At this point in my life the trombonist I most enjoy hearing now is John Allred. Sorry JJ, Urbie, Fontanna, Rosolino, James Morrison, etc, etc, but the choices John Allred makes when he plays, combined with such a beautiful sound is absolutely compelling and memorising. After 56 years of playing the trombone myself, if I was asked today, John Allred would be my desert island trombonist choice.
I remember watching John Allred play as a guest artist many years at the old Sacramento Jazz Jubilee with some of the greats like Howard Alden, Allan Vache etc...sadly all those trad and swing festivals are mostly gone in the U.S. now.
Two really fine festivals are going strong in the US -- this October's Redwood Coast Music Festival in Eureka, California, and next March's Jazz Bash by the Bay in Monterey, also California. We can mourn the losses but have to celebrate the good things still afloat!
