Honest and informative review. No backpacking boot is 100% perfect. Choices are dictated by the fit, the weight you carry, and conditions you encounter I have owned two pairs of the previous versions of the Quest 4D, as well as the Quest 3D, which are a bit lower on the ankle. They all performed extremely well and just wore down and out from a lot of use. I have been hiking the Sierra on extended backpacking trips for over 30 years. The Quest series boots have proven superior to everything else I have worn, in all conditions high altitude trekking presents. I will use these this year after the break in period. With all the snow, ice, swollen streams, rockfalls, washouts, tree fall, and all the other intensified conditions from our crazy snow and rains this year, these boots will be put to the test. What’s with the tiny, fixed loop at the top of the gusset? That wasn’t on my previous versions and doesn’t have an application with my Dirty Girl gaiters.

i just got a pair, and I assumed the loops are for hanging them up in your car or at your campside. you could attach them to your backpack via a carabiner, etc. surprisingly useful.

As with all Salomon boots, these are death traps in the wet, its ultimately why I sold them on, shame as they were comfy and looks great. These are a good summer boot.

That's a shame about Chinese ownership now. I have an older pair of Quests with a vibrim sole that is bomb proof. After a couple hundred miles, the toe cap separated, but a little shoe goo fixed that.

I have done in these around 400 miles. Very comfortable for my wide feet, never failed me with waterproofness (only once terrential rain got in pouring down my legs :-) but I find Salomon Contagrip sole quite slippery on dump rock.

I don’t use these as a dedicated hiking boot but I work in waterproofing and am often in mud pits and a few inches of gross water. I’ve had these as a daily boot for a year now and they are very comfortable and rugged. They clean up nicely and keep your feet dry.

Bought a pair of these in March of 21. Wore these almost every day. Overall they have held up well except for two points. I do a lot of crouching to work on equipment at mid to low heights. Mine developed creases above the ball of my feet that eventually caused the adhesive to fail at the creases on the rear parts of the toe caps on each side that angle downward to the insole. I may try to reglue those small sections E6000 flexible glue. Other than that, keeping the laces tied is my only gripe.

I agree. Just returned my pair to REI because of the toe cap issue. Might buy another pair though. They seem tough to beat and fit me great. I was also thinking about just shoe gooing them.

I have walked with these boots for 10 months a lot in nature but also on asphalt, ive lost about 95% of the bottom texture. Almost all shoes i have will eventually have holes in them. These are the best ones yet, but still little disappointed that in another 10 moths these are probably worn out... i do walk a lot

It's quiet here, let's change that! Great review man! I just got back from aspen, hiking in the boots ive had for years, some cheap no name non waterproof boots. But I plan on hiking a lot more in more adverse terrain where water will be an issue , I love rocky and hard hikes to get to those beautiful locations to take photos of, and im bouncing between these and the la sportiva ultra raptor ii. Guess im going into rei tomorrow.

Using these boots 2-3 times per week. Average 10-15 miles hiking each day. After 8 months use they are coming apart. The right boot has cracked on the width of the bottom. Considerable separation on the seams of BOTH toe caps. Paid approximately $250. Do not recommend this boot for any extensive thru hikes. Yes, they are very comfortable. The excellent spacing prevents blisters. Love the design of this boot. Very disappointed with the poor quality materials. The separation near the toe caps I can deal with. The large crack on the bottom is a deal breaker. Happy trails! 🏕🌞🤠

Guys.. i do aggressive hiking while out scouting and looking for shed antlers. Sometimes with a 15 to 20 pound pack. I took these boots out for one day, and the tread lugs have started breaking and ripping apart. They used too stiff of an outsole (contagrip) that cannot hold up to sharp rocks and terrain. Going back to my proven merrels that are now on two years and well over 200 miles of hard hiking and still going strong. Side note. If only saloman put vibram soles on this boot, it would be hands down the best.

The older version of this boot was able to give me 1260 miles in 2020. The newer version has only last 134 to 150 miles before delaminating in the toe area. Thought is was a fluke and returned for another pair. Same thing. Really unfortunate because I have used nothing but this boot for several years!

I used these boots for hiking the K2 in the Karakoram range and the Salomons are basically worthless. The Contragrip sole tears down so easily it becomes useless after a few days of hiking. Even to the point when it becomes dangerous when I was crossing glaciers. In all other aspects they are really great shoes: very comfortable, weatherproof and great ankle support. But durability is a big failure.

I've used these backpacking in some pretty rough terrain (wet, tree roots, rough rock) as well as some flat ground for 200-250kms. I found them very comfortable and versatile however, I will be looking at an alternative boot as the sole has started crack and the toe protection has started to delaminate.
