      @whistlingwingsphotography  3 роки тому +1

      I have used it with TCs. It really is not frustrating for me not to be able to fully zoom out as when I am sure TCs I am wanting max focal length so I don't do much zooming. My main wish is that it did not take so much travel of the zoom ring to zoom the full extent. That is bothersome at times.

    1. What type of lens camo cover are you using? I don't see lens coat have got a cover for this lens yet.
    2. You talk about using the ring for changing AF modes. What other AF modes are you using? On my R5 it seems it's always best to stay on the first one which detects the bird's eye. When do you choose to change AF mode and to what mode? Thanks!

    Thanks for another great discussion about the R5. I have the 100-400 II and use it primarily on my 7d. When I put it on the 5d the loss of the crop is very noticeable. This 100-500 would more or less cancel that difference. I have the 1.4x iii but think there is a noticeable drop in sharpness with lens. Now if I could only get my R5. I also wish it were a 200-600. I may rent the 600 or 800 f/11 at some point but can’t imagine I’ll be happy with them compared to the 100-400 or 100-500..

      Thanks so much for the comment. Yep, going from a cropped to a full-frame sensor can make a big difference depending on lenses and what type of photography you do most. I was surprised with how good the RF 800 f/11 performed on the R5 and the image quality is really good for the price point. Not sure I will ever get the 800, but it is intriguing with respect to video work for me.

    • @whistlingwingsphotography

      Given you have the 100-400 II, then I would wait. There are some advantages of the 100-500, with the better IS/IBIS being the most significant for me, over the 100-400. However, a 600 f/4 in the RF mount, especially if it is a DO lens, is worth waiting for.

But the 500mm limit and the 7.1 aperture there kind of turns me off to it. Plus, I think it is a bit overpriced for what it is. I may just try the 800mm f/11 for now to tide me over until I see what else Canon (and Tamron and Sigma) release for the RF mount. Thank you again for the great review!

I have found with biff that the focus begins to hunt but if I am able to lock on with spot af then enable the animal eye autofocus, and if that locks on it’s great. But if it doesn’t lock I am lost and the lens continues to try and focus - this on mechanical shutter. Any thoughts ?

      @whistlingwingsphotography  3 роки тому

      A couple of thoughts. First, do you have "Tracking Sensitivity" set to "Locked On" or to a more responsive setting? I like the "Locked On" setting, but if you miss your target you need to "pump" the AF-ON button, or whatever means you are using to initiate AF, until you get a lock on your subject. This way of doing things tends to minimize "AF Hunting" for me. If you have the Tracking Sensitivity set to Responsive the AF will always be looking to focus on something as long as you have the AF-ON button or other initiation method pressed. This setting tends to increase Hunting for me. Second, I always try to pre-focus at a distance where I expect my subject to be, because if I try to get AF lock on a subject that is way out of focus this tends to increase the AF systems miss rate and thus increase AF hunting. Lastly, I always try to initiate AF ( I use back button AF not Half press) when my subject or my subjects head or eye is as close to the center of the frame as possible. This seems to increase the AF lock on success. I use Zone and Animal Eye Detect w/Tracking as my two main AF methods and have the zone set to the middle of the frame 90% of the time. I hope this helps. If I think of anything else I will add to this comment.

    A very nice and great review of that lens, exactly what I was looking for prior to getting that lens. Now I have as you do many very older EF lens and have been using a first generation 1D x with ef 500mm, ef 300mm 2.8 is and many others like the ef 400mm IS D0 and I am really wondering if they will be working properly on a Canon R5 . What I would like to do is get the R5 and use my older Ef lens with it but get the RF 100-500mm is and eventually replace my Canon Prime oldy's for new Canon RF one as my budget make it possible...
    What really matters to me is Sharpness and image quality as one can see on my Flickr account. By the way am french from Quebec and ad no problem at all with your great explanation witch make me a instant subscriber and a easy like on that great UA-cam.

    • @whistlingwingsphotography

      For me the 100-500 is not a substitute for either the 500 f/4 or 600 f/4. However, it really depends on how often you shoot in low light, and thus need f/4 type speed, and how often you use TCs on your 500 f/4 to whether you would miss it or not. The 100-500 is slow on the long end at f/7.1 and putting a 1.4 TC on it makes it f/10. So, for me it really is no substitute for a fast f/4. I do love the lens for what it is; a great zoom for when you need 100-500mm of focal length.

      It's honestly not worth it if you are going to use this exclusively for astrophotography.
      You're going to be using manual focus at all times (auto focus doesn't work for astro), so spending all this money on image stabilization and autofocus is a waste. You're better off getting something like the EOS RA which is made for astrophotography, and then spending the rest on a nice telescope and mount.

    • @donbower
      @donbower 3 роки тому +1

      @@hectoreyesc so you already have the gear. That's great. For nebulas, the r5 is going to give you worse results than the the RA because it is not going to be sensitive to the H alpha wavelengths. You are better off going for a dedicated astronomy camera. For the same price as the R5, you could get something like a ZWO ASI 6200MM PRO which will give you absolutely stunning images.
      With your setup, the r5 is going to be massively oversampled, and you will lose the benefit of having such a high resolution sensor. I'd recommend doing some research on image scale and use an online calculator to see what sensor would be good for your setup.

    • @whistlingwingsphotography
      @whistlingwingsphotography  3 роки тому +1

      I have used the crop mode. However, there is one big drawback when you use the crop mode versus a teleconverter. In crop mode you lose a lot of resolution as your image size goes from 45mp down to 17mp as the camera "crops" the sensor and uses only a small central portion of the sensor. You can do the exact same thing by cropping during post processing basically cropping in post versus cropping in camera. When using a teleconverter you keep all 45mp of resolution and thus the extra magnification gained by the added optics results in more pixels on your subject. Depending on the situation, and if using the TC does not degrade the image quality too much, you should come out better with the actual increased detail on the subject by using a TC. Over the years I have found that 1.4x TC do not degrade IQ much at all and thus are a better option.
