  • This is a video of me completing the level "Beach Fight" without any lancemates.
In the Mech Warrior series you are given Allies called lancemates. You can give your lancemates whatever Mech you want them to have and they will fight along side you for missions. What makes these allies cool is that they use the same AI that the enemies use (A.K.A. They actually fight in the battle instead of just standing there giving exposition, like they would in most games). This leads to a fun challenge in these game to try and complete levels without lancemates for an extra challenge. In MechWarrior 4 Mercenaries however, this is much more noticeable for two reasons. First the AI is noticeably better in this game, they actually shoot you, target weak points, dodge terrain, circle around buildings, etc, etc... Nothing out of the ordinary for AI but actually functional in this game, as apposed to most Mech Warrior games. The second thing is that this game allows for 2 lances. This means 7 Lancemates. as such levels are designed around you entering the battlefield with a small army that can fight to a competent level. Going it alone can not just be hard, but might even be flat out impossible in some cases (If anyone knows how to beat "Country Life" without allies, let me know)
"New Exford - Beach Fight" is considered by many to be one of the bigger brawls in the game. You are supposed to bring 7 Lancemates to help you battle against 9 strong Heavy Mechs, and their aggressive leader who piolets an assult Mech. Under Normal circumstances, this would be one of those levels that's likely impossible without Lancemates.
HOWEVER, The enemy AI has a unique quirk in this level. The enemy leader is programmed to attack you and the rest of the army attacks your lancemates. if you don't have lancemates, the enemy's will wait patiently for you and the enemy leader to finish your duel. if you defeat the enemy leader, the duel will be considered over and the 9 enemy mechs will start attacking you. BUT, if you just disable the enemy commander without taking her out, the other enemy's will still believe the duel is going and remain stationary. you can then take out the main army without them firing back. In this video I demonstrate that trick.
I did this on 'Recruit' difficulty, but I'm pretty certain this works on 'Elite' as well.
